  1. A few photos from the talk with the swordsmith Peter Johnsson. After the talk we got to look at a few swords he had brought with him. The bronze sword was really nice.

He does swordsmithing courses every spring and fall. I’m tempted to sign up, but it’s pretty long, and requires bringing your own blade material. Or spend two more days ahead of the course to make it.

  2. Made a video of my pseudorandom #geohash #unicycle adventure from yesterday: youtube.com/watch?v=nrlpUz9nL_

Also wrote it up on the geohash wiki: geohashing.site/geohashing/202

Sadly I was only able to get within 5m of the hash point, so had to settle for the "No Trespassing" consolation prize achievement.

  3. So we're gradually rewriting it in #no_std #rust. We can make direct syscalls, which are allowed by our seccomp filter so as to avoid recursion, and that's about it.

Luckily most of what this library does is set up fast IPC to our main process and delegate most of the syscall handling to there, so there's not that much we need to implement in this constrained environment. It's certainly making for some interesting exercises, though.

  6. Wrote an implementation of thread local storage in #no_std #rust, for Linux x86_64, with options to a) use libc's thread local storage, b) leverage libc's thread local storage that something in the same process has set up, or c) work without native thread local storage at all.

Toying with the idea of publishing it as a crate but, uh, I guess these requirements are pretty niche.

  16. On Saturday, @BlackCatBonifide was using our car, so I took my #eskateboard out to run an errand. Somehow we *both* managed to pick up screws in our wheels.

At least it was a much briefer hassle on the longboard tire - I just wrapped my coat fabric around it for grip and unscrewed it back out.

  17. Finally had a chance to try out a #OneWheel for a few minutes this weekend. It was a lot of fun!

I've been eyeing either a #OneWheel or electric unicycle (#EUC) to ~replace my #eskateboard. EUCs look better on paper, but they don't seem to have caught on as much for some reason... Maybe just marketing?

I generally prefer self-powered #mobility, but sometimes I want to get somewhere quicker and without sweating... and yeah, the e-devices are fun :)

  22. achievement unlocked: I'm getting in long enough stretches of backwards on the #unicycle that I'm starting to loosen the pedals.

I guess I'd better start turning the seat around backwards for extended backwards-riding practice sessions
