#unicycle day 16: I put air in the tire and HOLY CRAP it's a totally different animal now. Its so responsive and easy to make corrections, but requires about 3x the tension in my body to react.

Anyways: today's goal was a figure eight, and the tight turn at the end was a bonus!

#unicycle day 15. I'm getting pretty good at going in a straight line, today's practice was curving. Witnessed here (offscreen 😅) is my first successful U-turn!

I've updated my #unicycle practice to twice a week to continue building muscles. Had an improvement today, I turned a corner without touching a wall!

Unfortunately, my old 26" Nimbus muni is finally starting to show its age.

The hydraulic rim brakes are getting tired (and seem to confuse every local bike shop), 26×3" tires are getting harder to find, and I just snapped a spoke. Everything is repairable, but it felt like the right time to retire it to winter/backup duty and treat myself to an upgrade.

The unfortunate part? There really aren't many good options for Canadians anymore. Kris Holm still makes incredible unicycles (I absolutely love my KH36), but there isn't a Canadian dealer anymore, and U.S. shops generally won't ship them across the border.

(insert plea for someone to starting selling good unicycles in Canada again!)

So... if I'm already paying to ship a unicycle across an ocean, why not go all in and order a customized one from Italy!?

I ended up ordering a custom-anodized 27.5" from Mad4One (https://www.mad4one.com), and it finally arrived.

The fit and finish are fantastic, and having hydraulic disc brakes on a muni is a huge step up from the old rim brakes. It may just be the honeymoon phase talking, but the 27.5" also seems to roll over roots and rough sections a little more effortlessly than my old 26".

I've had it out a few times on the local trails and it's awesome. Looking forward to actually making out it to the mountains soon!

#unicycle day 11. I can mount 19 times out of 20, and go in a straight line basically until I run out of road.

First attempts at intentional turning have been a moderate success, as shown by the three quarters of a U-turn here.

I got some questions in a DM from a potential future unicyclist. I will not out them in case they want to keep a low profile. 😉

I am telling you all this because I love these questions and if anyone else wants help and advice, to discuss learning, or they want to borrow a uncycle, I am happy to facilitate this as best I can (I do know unicyclists in bunch of regions).

My hands are so free that I can even take a picture of myself holding my snack. 😜

And yes many bicyclists can cycle hands free but can they slow down and turn tight corners remaining so? I think that a #unicycle still has the upper… hand. 🤣

It was nice weather today, so I went for a little cruise around Oslo on my smallest #unicycle (24″).

#unicycle Update,. Don't worry, I haven't given up. I'm still practicing weekly and should move to twice a week but I don't want to put out the same update every week. I'll let you know if I have a breakthrough (probably once my muscles catch up.)

Today as I cycled home I happened to passed @erlendloe but for a second I did not recognise him. Why?

A #unicycle tip that most unicyclists already know but is always worth a reminder. If your laces look like Picture 1, tuck them in like Picture 2. This will prevent them getting caught on your crank ends (Picture 3) and tying your feet to the unicycle.

This can happen on a regular bike but it is worse on a uni because they are generally "fixies" and balance is more … umm… "delicate". And we often have multi-holed cranks.

Get it right and you can cycle at speed as per Picture 4.

Worked on rolling mounts a bit today, in preparation for level testing at the #unicycle Midwest mini meet next month.

Getting smoother, but for testing I need to ensure the wheel doesn't stop, and definitely doesn't roll back.
