  4. @iandunt.bsky.social Why should there be any cap at all on Electoral Commission fines? No matter how much they are, offshore black money has enough to make them just part of the acceptable cost of buying governments.

Conspicuous by its absence is any mention of electoral reform.
The biggest reason for lack of trust in our democracy is the massive numbers of votes which are pointless, in the modern equivalent of rotten boroughs. A new approach to voting is essential. What’s good enough for mayoral elections should be good enough for Westminster elections too.

I may suck at math, but $150b is just 6% of the $2 TRILLION in savings #TheElongatedMuskrat told #Republicans he could find in "waste, fraud & abuse" to cut from the budget. 🤔

👍 Adolescence is excellent. A great overview of the context and effects of adolescent pressures in the 21st century

It is good that it is spurring the desire for action to reduce the harms by online products/services. School phone bans should be one action (IMO)

I thought the show did a brilliant job illustrating that the danger is social media bubbles and bad actors. For me, the key line was "we thought he was in his room, safe"

  9. @iandunt.bsky.social That's similar to what I pay to Virgin Media.

Where I live, there is really no alternative if I want fast broadband. The Openreach speeds round here are very slow.

And don't Virgin Media know it!

For decades this was the conventional wisdom, (the concept of #meritgoods in mainstream economics), but the neoliberals, (backed by vested interests) have sought to subvert it via austerity and propaganda.

An interesting book on this subject is 'The Body Economic' by D. Stuckler and S. Basu. It makes numerous interesting points, such as that health care spending tends to have a high multiplier effect, (i.e. it stimulates the economy more for a given sum than defence spending for example).

However, the long-term solution is tackling the debt-finance system itself - a matter I addressed in the following paper:

Financial Credit As A Merit Good.

" ...the liberty of a democracy is not safe if the people tolerated the growth of private power to a point where it becomes stronger than the democratic state itself. That in its essence is fascism: ownership of government by an individual, by a group, or any controlling private power." - FDR, 1938

I'm printing this out. Great explainer. Very clear.

  15. @IanDSmith Totally agree. I detest these, "get to know your co-workers," courses.
