Addendum. This is so annoying: A person commented on a post I have written about this issue on Tumblr, then asked me "just out of curiosity" what feedback I would wish to get from a beta reader. I answered (in general terms) and then they offered to beta read for me. What part of "I don't need a beta reader" didn't they understand?
These paid beta readers seem to be desperate to get customers, so they'll try anything, I guess.

The morality of my characters often strays from my own. They make choices I’d never make, just to see where those paths lead.

My characters often carry morals sharper or blurrier than mine, take risks I wouldn’t, so I can explore truths I might never touch in real life.

2025-06-23 - Conversely, what’s the worst piece of writing advice you’ve ever encountered?

Anything that falls under a style:

- never use adverbs
- said-bookisms
- never use first-person narrative

That said, if you need three adverbs strung in a row to describe your actions then your style is shit (looking at you, JK).
