Today I gave 2 lectures to 2 University of Warsaw classes back to back. Students were Polish and international, some I knew from France and Sweden.

One speech was "Town Hall or Town Meeting: Contrasting Campaign Rhetoric with a Symbol of Deliberative Democracy." I explained the differences between the contrived CNN spectacle & the direct democracy legislatue in most Massachusetts municipalities.

We contribute to understandings of international rhetoric, studying leaders of the countries and exchanges where leaders meet—in state visits or as candidates debating. We make the case for treating the leaders of the region with their own agency, rather than as agents of others.

As postcolonial agents, leaders in the region have taken contrasting positions, avoiding the influence of post-Soviet politics, and the pull toward westernization. Chapters offer insight into the connections and influence of presidential rhetoric in Central and Eastern Europe to contextualize and better understand how the rhetoric has either helped or hindered development of democratic principles in the region many decades past the period of the “transition.”

US presidents visited Poland 16 times, Ukraine, 5 times. In total, 61 visits to CEE countries.

There's remarkably little scholarship from US scholars.

The book explains why, in part, this is, & offers new scholarship from people who are from, have lived & worked in #Poland, #Romania, #Bulgaria, #Belarus, #Hungary, #Lithuania, #Slovakia, #TheNetherlands & the #US. #teamRhetoric #Commodon

There are few US scholars who have examined US Presidents in Central and Eastern Europe.
