The Geometry of Breaking or Healing

Those are the two options.

To be part of the destruction of that which is precious,
even the life of the enemy.
Or a conduit for the substance that binds up wounds and the broken-hearted.

Even when flaws cause me to hurt those around me or engage in broken thoughts and so, for a time, join with the razing power,
if I am repentant, make the necessary changes, and return to the healing stream,
then the danger of losing my humanity is minimized.

And, if at the end of my life when I am weighed in the balance, and my contribution to fixing outweighs the breaking, then I will be satisfied to rest easy in the knowledge that in some small way I was an addition to the healing sum.

La paix du christianisme

Chez les chrétiens, la paix, eirēnē en grec, héritière du shalom hébraïque, porte cette même idée de plénitude, mais elle est redéfinie autour d’un événement central, soit l’incarnation, la croix et la personne du Christ comme Prince de la Paix.

Le trait le plus distinctif de la paix chrétienne est qu’elle n’est pas d’abord une réalisation ou une conquête spirituelle, mais un don gratuit reçu du Christ : « Je vous laisse la paix, je vous donne ma paix ; je ne vous la donne pas comme le monde la donne ». Cette précision « pas comme le monde la donne » est capitale : elle distingue une paix qui ne dépend pas des circonstances extérieures issues de l’absence de conflit, la sécurité et le confort, mais d’une paix qui subsiste même au cœur de la tribulation.

Pour Paul, la paix chrétienne a une structure double, elle est verticale par la réconciliation de l’humanité avec Dieu, rendue possible par la croix, qui répare la rupture introduite par le péché. Elle est horizontale par la réconciliation entre les humains eux-mêmes.

La paix n’est donc jamais purement intérieure, elle est intrinsèquement relationnelle et communautaire, comme dans le judaïsme, mais elle passe ici par la médiation d’une personne plutôt que par l’étude et la justice seules.

Ainsi, la paix figure parmi les fruits de l’Esprit, aux côtés de l’amour, de la joie, de la patience. Cette catégorisation est significative. Un fruit ne se fabrique pas par la seule volonté, il mûrit d’une vie déjà greffée à une source plus grande. La paix chrétienne suppose donc une transformation intérieure progressive plutôt qu’une technique ou une discipline maîtrisable. On devient faiseur de paix, dont une paix agissante, comparable au radaf shalom juif ou la générosité et noblesse de cœur soufie.

Chez les Pères du désert et les mystiques chrétiens, la paix se rapproche de la libération des passions désordonnées qui permet au cœur de se rendre disponible à la prière incessante. On y trouve une parenté frappante avec le nirvāṇa bouddhiste ou l’ataraxia stoïcienne, bien que la finalité reste ici l’union avec un Dieu personnel plutôt que l’extinction du désir en soi.

Dans le sillage plus contemporain, par exemple Simone Weil, la paix chrétienne se comprend aussi comme attention, un consentement au réel, une disponibilité totale qui suspend le vouloir-saisir de l’ego. Cette paix rejoint, par un autre chemin, l’approche soufi, par un abandon actif plutôt qu’une résignation.

Enfin, comme dans le judaïsme, le christianisme porte un horizon de paix cosmique et définitive avec le Royaume de Dieu. Mais la théologie chrétienne insiste sur une tension propre : cette paix est déjà et pas encore, inaugurée par le Christ, mais non encore pleinement accomplie, ce qui donne à l’existence chrétienne une qualité d’attente active, ni pur retrait contemplatif ni simple militantisme historique.

En somme, la paix chrétienne se situe à un carrefour singulier parmi les traditions que nous avons parcourues. Comme le judaïsme, elle refuse de séparer paix et justice, et l’inscrit dans l’histoire. Comme le soufisme, elle passe par l’abandon amoureux et la médiation d’un Dieu personnel. Comme le bouddhisme, elle implique une libération des passions et de l’agitation intérieure. Toutefois, c’est une personne, non un principe ou un vide, qui est la paix, et qui la donne plutôt qu’elle ne se conquiert.

Dans un monde où tout le monde parle de paix, est-ce que nous avons la même conception de celle-ci? Est-ce que les écarts expliqueraient en partie les conflits qui perdurent?
