I meant to share this at the start of the new year, and then the days got away from me.

Which turns out to be fitting, because the word I chose is not one that expires.

My word for this year is shalom. Peace and here is what most people do not know about it. Shalom does not only mean peace the way English means it, the absence of fighting. The root carries the idea of wholeness. Something complete, with nothing missing. That is why we use the same word to greet someone and to say goodbye. We are not just wishing quiet on them. We are wishing them whole.

I do not need to tell you why I chose it this year.

But I want to say clearly that I did not choose it as a wish for something far away and political. I chose it for the smaller version too. Peace in a home. Peace in a body that has been through things. Peace between two people who stopped speaking. The kind you can actually build.

So a few days late, and no less sincere: shalom. May this year bring you the whole version.

"[T]he 56th annual #NYC #PrideMarch Sunday, which was themed “For All of Us.

But for many #Jewish participants, the festivities unfolded against a backdrop of growing unease.

“It’s been a lot harder to be Jewish in #queer spaces, and often hard to also be queer in Jewish spaces as well,” Schafer said. “And so I think that we’ve seen record numbers of people here needing to find community.”

Last year, #Ottawa’s #Pride Parade was cancelled after pro-#Palestinian #protesters blocked the route, and in 2024, Jewish #Lesbians in #NewYork began hosting their own Pride celebration, #Shalom, #Dykes, after organizers of the #DykeMarch hosted their parade under the theme “Dykes Against #Genocide.”

On Saturday, #California Jewish State Sen. #ScottWiener said in a post on X that he had been harassed “verbally and physically” while attending a #trans march in #SanFrancisco earlier in the week."

I'm proud to announce the start of a new project, Shalom V'Tzedek a #Yeshiva (or school of #Jewish learning) that will focus on promoting Unbound #HumanisticJudaism, with a special focus on #Shalom (#peace) and #Tzedek (#Justice).

We have lots of work in progress, but for this summer we will be focusing on two things:

1. A monthly #AntiFascist book discussion group

2. A monthly book discussion group that will be looking for the Torah (teachings or wisdom) in the Tales of the City series of books by #ArmisteadMaupin

I grew up mostly in the #Episcopalian Church, very #HighChurch, & simultaneously a group called #Shalom, a #nondenominational community that grew directly from #CharismaticCatholic or #CatholicEvangelical movement. Yes, that was a thing. #Catholics, nuns even, playing guitars & speaking in #tongues (which I'd learn much later on can be called #glossolalia; yes, I definitely did do that). So I can't *precisely* call myself an #Exvangelical, but I'm definitely in the same biosphere, so to speak.
