    *** Love Your Enemy ***
    (2024 - Viki 12 1:10 eps)

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

A trope-filled romcom about rivals since birth. They meet again at their old school as teacher & admin. The old relationship battles begin again.

Both MLs were great, but FLs fell flat. The saving grace in this drama is the backstory. Both of the young leads are fabulous & their chemistry can be felt!

It had a lot of potential, but every storyline seemed to miss the mark & it feels like they pulled problems out of a hat to fill space. Fun cameos & FL's grandpa is a great character, with a couple of his own storylines but neither end up being what they should have been. The love triangle is handled well & there are some funny moments if you aren't looking for reality.

It did make me interested in Ju Ji Hoon's other work & I will be on the lookout for those young actors.

    My Lovely Liar
    (2023 - Viki, 16 1:05 eps)

Romance between 2 evenly matched people is nice to see. The leads were extremely cute together. Seeing a healthy relationship despite trauma is refreshing. However, there are some very unhealthy relationships in the show & suicide, so it's not all fluffy.

Many male actors playing cold characters get a bad rap. Good ones can play cold with subtlety to convey underlying feelings without losing that mask. Hwang Min Hyun really did this well. Kim So Hyun was also very good in her role.

Watching this with a watch party group was so fun as we shared & analyzed our many, many theories on who did what & how things would end up. Every episode had a lot of clues. The show kept us guessing! The side stories were varied. The wardrobe choices were fun! It will be a future rewatch!

    Family by Choice
    (2024 - Viki 16 1:10 eps)

A little girl's widower dad takes in a young boy & along with the divorced dad & his son who live upstairs, they create a found family. The kids have a close relationship but when the boys hit adulthood, the boys spend time apart from their dads & sister with their "other" families. After 10 years, the family reunites.

The 1st 11 eps about their found family are wonderfully done. But the last eps try to wrap up 10 missing years & the pacing feels off. The story is still good, the acting was great, but the writer got sloppy. Nothing was really left hanging, but neither was it fully fleshed out. Fixing broken relationships takes more than we were given.

Choi Won Young as the girl's dad was excellent. Bae Hyeon Seong played a complex character really well. It was nice for once not to see a family pressuring kids about studying.

    True Beauty (2020 Viki 16 1:15 eps)

Really liked this one! I was looking for something lighter. Although there's the necessary Kdrama trauma, it has a lot of tropes & the 2nd couple is really funny. I loved the play against stereotypes there. This is the 1st time seeing the 3 main leads and I adored them all. I couldn't decide which side of the love triangle I was rooting for. Lovely high school/college romance, wonderful supporting characters - I don't know when I've hated a mom as much.

Like "The Beauty Inside" it explores loving people no matter their appearance and being true to yourself.

  6. Just finished "Heavenly Idol", which I watched because I liked Kim Min-gyu in “Business Proposal”. I thought he was good in this show too.

I felt the show itself dragged at times and was a little confusing. It’s hard to introduce a whole extra world with its own religion in just 12 episodes. I kind of felt like I was missing something at first. Toward the end it got good enough to make me want to find out what was going to happen next.

For the events that happen, I thought the relationships should have been much stronger and deeper. I felt that the leads didn’t really have a lot of chemistry and it felt more like a brotherly love than a romantic one.

It was sweet and funny at times, and Kim Min-gyu played a great bumbling idol.

Probably won’t make it to my rewatch list, but still glad I saw it.

    Cinderella at 2 AM
    (2024 - 10 1:05 eps)

A rich chaebol son with a poor office worker who is older & has had responsibility for her brother since leaving her parents behind as a high schooler. This has made her pragmatic. When she finds out her young boyfriend is the 2nd son of the company owner, she knows the relationship is unrealistic. When mom offers money to break up, she takes it.

Good acting, good OST, nothing extraordinary in set design, cinematography, or costuming. There were a few gems of wisdom in the writing, most was lackluster & predictable. The brothers were great together & the 2nd couple was very cute - they stole the show. Good fluff, with some occasional unexpected depth, but then a little disappointment because those hints of something more never came to fruition.

    What Happens To My Family?
(2014 Viki 53 1:05 NOTE: currently availabe in the U.S. region on Viki)

I binged this show - 53 episodes in 2 weeks. It was amazing. All the actors were phenomenal. Such a beautiful story. It made me laugh and sob (a lot). I was infuriated and astonished at some characters some of the time and so happy and grateful for them at other times. If you want to be a mess of emotion, this is perfect! It only dragged momentarily in a couple of episodes. The side storylines are so well done and the 3 main story lines are so engaging that 53 episodes seemed fast. Do note that it was almost 10 years ago and so there are some silly sound effects and a some goofy humor, but IMHO they just add to the kDrama-ness of it!

    What Happens To My Family?

    [2/2 continuation]

The 1st 5 eps seemed really sitcom like to me and I wasn't sure, but the drama came barreling in around episode 6. It is meant to be funny most of the time - great, silly sound effects and over-the-top reactions to things, but I have been in tears a few times already.

53 eps may seem like too many, but I have faith. It's like 3 dramas in one with each child in the family having a main story line and the side stories are good too. Love triangles, maybe enemies to lovers, arranged marriages, an aunt who can't keep her mouth shut, meddling mothers & cousin, 3 chaebols - it's full of the best of kDrama.

I thought I'd give this update 17 eps in because who knows if it will still be available in the U.S. by the time I finish all 53 eps. There isn't another long holiday weekend for a while.

If I wasn't on a PHS Quest (watch everything with Park Hyung Sik) I don't know that I would have considered watching a 53 1hr eps drama. I have been so pleasantly surprised! I ended up binging over the holiday weekend and am on episode 17 now.

I am watching for PHS, but I was pleased to see other familiar actors. Yoon Park shows up as a guy you love to hate, reminiscent of "Forcasting Love & Weather." I saw Nam Ji Hyun in "Suspicious Partner," but I like her character here better. After seeing Seo Kang Joon in "When the Weather is Nice," I was going to look for more shows with him and here he is! There are several other familiar faces too!

Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
    (2020 - Netflix, 16 1:03 eps)

Phenomenal acting, especially Lee Jae Wook & Kim Joo Heon. Go Ah Ra's performance makes her character, who could have come off self-centered & demanding, a loveable woman with a zest for life.

An escapist romcom - a story of falling in love. Until eps 14, it has entertaining side couples, reasonable trauma, evil mother, stalker, cute dog, enticing food scenes, beautiful piano music, & a theme of learning to enjoy life's simple things.

The writer abandoned the satisfying narrative that had been developing & threw in some horrible plot twists with no reasonable explanation & which completely ruined the ML's integrity. But the characters were portrayed so well that I ended up crying for nearly all the last 2 eps. I will miss them, but I cannot forgive what the writer did to that story.

    The Atypical Family - REWATCH
    (2024 - Netflix 12 1:10 eps)

Even better the 2nd time around!

A dysfunctional family of superheroes who have lost their powers due to modern mental health problems meets a woman who surprises them all & things begin to change.

I was able to pick up on the small clues this time around & a big theme hit me differently. A family that can see the past & the future can't begin to see what's right in front of them in the present. Another idea I liked was that "an ending is a beginning."

Stellar acting, wonderful chemistry, great story, & meaningful cinematography definitely made the rewatch worth it!

    The Atypical Family
    (2024 - Netflix, 12 1:10 eps)

An original, well-written, well-acted, compelling story with meaning makes this one of the best of 2024 (& that's a high bar). A family of superheroes has fallen due to modern afflictions. A woman appears in their lives & despite an awful start, becomes a ray of hope.

The father-daughter relationship is so moving. Park So Yi at 12 was amazing. The side stories all fold beautifully into the themes of greed-destroys-all & your-perception-can-change-fate that run through the drama. The use of cinematography as a story-telling element was on-point & gorgeous. Chemistry was stellar in all relationships.

I want to go on & on, but I don't think I can say more without spoilers. Excellent drama!

    *** Monthly Magazine Home ***

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

A sr. editor at a monthly housing magazine runs into trouble when the new CEO turns out to be her new landlord. The potential of a story about what it means to have & make a home is unfortunately squandered. The storyline meanders & never finds a good, solid direction.

The cast is marvelous (great guest roles too) & carries the show - a cliched, tropeful story with a self-made, rich, cold boss & a poor, struggling jr. involved in a love triangle, & the worst noble idiocy & time-break/leap I've seen so far.

If you like architecture & seeing a variety of homes (some from other dramas), & appreciate the actors, it's a fun, often silly, kind of sweet watch through eps 15. Just stop there, & it'll be good. The writer went off the rails in the last episode & there's just no redemption possible.

    *** I Order You (2015) ***
    (Viki 16 0:20 eps)

    [!!CW!! Synopsis & non-spoilery review.]

An unemployed woman picks up food for her brother from a gourmet lunch box place, meeting 3 workers & falls instantly in love with the cold-hearted jerk (with multiple traumas that aren't even hinted at until later).

The first several episodes are tropey, stupid, & cutesy, although the FL cannot really pull cute off & is annoying, while the ML is stiff. Then we get to the episodes where the writer decided maybe it should be a melodrama with trauma. At this point, the FL's acting significantly improves, but the addition of the all-too-serious music had me laughing instead of sobbing. It was so ridiculous.

The side characters could have been interesting, but they were only pulled out for a few seconds here & there to advance the storyline slightly.

Only recommend if you're on a quest or you want to hate-watch something.

    Cheese in the Trap
    (2016 - Viki, 16 1:05 eps)

It was such an unusual journey. Maybe the 7.4 MDL rating is because it's not a comfortable show & the big messages aren't realized until the last eps. Many consider it a classic, probably because of the quality acting, & the unusual twist on a trope.

Not your typical rich chaebol with trauma falling for the poor girl: it is a rollercoaster of emotion. There are sweet friends, imperfect parents, a crazy sibling, a love triangle, & many side characters with difficult personality traits.

Both MLs get angry & act out, but in very different ways. One is much more socially acceptable, the other makes people very uncomfortable. The FL demonstrates that being with a person means accepting the good & the bad in yourself & them.

Now that I know the ending, my perception of the whole thing shifted.

    Are You Human Too?
    (2018 - Viki, 36 0:35 eps)

Sci-fi with Seo Kang Joon! I was hoping for a lot & wasn't disappointed. SKJ plays both an heir & his duplicate robot/AI & he did an amazing job - you could tell which one he was by the tone of his voice & the shape of his smile. All the main roles were really well acted. The OST was very good & cinematography was beautiful.

The story makes you think about what success means. It questions greed, power, control, responsibility, sacrifice, family, how we define love, & what it means to be human. Each character suffers from some kind of greed at some point & how they handle the greed leads to their growth or downfall. The ending with the answer to the human question was a different view & made it all the more interesting.

Overall, a great story with action, suspense, twists, & romance.

When the Weather Is Fine (2020 Netflix 16 1:00 eps)

SLOW but so GOOD! 1st, know that in my eyes, Park Min-young can do no wrong. I started it thinking it might be a cute love story, but it was very different. I hadn't seen Seo Kang Joon in anything yet, but now I will look for him. He was perfect for this character. The drama is **very** slow-paced, but the pacing fits the story perfectly. There isn't even a lot of dialog, but at times what is said hits you like a thunderbolt.

There is a lot of trauma to be processed, but both the lead actors are fabulous at bringing us along on their journeys. Lots of crying for me. If you can stick out the slow pace, it's very therapeutic. The little sister & her shenanigans bring some comedic relief when needed, but it is a heavy drama.

If you watch, be sure to read the blog post at the end of each episode, these are crucial to the story.

Incheon Airport's passenger service team has an enthusiastic, new employee & a stand-offish colleague who have to learn to get along. Great cast with Chae Soo Bin (When the Phone Rings) & Lee Je Hoon (Art of Negotiation) bringing great emotion to a plot that requires suspending disbelief (do they not know how magnets work?).

Something nefarious is happening with an executive, who happens to have a past with the ML. Unfortunately, the mystery, & back story lack details. But the relationships keep it interesting, with a couple of slow romances, & some people on the team learning their value. Seeing behind the scenes of the airport is fun. 3 yrs later, back at the hospital with a new trauma center opening. Following the interesting pattern of a hospital-wide political problem throughout the series & medical situations in each eps with great acting. Some sides get a bit more space - Nurse Park's relationship & Dr. Jang learning a few things.

Minor complaints: parents of adults meddling, "hiding" in the middle of an emergency while others risk their lives looking for the person - completely out of character, voice-overs at the end enlightening us to all the valuable lessons was a bit much.

Good character growth & we see some good communication. Overall, it is an excellent medical drama with a bit of romance, & a lot of friendships & family relationships maturing - all while throwing interesting medical & ethical issues at us.

    Celebrity
    (2023 Netflix, 12 45min eps)

Because the story, about social media influencers, deals with wealthy people, the costuming is gorgeous, as are the places & products they use. Netflix cinematography rises to the occasion.

It involved many characters with a lot of problems. Not enough time to develop that many characters. The 2nd FL, Lee Chung Ah, with great acting, was the only one with growth. The other actors were also good, but the story didn't give them an opportunity for growth. The main character's background didn't seem to match her current character.

Looking at the world of social influencers was interesting & disturbing. If you want to dwell on it, it brings up a lot of ethical problems. The corruption of the police by the wealthy was present here, along with a few other tropes. It did have some surprises & twists, which I enjoyed.

Finished my 1st complete re-watch via a great watch party group.
This is a beautiful drama. The costumes, sets and visual story-telling in every scene are breathtaking. The story itself is an insightful commentary on mental health, relationships, and family, all while delivering a chilling mystery yet still having light-hearted and funny moments. I love the use of fairy-tales to allow us to understand the characters better.

On my 1st watch it became one of my favorites. It does contain many kdrama tropes and uses them to take some shortcuts; I can forgive this because healing mental trauma in 16 episodes is impossible IRL. The K2 (2016)

Ji Chang-wook makes an excellent spy/agent. K2 was obviously written to show off this talent. The story is sloppy and patched together with political intrigue that comes out of nowhere and people switching sides faster than you can keep track.

That said, I really enjoyed it and may even rewatch, but would only recommend it to people who like Ji Chang-wook beating up dozens of other agents & police every episode. The battle choreography is beyond belief (seriously - only a real superhero could do that). I'm not sure if it was meant to be satirical, but if you just take it at face-value as an action series, it's a fun watch.

The 2 female leads, Im Yoon-ah & Song Yoon-ah were also excellent with the characters they were given. I even ended up feeling sorry for the villain.

An enemies-to-lovers story about an actor & his management/PR staff. It's a cute & sweet romcom with only a bit of trauma. The story is interesting, & the acting is good. The chemistry between the leads was weak (I didn't feel the chemistry with the FL in Weightlifting Fairy either). The transition to lovers seemed to move too fast for their history, which they hashed out with a 2 sentence conversation, but they were darling together.

    The Midnight Romance in Hagwon
    (2024 - Viki, 16 1:10 eps)

A treasured former student shows up to teach at FL's academy after leaving a promising job. He wants a new direction in life & she was his 1st love. There is an age gap, but it seems to only be about 5 yrs in the show (9 IRL). His arrival stirs up trouble mainly because he wants to teach the way she taught him - to learn & not memorize.

A wonderful commentary on the education system drives the plot through the 1st 12ish eps. The very harsh competition with the other academies was unsettling. The FL tries to avoid her feelings to protect him & herself. This comes across on screen well, but even when she finally admits it, it feels like she's still holding back.

The drama flounders at the end as we lose the education system commentary, & the war between the dueling academies becomes a farce.

    Dear.M
    (2022 - Viki, 12 1:10 eps)

Looking for a light, fluffy romance, I came across this. It delivered. A college romance heavy on the tropes: 3 couples, love triangles, no real crime, a couple of people to dislike.

The *surprise* was the ML!! This is his acting debut & I would have never known. He's an idol & sang a couple of times - great! I will now look into his music. I wondered why the MDL rating was an 8 - it's all his kPop fans. I have a feeling he'll be one to watch. He played an engineering student, so he didn't have to really go all out with the emotions, but he conveyed it all. I was in tears during the sister's wedding because of him.

It was interesting to learn a bit about cheerleading, college clubs, & becoming a broadcast announcer. Not a standout drama, but a fun watch.
