  1. Remember how we all warned that Brexit would shaft the UK car manufacturing industry and all the Brexiteers cried "Project Fear! Project Fear!"?

  2. "Driverless taxis set to launch in UK as soon as September"

I have no doubt that, once the technology is sufficiently mature, driverless cars will be safer than ones driven by humans. Humans cause a lot of crashes.

I am yet to be convinced that the technology will be sufficiently mature by September, but let's see.

I am also bothered by the built-in #DigitalExclusion. How are you supposed to hail a cab if you don't or can't have the app?

  13. OK, I think we've all been very unfair about AI. There was I thinking it wasn't going to bring us anything, but apparently it will bring us carnage.

  19. This is a huge mark of shame for the UK.

There is absolutely no reason why one of the world's richest countries shouldn't be able to keep measles at bay.

The causes are no doubt complex, but this really should be a solvable problem for a rich country with the political will to solve it.

  24. CW: Minneapolis shooting

Also good stuff from the BBC.

No-one could possibly look at this video and believe that the ICE agents were acting in self defence.

  25. CW: Minneapolis shooting

Good stuff from the NY Times.

Detailed and factual account of the murder of Alex Pretti by ICE agents, showing very clearly that the Trump administration's claim that it was "self defence" is utterly bogus.

    It was cold blooded murder.

  26. So it seems that one of my wifi access points on my home network has died.

Can't say it owes me much, it's about 9 years old.

What's a good brand for wifi access points these days? My old one was TP Link, which gave me 9 years of trouble-free wifi, so I would be fine with getting another one, but I'm open to other suggestions.

  27. "Hundreds of illegal waste tips operating in England - including 11 'super sites'"

The government could stop this overnight if they wanted to: just make it free to dispose of rubbish at licensed local authority sites.

Or at least cut the prices to the point where it's not worth the risk of dumping rubbish illegally.

But I don't suppose they'll do that, because they hate the thought of services being run for social benefit rather than profit.

  28. @crookedfootball.bsky.social I don't think Polanski or anyone else should be taking lessons on being "soft on Putin" from a PM who has done absolutely bugger all about the #RussiaReport since coming into office and has carefully calibrated the level of support he's giving to Ukraine to make sure that Ukraine never has enough support to actually win the war.

  29. I may be going on a business trip to Lisbon next month.

Still hoping to keep up my plan for taking the train instead of flying, and I figured if I can take the train to Riga, then how hard can it be to get to Lisbon?

It's dead easy to get from London to Madrid by train. Doing the last stretch from Madrid to Lisbon turns out to be way more complicated than you could possibly imagine. Basically a whole day's travelling. This makes me sad.
