In today's stupid #projects, I wondered if I could make a 7-segment looking display out of smart #WS2812B LEDs. The idea was to cut it in pieces, then repeat the 7-segment pattern so the individual LEDs would be in predictable spots. The ultimate goal is to make a huge one for the arcade some day, but this prototype is just 2 numbers and a minus sign for a thermometer.
I glued the chopped up LED strip onto a piece of acrylic board, soldered them together and then put some smoked polycarbonate on it to for the looks. This one has only 2 LEDs per segment, but it's easily readable from the intended distance. The corners and hanging hardware are 3D printed and made with #freecad.
As the WS2812Bs are RGB, I made the software change the readout color depending on how chilly or hot it is. It pulls the temperature over MQTT from my home server, that already gets the temperatures from other devices. I used #esp32 as it was super cheap and had WiFi onboard so I only needed 5 volts for it and the LEDs. -

"The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) has served as a pivotal platform for fostering cooperation among governments, civil society, the private sector and technical communities to collectively address the opportunities and challenges brought about by the digital age. The UN Global Digital Compact (GDC) has expanded the scope of the global digital governance agenda beyond the internet-related public policy issues outlined in the WSIS consensus. It has put the spotlight on global inequality, also calling attention to the concentration of market power, the challenges posed by emerging technologies, in particular artificial intelligence (AI), and the need for renewed and more effective cooperation.
The process of deliberation in the UN system through the recently adopted Global Digital Compact in September 2024 and the upcoming 20-year review of the WSIS Agenda (WSIS+20) in 2025 are more than routine milestones in the multilateral process and the global digital cooperation ecosystem. They signify major opportunities to examine the adequacy of our actions and regroup to meet the trajectories of digital injustice headlong. They also are a flashpoint within which to situate, develop and push forward a renewed vision of digitality.
In that context, APC will engage with the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) 2024 with the intention to both contribute to those conversations and to create spaces for exchange of perspectives and identification of priorities for the WSIS+20 review, including the renewal and expansion of the mandate of the IGF itself."

BARS Digital Event - Re-Awakening the Harp of the North: New Approaches to Walter Scott

This roundtable is comprised of scholars working within the Walter Scott Research Centre, University of Aberdeen. Following on from the Scott 250 celebrations and the award of a major AHRC grant to edit Scott’s poetry and engage new audiences, our proposed event aims to provide an insight into ongoing scholarship and new developments in Scott studies. This session will offer a brief insight into the work of the WSRC and the ways in which its editorial work enables new ways of thinking about Scott, the networks in which he operated, and his relationship to Romanticism.
Our speakers will be Alison Lumsden (University of Aberdeen), Nadia Faconti-Christodoulou (University of Aberdeen), Anna Fancett (University of Aberdeen), Kate Ferrier (University of Aberdeen), Natalie Tal Harries (University of Aberdeen).
