  1. Sooo, #backrest is not really my thing either. You can't change the connection settings of an existing repository, which means no credential rotation and no clean way to handle IP changes when a server moves. That's a pretty fundamental limitation for a backup solution.

I'll take a closer look at #restic without relying on a frontend.

I'm also skeptical about #Borg #Backup and, more broadly, backup tools built on Python/Ruby/shell stacks. There's a lot of room for subtle breakage without strict type safety, and pushing performance-critical parts down into C/C++/ASM layers doesn't exactly inspire confidence either.

Makes me wonder what enterprise solutions look like under the hood. Apparently #Veeam is C#, which is actually a reasonable choice - but requiring a Windows server (and not being OSS) makes it a non-starter for me.

  5. Having more backups in invaluable in these situations. Restore from an external drive connected to the #Turris is in progress.

  6. So I recently built an external network backup drive system for a client using a #RaspberryPi 4b and the lovely #DeskPi Pro V2 case from #GeeekPi.
I mounted a 4TB SSD inside, and have been testing it as a server for #borg #backup. (External USB drives will be used for removable storage).
The case is nicely built and metal, and includes the HSF and expansion board and an M.2 adapter board as well.
I wish it included their UPS hat, as that would make this a very self-contained system.

  7. Today's one liner: zfs list -t snapshot -o name -s creation | tail -n 1 | sed 's/zpool\/home@//g'. This is to ensure I backup from the latest snapshot in my borg backup setup. Had to revamp the script after migrating to #sanoid developed by @jimsalter . Maybe now I can get my head around zfs replications then setup syncoid. Wait I got to do test restores from the backups. Derp.

  8. #homelab What didn't go as well:
    - Needed flatpaks & appimages for more recent versions than in #leap but I'll live. I'm not ready for #tumbleweed for a daily driver.
    - Using the Vorta GUI for Borg backup under sudo. Kludged it with waypipe.
    - offlineimap (python2). There's a Py3 version but it was a no go even trying to use the git repo. Switched to #mbsync.
    - Fighting the firewall. Default on. Pulled my hair out for a while with mDNS etc.
    - atuin uses sqlite3 which behaves badly on ZFS.

  11. Is anyone aware of a CLI tool (Python, PHP, bash, whatever) that'll let me download the FULL contents of a Blogger blog (Blogspot), including media and metadata to json or xml? 🤔

It'd be nice if the tool included support for private/non-public blogs too (I realize it needs to handle authentication then).
