Today I hiked the Cedar Lake trail near #Carbondale. What a poorly maintained trail. I did see a bobcat, which isn't something I prefer to see on the trail. Luckily it wasn't feeling like enjoying a good mauling. I found about a hundred pinhead sized ticks exploring my legs afterward. My hiking partner did not enjoy. This airbnb gives me the creeps. All airbnb give me the creeps. #hiking

Things would be much better for Americans if our government was secular. But when the majority of those in power are religious and a considerable portion of them are religious extremists, no matter what the Constitution says our government is not secular. If I were going to believe in the existence of a god, it absolutely wouldn't be one that has, by allegedly speaking through men, declared me to be unequal to men.
If I'm going to support a politician, it absolutely won't be one who, primarily in concert with male politicians, judges, and the wealthy zealots who own them, declares me less autonomous and less valuable than a fetus in the eyes of the law to shore up their crumbling, diseased patriarchy.

Great TWiV covers the regulations surrounding dual use / gain-of-function research. I was very involved in the IC's discussion of these issues since the mid-2000s. Over time I developed exactly the same thoughts as the TWiV team about excessive alarmism and a vocal minority pushing to essentially ban all work. I found the same in certain IC agencies which eagerly made hay out of potential threats.
