As prefeituras do Brasil (de todas as regiões) ainda não entenderam muito bem o que a palavra TRANSPARÊNCIA significa. The adapters are expensive, and I didn't want to buy junk that didn't work, so I bought JEN YOO WINE Apple adapters.

But I'm cheap and I bought them used on ebay. So that helped.

rm: command not foundBooting to the recovery OS required downloading the ancient version of macOS off the Internet that would still run on this mac. And that version couldn't understand the FileVault that was on the disk.
Thus, the need for a bunch of adapters and target disk mode.

Some skipped details.
I had been using OpenCore to keep it running modern macOS long past Apple's official support death. The last patch I tried (Sonoma?) seems to have corrupted filevault.
At first, it would boot, prompt me for the password, then die. (it just froze, never getting off the boot screen)
I went to the recovery OS, got a shell, got it on the wired network, and started an rsync. Then I realized how many gigs of crap I really didn't need from my home directory. (Looking at you
.rustup). I stop it and start deleting stuff.I run rsync again. Now I'm annoyed at all the silly little files and directories. I think "Ya know, this drive has enough space on it that I can just make a tar of my whole home directory, transmit it across, and untar it faster"
Narrator: He should have just let the transfer go slowly
Somehow something about the tar command seems to have trashed the recovery OS partition. The classic mistake would be to build the tar file on the root partition and not the home directory, but I don't think I did.

Long tech story with a happy ending and a funny punchline. I'll relegate some details to the replies.
I have an old (2015) MacBook. Something got corrupted. I can get to the drive in the recovery OS, but it won't boot. No problem. I was thinking of putting debian on it anyway. I figure I'll boot to recovery, get the data off it, reformat, Bob's your uncle.
...skipping how I wrecked the recovery OS and got it to where it wouldn't boot at all...
Target disk mode to the rescue! You can boot a mac of this vintage, press the letter T during boot, and it comes up like it's an external drive. But it's thunderbolt. And all modern macs are USB-C.

My 2021-vintage mac can see the 2015-vintage mac as an external drive! It prompts me for the FileVault password. It doesn't work. I KNOW my password. I've typed it daily for the entire 11 years I've used this laptop. Oh shit. The data is right there but it's encrypted.
My wife has an account on my laptop and I know her password. I try it. No dice. Oh double shit. Am I really not going to get my data? I'm suspecting corruption in the FileVault keys/data.
10 years ago, when my son was 7 I put an account on here for him so that he could play some game on it. The password, when he was that age, was simply

I really need to learn to use bookmarks in my browsers. (I should also synchronise them across devices)
There’s a blog I read not to long ago (maybe August, July?) about the gestalt created by using AI tools. And that’s what I remember. Not only did I have to look up the word gestalt, because I didn’t really have a handle on it, the word appeared like 50 times in the blog post. It was good. But that’s all that stuck with me. I need to learn to make bookmarks.
