A lot of hacker stories are sadly very similar, a kid goes on a hacking spree, defacing websites for clout, isn’t careful with their opsec and finally gets busted.

Every now and then though a really weird story comes along that sounds like a plot from a 90’s technological thriller movie or TV show, this is one of those stories.

Death threats

Back in 2012 a series of threats involving attacks with knives, guns and bombs were made online in Japan against various locations and targets. This included a threat to assassinate the Japanese Emperor Akihito, to attack a kindergarten attended by the grandchildren of Japan’s Emperor, to bomb a Japan Airlines flight to New York, to run people over in the streets of Osaka, to attack attendees of a comic book convention, shopping malls, religious shrines and the headquarters of Nintendo.

The web posts were tracked to 4 people across Japan, 2 of whom the Japanese National Police Agency managed to “extract” confessions from. One of the people associated was a prominent figure in the anime industry, who was accused of issuing an online threat to blow up an aircraft.

The NPA didn’t get to consider the cases closed for long though. Emails were sent to a lawyer, broadcasters and journalists by someone claiming to be the real ‘Demon Killer’ hacker, these emails contained details that only the true culprit would know.

At this point one of the suspects who had confessed had been held for weeks. As none of the suspects could be linked to the emails, and forensic examinations of the accused’s computers revealed suspicious malware infections, the NPA had to make the embarrassing admission that they had been outfoxed by the real culprit. The NPA had effectively forced innocent people into confessing to crimes.

The chief of the NPA had to apologise and promise that his cyber-crime unit would improve, it was obvious that they were out of their depth. Japanese media outlets reported that forensic investigations of the computers associated with the initial suspects had not been conducted properly and that detectives were unaware of the existence of malware that could be used to take over a computer remotely.

It was obvious at this point that the wrongly accused victims had computers that were infected with what is known as a Remote Access Trojan (or ‘RAT’), a type of malware that allows the person who infected the systems to control them over the internet as if they were the legitimate administrator. In this case the RAT was called “iesys.exe”, it received instructions from the person controlling it via web posts on the “livedoor Shitaraba bulletin board” that were made through a proxy, preventing the authorities from tracing the person posting.

With an investigation that had thoroughly lost its way, in December of 2012, police offered a 3m yen (£16,822) reward for information leading to the arrest of the hacker.

On November 13, 2012, an email was sent to Yoji Ochiai, a lawyer who specializes in online related cases, and Japanese news organizations, stating “I made a mistake. I don’t want to get caught, so I’m going to kill myself.” Attached to the email was a photo of a doll with an ethernet cable around it tied like a noose. People believed at this point that perhaps the hacker would make good on his suicide threat, but that wasn’t the case.

On New Year’s Day, January 1st 2013, ‘Demon Killer’ sent another email out to various Japanese media outlets, emails that were followed up by another email that included a clue to the location of a certain cat.

The series of clues sent to Japanese media outlets eventually led investigators to a cat on Enoshima island, a popular tourist spot, with an SD card attached to a collar around its neck. This SD card contained the malware RAT (‘iesys.exe’) that had been used to infect unsuspecting 2chan and Shitaraba Bulletin Board messageboard users, enabling the ‘Demon Killer’ to make death threat posts online that appeared to come from their computer.

Posts made on the two messageboards that tempted users to click through to a website that hosted the malware were made via TOR, making it impossible to link back to the actual IP address of the hacker.

‘Demon Killer’ apprehended

Police were able to look back over CCTV footage from Enoshima island and eventually pinpoint footage of a former IT engineer, Yusuke Katayama, playing with the exact cat that was later found with the malware laden SD card on its collar. A motorbike belonging to the suspect was also visible IN CCTV footage from around the island around the same time.

Katayama had previously served 18 months in prison back in 2005 for trying to set fire to the home of the president of a Japanese entertainment conglomerate and making death threats online over something to do with illustrations of a cat that he took offence to. Katayama had changed his surname after his release from prison after this incident.

Katayama had initially pleaded not guilty, his lawyer had criticized the overall quality of the police investigation and had attempted to argue that Katayama himself might be a victim of an unknown hacker.

“[His] deeds, in a way, are a form of pleasure-seeking crime, one that’s symptomatic of this internet age, where people somehow frustrated with their lives no longer stab or punch somebody directly to vent their anger.

They instead turn to the world of cyberspace, where they deceive strangers and take grim satisfaction in watching them suffer.”

The FBI turned over evidence to the Japanese authorities that linked Katayama to a server that was used as online malware infrastructure. I believe that this server was Dropbox, where some of the malware binaries were hosted.

During the trial, while Yusuke Katayama sat in the court, emails arrived at various media organizations and to lawyers in Japan that stated “I am the one responsible. It has been a while hasn’t it?” and made mention of a “PC remote control virus case”. These emails initially helped Katayama claim that he had been arrested in error and he was released after a news conference in which he called for the charges brought against him to be dropped.

After his release on bail Katayama was seen by a police investigator wandering along the banks of the Arakawa River and burying something. Police examined the area by the river and found a smartphone. Forensics revealed that the smartphone had been used to send the emails received during the trial with a scheduling function to make them appear to have been sent by someone else.

It was around this time, March 22nd of 2014, that Yusuke changed his plea from innocent to guilty, he admitted that he was the accused hacker and that he had coded the malware used to take over the computers of innocent people and frame them.

In February of 2015 Yusuke Katayama was sentenced to 8 years in prison after having been found guilty of 10 crimional charges. Judge Katsunori Ohno presiding at Tokyo District Court described Katayama’s bomb hoax campaign as “vicious” and that “the purpose of it was [for police] to make wrongful arrests”, “in order to satisfy his selfish desire to outwit the investigative authorities, he framed a complete stranger as the culprit. This is one of the most heinous crimes of cybercrime.”
