Laserdisc Turtle (Ewan)
He/Him. A programmer with thespian leanings. I have a love of laserdiscs and physical media in general. Expect lots of rabbits, nerdiness, video editing, and unhealthy levels of Highlander 2.
LGBTQ+ welcome. Fascists not.
No I will not "just" use Linux!
Program material is recorded on the other side of this disc! ○ 片面ディスクです。うらがえしてお楽しみください。

Arrow have released a trailer for their upcoming Jackie Chan 4K box set...these transfers are looking gorgeous!
My wallet is crying, but my eyes are very happy.
-
Today's view...
-
Terrible weather for World Goth Day.
-
As someone who appreciates a nice watch...those Swatch pocket watches are surprisingly hideous. I'm rather bewildered by the frenzy they're causing.
-
Oh thank fuck!
-
A really nice touch is that the cardboard of the packing feels just like the thick fuzzy one used on the original LP, and the artwork is still embossed! Nice attention to detail.
-
Here's an in depth review by someone who seems to know what they're actually talking about if you want more:
https://immersiveaudioalbum.com/eagles-one-of-these-nights-dolby-atmos/
-
Reading reviews from people with full Atmos setups seems to confirm the front heavy mix, but apparently it also makes good use of the height speakers.
The live concert is also presented in Atmos.
A very nice set! My only complaint is that the original 70s Quad mix wasn't included.
-
Just had a lovely time listening to the new Dolby Atmos mix of The Eagles "One Of These Nights" on Blu Ray with my morning coffee.
Overall a very front heavy mix but one that adds so much clarity to the songs. I'd have preferred something a bit more surrounding, but this is still very, very nice. The opening track is the most stuck in the front of the room, with later tracks venturing out as the album goes on.
And for all you hoopy froods out there "Journey of the Sorcerer" sounds amazing!

I think the weirdest change Fincher has made to the Fight Club 4K has been found.
Curtain technology must have finally caught up to David Fincher's true intended director's vision in a way that just wasn't possible in 1999.
Utterly unhinged.
-
Usual caveat that I don't have an Atmos setup so I'm listening to the 7.1 core of the Atmos Mix on a 5.1 system...so obviously not the ideal setup...but the track definitely sounds odder than other Atmos mixes I've listened to.
Will be interesting to listen to the rest of the album when I get the chance.
-
Not sure when I'll have the chance to listen to the whole of "One Of These Nights" by The Eagles in Dolby Atmos but I just had a listen to the first track and it's a very odd mix.
The stereo vocals along with music is coming out of the front left and right speakers, while the centre speaker is on instrumental duty. Surround speakers are pretty much just backing vocals.
I've only ever heard digitised versions of the old vinyl quad mix but it was more surrounding. Will check out the rest soon.

Going through the screenshot comparisons of the new Fight Club 4K...clearly Fincher is deeply insecure about his work. So many tiny pointless little changes; remove a pimple here, add a skyscraper there, move a TV aerial slightly, throw in some lens flares! Utterly bizarre choices.
At least he's disowned Alien 3 so hopefully both cuts of that make it to 4K without being messed with.
-
I don't know if it's recent updates or websites not bothering with anything not Chromium any more but I'm encountered a lot of broken sites using Firefox lately.
-
Interesting...cinema listings have appeared for Michael Mann's Manhunter...THE FINAL CUT!
I've only ever seen the Theatrical Cut, not heard much praise for the Director's Cut. Interesting to see that it's getting another edit. Hopefully all three will come to 4K at some point.
Would be nice if we could get a Final Cut of The Keep some day! (And NO, there is no 210 minute cut of the Keep! Please let that BS rumour die at last!)

Even though I can't play this #VHD copy of #Highlander...I assume it's the exact same transfer of this #Laserdisc which I *can* play.
-
Yep, it finally happened; I now own a copy of #Highlander on a video format I can't actually play.
This isn't a #laserdisc, it's a #VHD (Video High Density)!
-
I also filled a couple of gaps in my collection of #Sayuri singles.
I still devastated that she's gone.
-
Yes! One of my favourite underrated gems, #CloudAtlas is finally getting a #4K #BluRay release! I hope there's a UK/EU version coming too so I can avoid importing.
Given the recent success of "Everything Everywhere All At Once" maybe there will be a warmer welcome waiting for this film nowadays.
-
I often find myself revisiting the music video for "Antinomy" by #Amazarashi - the first end theme for the #NierAutomata #anime.
Partly because of its ballsiness, partly because it's the most #YokoTaro thing I've ever seen outside of a video game, but mainly because it's better than the anime it was made for.
-
The long lost #FEX is being previewed on a live ahead of its release later this week.
I still can't quite believe that this is happening!
Skyscraper is incredible!
-
#Bearwood announced their new single, Our Land, a few weeks back, but it couldn't have arrived at a more relevant time.
"This country I love was built with our hands
This house is my home, this is our landThere's no honor in destruction of war
Time will crush you like all tyrants before"🇫🇮 🇺🇦
-
Looks like I just received my Valentine's Day present from #FEX!
If you told me this time last year that we'd not only know who recorded #TheMostMysteriousSong on the Internet but also have a physical copy in my hand along with even more songs from the band I wouldn't have believed you.
#SubwaysOfYourMind (#LikeTheWind) on glorious yellow vinyl!
-
Tragically we lost Sanketsu Shōjo #Sayuri (酸欠少女 #さユり) this year. To be honest I'm still coming to terms with it a bit. She was only 28 but she left behind three incredible albums and fans all around the world.
I'd heard a lot of J-Pop but never really got into it. The first time I heard her sing I was hooked.
It's still hard to picture Shinjuku without her blocking traffic with one of her impromptu street performances.
-
The first ever OFFICIAL upload of #TheMostMysteriousSong to YouTube.
Uploaded to FEX's own YouTube channel! New content coming soon apparently.
-
I LOVE this compilation of photos showing #Sayuri street live sessions getting interrupted by the police.
Before her debut Sayuri made a name for herself in Tokyo by essentially busking around the city with her guitar. She became so popular that the police often had to break up her sessions because the crowds she'd drawn were blocking traffic.
One post-debut live appearance outside Shinjuku station attracted over 2000 people!
-
While in many ways it feels like we're living in the bad timeline at the moment, the fact that #FEX performed an acoustic version of #SubwaysOfYourMind on German radio today proves that we're not in the worst one at least.
Honestly the ending to the whole #MostMysteriousSong saga could not have been more wholesome and perfect.

"All irregularities will be handled by the forces controlling each dimension. Transuranic heavy elements may not be used where there is life. Medium atomic weights are available: Gold, Lead, Copper, Jet, Diamond, Radium, Sapphire, Silver and Steel.
💎🪩
Sapphire and Steel have been assigned."
I finished up #SapphireAndSteel during lunch. Well that was a bloody brilliant series!
-
I just finished watching the last episode of the second serial of #SapphireAndSteel ...and bloody hell!
I was gripped by all eight episodes over the last week or so, and looking back I can see all the groundwork being laid for *that* ending...but I still didn't see it coming, or maybe I just didn't want to.
They certainly wouldn't have got away with a lot of this story on #DoctorWho! Saying that #Blakes7 would sometimes get this bleak.
Looking forward to starting series two sometime soon.
-
Enjoy a random #Highlander #BBFC Black Card.
This would have been shown in UK cinemas before the film starts...and it somehow ended up getting included on a #VHS release.
-
They've really gone all out on this set! Not only does it include both cuts of the film; but you also have your choice of aspect ratio!
The 4K disc contains #TheProphecy version in 4K HDR 2.35:1.
The Prophecy Blu Ray contains the film in 2K 2.35:1 with a 1.78:1 presentation as a special feature. The #GodsArmy Blu Ray disc presents that version of the film in 2K open matte 1.37:1, with a 1.78:1 widescreen version as a special feature.
The bonus disc has The Prophecy in open matte 1.37:1!

How about some cinematic #JimSteinman with "Nowhere Fast" from #StreetsOfFire?
-
I'm not really a #car person but I am an minor #audiophile and I got excited when I spotted that according the the manual my car should be able to handle #multichannel #audio playback!
However in practice all I seem to be able to get when I try various 5.1 #SurroundSound test files are the front left and right, all other channels silent. So it seems to know their 5.1, but only playing 2 channels out of front and rear speakers.
Any car/audio people have any suggestions? #Skoda #Fabia 3 #Bolero
-
Tonight I watched #SatoshiKon's #MillenniumActress and had a good cry.
-
Ever hear the acapella version of #BonnieTyler and #RoryDodd singing Total Eclipse of the Heart? The definitive version of the #JimSteinman classic in my opinion.
-
I keep catching this ad on YouTube TV out of the corner of my eye and find myself wondering if they've remade #TheRoom with #TimothéeChalamet. I'm guessing it's actually for perfume or something. #TommyWiseau

I did a bit more experimentation with the #Sinclair #TV80 pocket #CRT TV over lunch and managed to get a stable video signal from ONE VHS tape.
I wonder if I'm maybe falling foul of #Macrovision copy protection?
the other tapes I tried the audio came through fine, but the video is suffering from horizontal and vertical scrolling, but with this one tape I get a clear picture but hissy audio.
Could be wifi or electricals interfering, or maybe I need to try something other than VHS.
-
I managed to get a bit of signal from my #VCR into the #Sinclair #TV1 / #TV80 portable TV...but not a very stable one.
VCR menus came through nice and clear, but as soon as the #video started playing I got both horizontal and vertical scrolling that I couldn't seem to tune out.
Just wrapping a coax cable around the aerial for now which seems to work for others. Might need to try stripping the cable or something. Any tips, @avavsystems?
The yellow and dark bands are just camera artefacts.
-
I really need to stop going into that #vintage shop...
Just bought an almost totally useless #Sinclair portable black and white #CRT #TV from 1983!
The #TV80 is noteworthy for using a side mounted electron gun to give a fairly flat and thin CRT!
No video inputs, but a quick look online and it seems there are ways to force a signal in there either by modding or wrapping an RF cable around the aerial...so sounds like I've got myself another project.
It even comes with the (dead) battery!
