#MangaMonday 103 “Sayuri” by Rensuke Oshikiri

Norio Kamiki’s father just bought his dream home out in the country. Nori, his parents, siblings, and grandparents all move in, but something is not right in this house.

This is a #horror #manga and, for the first half, a fairly typical one. Oshikiri wrote it as a response to Japanese horror films, so the second half goes in an unexpected direction. It was originally collected into two volumes and some people dropped it after reading the first. It is now collected in a single-volume omnibus edition (Kodansha) so you won’t miss the change up.

Note that there is some violence and depictions of #suicide, but it’s not particularly gory.

I can't believe that it's already been a year since #Sayuri passed away. To be honest I'm still not entirely over it. I've never really got into J-Pop/rock but her music just grabbed me and refused to let go. Such an incredible talent. #さユり

Tragically we lost Sanketsu Shōjo #Sayuri (酸欠少女 #さユり) this year. To be honest I'm still coming to terms with it a bit. She was only 28 but she left behind three incredible albums and fans all around the world.

I'd heard a lot of J-Pop but never really got into it. The first time I heard her sing I was hooked.

It's still hard to picture Shinjuku without her blocking traffic with one of her impromptu street performances.

I LOVE this compilation of photos showing #Sayuri street live sessions getting interrupted by the police.

Before her debut Sayuri made a name for herself in Tokyo by essentially busking around the city with her guitar. She became so popular that the police often had to break up her sessions because the crowds she'd drawn were blocking traffic.

One post-debut live appearance outside Shinjuku station attracted over 2000 people!

As has become tradition when a musician I admire passes away I've poured out some whisky and will be spending a bit of time listening to some music by #Sayuri and watching some of her videos.

Usually I do this to celebrate a long life...this is the first time I've done this for a life cut so tragically short.

I was also left feeling pretty emotional after seeing this one.

It's just a simple video of #Sayuri sitting in her bathroom, using her laptop to record her performing her new song...but it's the earliest recording of one of my favourite songs of hers; Neverland.

She recorded it properly years later, though sadly it never got an album release, but it's amazing to hear the song already fully formed so long before that.

After not really being able to for the last few days I've spent a lot of today listening to #Sayuri's music. A little emotional, but it's helping.

I was familiar with a lot of her pre-debut work, especially her early busking videos, but I just came across a couple of incredible videos of her performing with her first band, Muu, when she was just 14 years old, and I'm blown away. You could see the talent even then. Both songs ended up on her debut album six years later.

If you want my personal recommendation - I'd encourage you to her acoustic album "Me / め" - I feel like it best captures Sayuri at her roots of busking on the open streets with just her and her guitar.

However, I do encourage you to go through her entire discography whenever you have the chance; both of her studio albums are really good!

It's been a day or two since I first heard the news that Sayuri passed away.

It almost feels like yesterday when I first heard her work through her songs Sore wa Chiisana Hikari no You na and Heikousen, used as the EDs for Erased and Scum's Wish respectively, and I still remember listening to her first album on the bus to and from high school. It feels like it was only the start of today when I waited for, then celebrating when her full discography became available on streaming platforms; then enjoying Hana no Tou, the ED for Lycoris Recoil, and witnessing the memes that came from it - not to mention me making my own meme out of love and admiration for her work. It feels like just moments ago when I celebrated the news of her marriage, and when I felt sad about her hiatus - with the hope that she would one day come back.

There's a lot of memories that I have with her music; just like many others, from people who've first found her through her debut single Mikazuki, to those who found her from her second (and unfortunately, final) album, and even those who are just now hearing her work. For everyone, it simply can not be denied that we were witness to Sayuri giving it her all through her work - pouring in as much of her passion, emotion, and breath as she possibly could.

But now, we find ourselves in a moment that might still feel unreal - her passing occurring at her prime, at the young age of 28 is something so tragic that a part of me still refuses to believe that this is our reality. Even a few days after her passing, it is likely one has not even come CLOSE to recognizing the gravity of her passing. Recognizing that there will never again be no more work from her (outside of anything released posthumously), that she'll never again provide her work to any other anime or medium, never again appear on The First Take, never again go on tour and playing live on stage or in the streets of Japan again, and that she'll never be able to take the opportunity to play abroad.

However, what she's left behind will last. People will continue to find and discover her music through word of mouth or from the anime she's gave her work to. People - including the artists of today and of the future - will continue to find meaning from her work and be inspired. Through all of this, all of her work, passion, emotion, and breath will still resonate. It's admittedly cliche; but even though she is no longer with us, Sayuri will still live on.
