  1. Watching another Classic from my #laserdisc Collection. „War Games“ really nice Picture for its Time and deluxe Letterbox Edition. So what Game is Matthew Broderick playing in the Arcade? #80smovies #retromovies #wargames

  2. Her: Babe, let’s keep it simple this evening and watch The Abyss.

Me: Haha, you’re never going to believe this, but which version?

We have the AC3 surround sound release, the widescreen and directors-approved Super35 full-screen version with the coffee-stained essay written by James Cameron, where he rants for 6 pages about how he prefers the full-screen release to the widescreen.

Someone get James Cameron on Mastodon because the level of detail in this essay is intense.

  3. Her: How many copies of Independence Day do you own on #LaserDisc?

    Me: Normal amount, why?

  4. RE: digipres.club/@foone/117150653

1994, watching Terminator 2 on LaserDisc:
"Hahaha, AI will destroy us all. We should fight back!"

2026, watching Terminator 2 on LaserDisc:
"Hahaha, AI will destroy us all. We should fight back!"

  5. @oppen I recently re-watched the original 9 seasons for the first time in 10 years, what a fantastic little journey.

I also have been collecting Laserdiscs lately and scored these for $5.

Watching X-Files in pristine #laserdisc quality is a mood.

  6. I somehow managed to score sealed DTS versions of Jurassic Park and The Lost World on #LaserDisc.

Jurassic Park was the first theatrical film released in DTS and also the first laserdisc to feature DTS surround sound as well. It features the theatrical mix from 1993.

Subsequent releases were remixed for near-field home theater environments.

There’s a lot of interesting “lost media” and sound mixes that are no longer available on modern releases.

Looking forward to opening these up.

  7. @Famicoman as i understand it, this is a teletext decoder specifically for laserdiscs which use teletext for subtitling. you might have better luck asking folks with a #laserdisc tag

  8. Apparently, this was the last DTS #laserdisc released in the US in 1999, which is pretty late for a laserdisc release.

  9. With the release of The Abyss: Special Edition on #Laserdisc James Cameron included a 6-page essay called "THE LETTERBOX HERESIES OR: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP WORRYING AND LOVE PAN & SCAN," which was typed up by him, in his own words, and slipped into the P&S release box set.

Of course, he shot The Abyss and T2 in Super35, and what is labeled as Pan & Scan is actually just an open matte full-frame composition. He advocated for the legitimacy of the full-frame version next to the letterboxed one.

  10. Oh, you’re a fan of Twin Peaks?

Do you even own the pilot episode on #laserdisc?

  11. #Laserdisc was the #NeoGeo of home theater.

Better in every way, unassailably cool, and if you had one, everyone wanted to come over just to see it in action.

Funny thing is, in 2026, that's still true. If you own a NeoGeo or a LaserDisc player, people still want to come over and see it in action.

  12. The #USSR’s first #LaserDisc player the Rus-501 built at the Ryazan Instrument Plant in 1988. Maybe a couple hundred were ever made.

It fired a helium-neon laser needing 2,000V. It only read CAV discs and was already obsolete in the West.

Also, opening the lid didn’t shut the laser off.

    Please do not look inside.

  13. #Laserdisc releases were sometimes so gorgeous. I miss this kind of attention to detail.

  14. Some absolute gems came in the mail today.

And yes, they’re factory sealed! Like $10 on eBay.

  15. Is there anything cooler in this world than watching Back to the Future on #laserdisc?

  16. Tonight’s #laserdisc is the ever wonderful Contact (1997).

I just previewed it on my setup, and it looks flawless! It’s a late-release laserdisc and the picture looks really amazing.

  17. Getting back into #Laserdisc collecting, I’m reminded of how weird fandoms have become. I see lots of folks with basic taste in movies overpricing laserdiscs that aren’t at all rare. Folks are buying sealed, Japanese versions of common laserdiscs just to never open them and put them on a wall next to action figurines.

Meanwhile, The Abyss: Special Edition Pan & Scan version (James Cameron’s preferred format for this film) goes for $30 and is ignored by everyone.

  18. Looking through an issue of What Video from 1988, I came across this dual disc #LaserDisc player from Pioneer. Looks like it could play both sides of each disc too.

  19. Tonight’s #laserdisc is a factory-sealed copy of Michael Mann’s Thief.

  20. The first time I took a picture of my current Pioneer LaserActive collection!

  21. Just got a factory-sealed copy of Light Sleeper on #laserdisc.

If you've never seen his film, it's fantastic. A rather serious look into midlife crisis, regret set against 1992 NYC.

Paul Schrader (American Gigolo) directed this, and it's part of his unofficial "man in a room" trilogy of films.

It has a rather fantastic soundtrack by Michael Been.
