Alert! Alarm!
My beloved bride had a cool idea today. We have a Sonos audio system in our living room. It’s how we get surround sound and movie theater audio goodness. She wanted to upgrade the system. Good idea, right? She ordered a new beam and we went to Best Buy to pick it up.
After, while we were still in the parking lot, she had another great idea. Wanna go for a mini road trip somewhere? Sure! How about the ocean? Sure! Off we went.
When we got home a couple hours later, Jen heard a noise. Oh wait! You don’t know the back story. Hold on a second while I fill you in.
Back story: Our house used to have a garage. Years ago we had it remodeled into a primary bedroom suite with an attached bathroom. The outflow pipe from the bathroom was far away from the outflow for the rest of the house and we had to have a pump installed. The pump is under the floor with a little trap door to get to it. That trap door had not been opened in the 500 years since we finished the remodel. It is located in a closet and we had put a big closet organizer into the closet and part of it was sitting on the trap door.
Okay, back to the main story. When we got home from the ocean a couple of hours later, Jen heard a noise. She was standing next to the bathroom and I was on the other side of the room. I thought the noise was a bird being loud and obnoxious outside. She said no, it wasn’t a bird. I then thought it was the mini-split system’s door being squeaky. She said no, it was not the mini-split. I stood next to her so that I could hear what she was hearing and I heard it too.
There were two sounds. One as an alarm beeping like crazy. The other was the pump running more or less continuously. I went into the closet with the trap door and sure enough, the beeping was coming from there. Well, shit.
We both had a job to do from that point. Mine was to clear almost everything out of the closet (there was a lot of stuff in there) and open the trap door. Jen’s was to find a plumber. Oh yeah, it’s Independence Day. A national holiday. Almost everyone in the country had the day off (except for the poor staff at Best Buy).
I was able to get to the pump. I had to move almost an entire wardrobe and partially disassemble the organizer but I did it. Jen was able to eventually get a plumber on the phone who could not come help tonight but did offer to help talk us through shutting down the pump until they could come… on Monday. While she was giving the plummer the details I found that the alarm beep was tied to a flashing red light with a label that said to open the unit to see what was causing the alarm. Well, I wasn’t doing that. There was also a button that said push to silence alarm. I pushed it. Oh what a relief.
So the alarm was still going off but it was silent now and at the plumber’s suggestion we killed the power to the pump from the circuit box. The situation has been remedied for now. On Monday the plumber will come and tell us that we need to replace the unit which should cost $10000000000000. Would that be preferable to finding out there is a clog in the sewage pipe? I don’t know. Would it be preferable to finding out there is a leak in the sewage pipe? Probably. I mean, our house doesn’t smell like donald trump so I don’t think our en suite bathroom is shitting itself. We’ll find out on Monday though.
Eventually we were able to relax and that lead to us putting up the new Sonos system. It got a little annoying trying to link everything together in their app, but eventually it all worked and now we are watching Project Hail Mary (again) and enjoying the kick ass audio.
Tomorrow I think I am going to go into Boston really early in the morning and wander around Beacon Hill and the riverwalk along the Charles with my cameras. I’m also officially into the 50 Songs in 90 Days Challenge, so there will be music to make too.
One thing is for sure… we are not going to use the primary bedroom suite’s bathroom for a couple of days.

#audio #surroundsound

I wonder sometimes if I like some shows and movies better than others because I have a full surround sound system in my living room.
Current "whoa" surround mixing examples:
- Alien:Earth S1E3 - last 5 minutes.
- Sinners - that music scene -

Mine was "interresting".Dad: My Games don't run. Can you have a look?
Turned out his setup stumbled overhttps://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pipewire/pipewire/-/issues/4722
Some proton games just refuse to start or break in interesting ways on steam and heroic.
TUXEDO OS updated there packages to 1.4.3-1tux1 earlier this week and this bug is present.
Gonna send 'em a message on Monday if they haven't fixed it already by then (they tend to be fast)

Hoping maybe the #Fediverse hive mind has some ideas about a problem.
My old workhorse Onkyo AV receiver died a few months back, and I replaced it with a Denon AVR-S970H. And it's driving me nuts.
My #TV is old, from the final generation of plasmas. Great picture. Sound is okay, but it only understands stereo and mono in uncompressed or AC-3 formats. Anything else sent to it - different codec, or multichannel/surround - is ignored and you get no sound. But that's okay!
Most of the things I watch that have stereo sound I just want to listen to through the TV anyways - TV shows, old non-spectacle movies, documentaries, all that sort of stuff. When I have a Big Movie with a #surround soundtrack, that's when I want to listen to it through the fancy speakers and the #AVR.
With my old #Onkyo, this was easy: the receiver always played the sound through itself and also sent it to the TV. If I wanted simple stereo, I'd just mute the receiver. If it was a surround sound thing, the TV just ignored it.
The #Denon... doesn't do this. I have to configure whether to output the sound through the TV, or through the AVR. There's no option for "both".

Pink Floyd in surround sound. Super Audio CD /SACD. High resolution format of the past and are still being made. These (and DVDA) are as awesome as vinyl records are for analog but are digital's peak. #pinkfloyd #sacd #dvdaudio #dvda #superaudiocd #SurroundSound #music

The Blue Man Group's AUDIO album is one of my favorite multi-channel high res 192/24 audio albums that I have. The mix itself, the incredible highs, the insanely rich base. Completely independent tracks written for each speaker. It's unfortunate that 5.1 music never really caught on, though I am happy that most live concerts recorded today are in 5.1. #music #highdefinition #highresolution #SurroundSound #Surround #audio #dvdaudio #sacd

Ugh, I missed the trailer drop 2-3 days ago on YouTube and the theater near me only has seats on the sides of the first two rows.
A theater in South Miami has a perfect seat left, but that's too far to travel since I've already experienced the concert show on AppleTV with my 4K tv and 5.1 surround system.
It's awesome 👏🏿
I'd love to see this in IMAX, but that doesn't seem possible.

So in my quest to get Dolby Pro Logic surround sound encoding in Godot, I have stumbled upon the docs for
AudioEffectStereoEnhance. It had no documentation until now with 4.4 coming out. But it appears to go about encoding matrix surround sound the same way as Dolby Pro Logic by phase shifting the rear channels. How exactly it does this is not explained and these descriptions are still not detailed enough, but I think I might finally be nearing the end of my quest for outdated surround sound lol
I will try to test this later and will report back if I find anything useful.

Take-aways
- buy your music directly from artists!
- buy or keep PHYSICAL MEDIA, because digital can always be taken away
- back up your physical media or digital in the OTHER format. Life happens.
- streaming services ALWAYS enshittify
- "free" (of payment) isn't actually FREE.
- speaking of which the only tru "free" is #FOSS
- fuck windowsand
- computer speakers ALWAYS suck. No, don't care how much you spent on those. Unless you are connecting your computer's sound card to a receiver, with a real amplifier, and speakers that deserve that name, what you are listening to now SUCKS.
- same apply to your Tv. Tv speakers SUCK, always have, since Pioneer killed the Kuro series ( ::tears:: )
- SOUNDBARS SUCK, get a real surround system. -

FTR, #atmos is utter garbage.
No, I don't care that you got conned into buying $2k of a shitty, plasticky, disposable system that added two extra channels, without a decent return/benefit for it.
"Atmos" is just (tldr) bouncing sound from the ceiling to simulate sound coming from above. Unless you are listening to the system in a room within the very, very narrow specs of ceiling height, material, etc, you just wasted bandwidth, materials (plastic, wood, wires, etc), and my patience. Even when configured to optimal specs, atmos sounds like dogshit.
#SurroundSound rules: K.I.S.S.
Can't beat *wired* speakers, connected to a decent, simple amp, A/V receivers are ok, see rule about amplifier.
90% of everything works with 5.1;
No, none of the "newer" codecs are better than DTS HD Master or Dolby TrueHD;
No, two subwoofers are not necessarily better than one;
Bluetooth is utter shit;
HDMI ARC is shit, and HDMI after 1.3 is about the same.
Korean companies never made anything audio that sounded remotely good or was not disposable crap;
PMPO rating is a scam;
More wattage does NOT mean better sound;
Louder doesn't mean better;
Brand cables are a scam;
Looks of a speaker don't mean shit for the sound;
More expensive doesn't mean better. -

Gerade mal #BaldursGate3 geshoppt.

I’m so full of inspiration after an exciting week at Sony’s “Immersive Creator Experience” camp. Here’s a picture of me and artist/producer Neffu working in the 4.1.4 audio room I built for the week. This was my first time really successfully doing music production with different creators while actually monitoring with an immersive audio setup. This year I relied a ton on Fab Filter’s Pro-R2, Sound Particles Density & inDelay, and Eventide’s Blackhole Immersive edition. Plus the quad “double ORTF” setup my pal Will built with Sony’s ECM-100 mics.

Lilbits: Intel Foundry to operate as a subsidiary, HTC Vive Focus Vision XR is a premium headset, and Bose unveils “Personal Surround Sound”
Setting up a surround-sound system at home usually involves arranging at least five speakers plus a subwoofer around the house. But Bose has introduced a new “Personal Surround Sound” system that lets you do it by pairing a soundbar placed by your TV with a pair of open-ear earbuds. Since the earbuds don’t cover your ears, they can act as rear speakers while still allowing you to hear audio […]

I'm not really a #car person but I am an minor #audiophile and I got excited when I spotted that according the the manual my car should be able to handle #multichannel #audio playback!
However in practice all I seem to be able to get when I try various 5.1 #SurroundSound test files are the front left and right, all other channels silent. So it seems to know their 5.1, but only playing 2 channels out of front and rear speakers.
Any car/audio people have any suggestions? #Skoda #Fabia 3 #Bolero

People of the fediverse, help me do:
I have quite a collection of 5.1 FLAC files, and some .dts and .ac3, of music albums recorded in #surroundSound. I used to be able to play these out to my amplifier with discrete 6-channel inputs from an Xbox with #XBMC, and later over HDMI from a raspi running # raspbmc
Nowadays I have Samsung Atmos soundbar and an #NvidiaShield Pro. What software can I use to play these files back now?
(a boost would be appreciated if you can’t answer yourself)

I notice quite the outbreak of surround sound enabled videos on oo-tube. Seems a bit late in the day for all that 5.1, 7.1 palava. Thought it was all Atmos or spatial audio now. All my life, somewhere, somebody was convinced that surround sound was the next big thing. Christ even #TheArchers went out in #Quadraphonic for the 3 people that could recieve it back in 1977 (presumably wiped). #SurroundSound #audio #youtube

🎶Thrilled to announce that I will be returning to #formatfestival for 2023, with more details to be shared soon.
The 'Soundscape' surround sound installation I was a part of in 2022 was so next-level and mesmerizing, thanks to D&B Audiotechnik so I'm already looking forward to this year's edition!

Today I learned that my #hearing / #AuditoryProcessing isn't getting worse - it's that #TV shows and films are now increasingly likely to mix their #audio for #SurroundSound, where the dialogue track is intended to come out of the speaker close behind you, so they tend to put it really quiet in the mix. Hence why I need to put subtitles on to follow dialogue on shows, but I never used to. Which is... bonkers, because who tf uses surround sound? Aren't we all streaming on our laptops?

Splitting a Surround Sound Audio File in Ubuntu
https://shkspr.mobi/blog/2015/07/splitting-a-surround-sound-audio-file-in-ubuntu/
See this update for a better way to do this.
Being mostly notes to myself and following on from my post on Quadrophonic files.
I have:
- A DTS album stored as a .WAV
- A .cue file with chapter markings
I want:
- The single large file to be split into individual chapters with one file per chapter.
- Each file to be multitrack (that is, to stay in surround sound)
It turns out, that there is no simple way to do this. There are tools to split stereo wav files by their cue sheet, but nothing for 5.1 files.
So, here's how I did it. This process uses mkvtools and avconv.
The Easy (But Fairly Manual) Way!
I can't find an automated way to do this from a cuesheet - so here's what you need to do.
A typical cue looks like
TRACK 01 AUDIO TITLE "Alice" PERFORMER "Bob" INDEX 01 00:00:00 TRACK 02 AUDIO TITLE "Carol" PERFORMER "Bob" INDEX 01 04:38:14 TRACK 03 AUDIO TITLE "Dolly" PERFORMER "Bob" INDEX 01 08:39:09...
Track 2 starts at 4 minutes, 38.14 seconds into the file. It finishes at (8m 39.09s - 4m 38.14s) = 4m 0.95s.
avconv -f dts -i original.wav -ss 00:04:38.014 -t 00:04:0.95 -acodec copy track2.wav
That is, avconv forced to use DTS, starting at 4.38.014 and finishing after 4m .95s, copying the codec into a new file.
Calculating Offsets
It's hard to manually calculate all the timings. One quick(ish) way to get them is by using
cueconvert.cueconvert -i cue -o toc cue.cue cue.toc
If you open the newly created .toc file, you should see something like:
FILE "track1.wav" 0 04:38:14FILE "track2.wav" 04:38:14 04:00:70FILE "track3" 08:39:09 04:38:57...
You can then use those timings as your -ss and -t values - remember to add the extra leading "00:".
Limitations
- The files aren't tagged / named correctly.
- It's a pain to calculate the timings correctly.
The Hard (But Somewhat Automated) Way!
Convert the .WAV to .MKV
avconv -i whatever.wav -acodec copy output.mkv
In some cases, avconv will think your 5.1 recording is stereo. Fix it by forcing the codec it detects.
avconv -f dts -i whatever.wav -acodec copy output.mkv
Create a Chapters File
MKVmerge require a specific format of chapter file which is different from a normal .cue file. Creating this will be a manual process.
CHAPTER01=00:00:00.000CHAPTER01NAME=Chapter 01CHAPTER02=00:05:06.03CHAPTER02NAME=Chapter 02CHAPTER03=00:10:12.000...
Save that as
chapters.txt.Add The Chapters to the .MKV
A single command for this one:
mkvmerge output.mkv --chapters chapters.txt -o withchapters.mkv
Split The MKV
There are a couple of ways to do this, I use:
mkvmerge withchapters.mkv --split chapters:all -o track.mkv
You'll now have track-001.mkv, track-002.mkv etc.
Limitations
At this point, we have two moderately annoying problems.
- The files aren't tagged / named correctly.
- The DTS audio can't be extracted properly!
That last one is rather a showstopper! For some reason, the .MKV files play back their audio properly. When trying to extract or convert it, all sorts of stream errors occur.
TODO
Either write a patch for avconv to get it to split by .cue - or write a small Python script to do everything automagically!
Any suggestions for a better way to do this? Stick them in the comments box.
