This week's evening with the parents:
Talking about music formats. Dad explaining that when he was a kid records were all 78s and they played one song per side.* And then there were 'long play' records and they played at a slower speed (33 and 1/3rd) and had 6 songs per side. And about the same time as this, there were 45's which were little and did one song per side and had a much bigger hole in the middle. (45's were a big deal when Dad was a teen because they were new and cheap to make and cheap to buy and all of the sudden kids were getting access to all this music they'd never heard before.)
Anyway, then you needed a record player that could adapt to the different kinds. Like, a big-hole-adaptor for the 45's and a switch to change to 3 speeds. And all of this is just making me realise that music media has been a big hot mess of format changes and competing technologies for a lot longer than I realised.**
Because I was born at the beginning of the '80s and all the parents still had record players and the kids were listening to tapes, and then I switched to CD's in the gap between GnR's Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II and then I went to college and everyone was downloading MP3s on Napster and Lime Wire and then it was all about iPods and well, then there's the hot mess we're in today
* I mean, there were no such thing as albums?! Have looked this up since I got home and 'albums' were originally a collection of records, like, in a little book, like a photo album
** Looking at the wikipedia article for "phonograph record" - it's even more of a mess than I realised
