Varnish, it's like MySQL, Gitea, ownCloud and OpenOffice?
Well we're all familiar with MariaDB, Forgejo, and LibreOffice, now one group that is likening the creation of those forks by the original development teams is also asking folks (for the sake of understanding) that #Vinyl-cache is the original, unbroken codebase that was once #Varnish, yet furthermore, is also akin to other software such as those others mentioned above both pre and post forking.

Obviously, this could be confusing. Which should you use? which is the original? which is better?
Honestly, this is a matter of philosophy, business, and other matters of choice; but not so much in substance - yet. These two code bases haven't had much time to diverge, but they are, and have been, for a bit now. Both are FOSS. Both (or at least one) claims to be the continuation of a two decades old code base. Here's what's important now, and how you might want to come to your own conclusions as to which one to choose moving forward.
#Sun_Microsystems manufactured some of the most admired and trusted enterprise server hardware platforms. They also created and maintained #Solaris (SunOS), and they scooped up the custodianship for what was once Star Office in the form of #OpenOffice. They also brought Monty's #MySQL into the fold, while VirtualBox was another free offering.
#Sun was acquired by the #Evil_EllisonCo, aka, #Oracle. Immediately, the company was dismantled. Servers rebranded, while the OpenOffice developer team mutinied under the tutelage of Ellison, and then departed forming "The Document Foundation (TDF) in the process - a fork, #LibreOffice resulted.
Monty Widenius, already soured on the state of MySQL's place at the table with Oracle created the fork, MariaDB (Slackware Linux was the first major Linux distro to include MariaDB as the default during installation of the OS).
MySQL had much use for Oracle but Not OpenOffice (aka OOo), and Ellison refused to give the name to the Document Foundation, so it languished in the Apache Incubator, where he had gifted it, for many years.
Another famous new name that is essentially the original team of creators and developers is #NextCloud, and yes, #ownCloud does still exist... somewhere, or so I'm told ;)
When the three people in charge of steering and the custodianship of Gitea Formed a couple of for profit companies and assigned all trade and service marks of the product to those companies, it caused a great stir within the FOSS community (because this was the de facto leading #FOSS version of a code forge especially appropriate to host FOSS projects). A new Fork, #Forgejo was birthed.
So in a nutshell, When the Varnish project bootstrapped a for profit corporation to operate under (even though at this time it's still FOSS), it likewise spawned a fork of itself, and like the others, the defecting developers created the name #Vinyl, and forked Varnish-cache so that it is Vinyl-cache that continues in the tradition of FOSS while it's expected that Varnish-cache will continue to diverge from the direction of the original code base and philosophy.

@geotux ich schließe mich an. #OpenOffice wird seit Jahren extrem vernachlässigt, hat eine deutlich schlechtere Kompatibilität zu MS-Office-Formaten und insbesondere Aufgrund zahlreicher Sicherheitsprobleme ist höchste Vorsicht bzw der Wechsel zu @libreoffice angeraten, da Office-Dokumente auf Grund ihrer Komplexität und historischen Designsünden technischer Natur ein großes Einfallstor ins System für Schadsoftware darstellen!

@Das_blaue_Pony 2/2 Hat man sich von TDF vorher Gedanken gemacht. Viele ist noch in Erinnerung wie es mit #OpenOffice verlaufen ist. Damals sind die Entwickler zu #LO gewechselt. Diese "Angst" schadet nicht nur dem freien Office, auch kommt als Antwort von TDF keine Reaktion. Das im Gremium keine Entwickler mehr sitzen wird auch nicht eingegangen. Für mich sieht das nach keinen plan aus. Colla. steht zumindest aus meiner Sicht besser da - was die Berichterstattung und Deutungshoheit an geht.

.@gborn Konnte es erst jetzt testen: #LibreOffice 26.2.1 und andere frieren unter Windows 10 LTSC auch mit den März-Patches den Rechner komplett ein.
Dann bleibt hier für die Studis aktuell nur #OpenOffice als MSO-Alternative verfügbar. Schade, dass sich aus der LO-Ecke niemand dazu äußert.

I know it is silly, but sometimes I yearn to go back to #Corel #WordPerfect. I've used #LibreOffice since it forked from #OpenOffice, but WordPerfect still to this day can be purchased once and just used. It's the way professional software should be sold. Not to corpo-simp or anything, but still. Software developers gotta make money and that seems like the ethical way to do it, generally.

Har installert #gnumeric , men også #onlyoffice for å teste ut ulike alternativer.
Har også brukt #libreoffice og #openoffice.
Har ikke funnet noe som ikke gjør at jeg ikke kan bruke det ene eller det andre - jeg er ikke så avansert på hjemmebane på kontor applikasjoner. Trenger å kunne føre budsjett, skrive et brev, kanskje lage en presentasjon i ny og ne.
Det viktigste er at formatet er universalt og kan åpnes overalt. Resten blir subjektivt og hva man liker best.

Whenever I see people talking about LIbreOffice, I think back to the early days of GNOME of AbiWord and Gnumeric.
While they didn't have all the bells and whistles of LibreOffice, they were a delight to use- fast, easy, and I'd say they were fun too.
Yes, StarOffice was functional and powerful, it was never really *fun*. While I'm glad it was freed and made into OpenOffice, then LibreOffice, I wish the simpler tools had persisted.

Solo uso #LibreOffice por falta de alternativas. Ahora está tan hinchado y engorroso que no es muy divertido trabajar con él. También me molesta que los componentes superfluos #Base, #Impress, #Draw y #Math, es decir, 2/3 de los programas, siempre se instalen automáticamente.
No, #OpenOffice es igual en verde. Incluso compré una licencia para #SoftMaker una vez, pero cuando cambiaron a la tontería Microsoft Ribbon, salió volando de mi computadora. No usaré Chinese Office en mi PC y #gnumeric se desvía demasiado del estándar y modifica masivamente las tablas existentes. Y #Calligra también es solo un paquete completo en el que ya perdí interés de antemano.
Es una pena que aquí no se reconozca la necesidad de productos individuales especializados.

I only use #LibreOffice for lack of alternatives. It's now so bloated and cumbersome that it's not much fun to work with. I'm also annoyed that the superfluous components #Base, #Impress, #Draw and #Math, i.e. 2/3 of the programs, are always installed automatically.
No, #OpenOffice is the same in green. I even bought a license for #SoftMaker once, but when they switched to the Microsoft Ribbon nonsense, it flew off my computer. I won't be using the Chinese Office on my PC and #gnumeric deviates too much from the standard and massively modifies existing tables. And #Calligra is also just a complete package that I've already lost interest in beforehand.
It's a shame that the need for specialized individual products is not recognized here.

Ich nutze #LibreOffice ja nur noch aus Mangel an Alternativen. Es ist inzwischen so aufgebläht und behäbig, dass die Arbeit damit wenig Freude bereitet. Zudem ärgert mich, dass die überflüssigen Komponenten #Base, #Impress, #Draw und #Math, also 2/3 der Programme, stets automatisch mitinstalliert werden.
Nein, #OpenOffice ist das gleiche in grün. Für #SoftMaker hatte ich sogar mal eine Lizenz gekauft, aber als man dort auf den Microsoft Ribbon Schwachsinn wechselte, flog es vom Rechner. Das chinesische Office kommt mir nicht auf den PC und #gnumeric weicht zu sehr vom Standard ab und baut vorhandene Tabellen massiv um. Und #Calligra ist auch nur ein komplettes Paket, wo mir die Lust schon im Vorwege vergangen ist.
Schade, dass hier der Bedarf für spezialisierte Einzelprodukte nicht erkannt wird.

So that you need to speak out loud for the remote person to hear you, and you've got the computer's speakers up so you can all hear that person.
So that *all of us* can — and *must* — hear all of you.😠

My Apple Card flagged the renewal to Microsoft 365 as fraud. Not kidding. But then again the AC flags a lot of stuff as fraud (Pro tip DO NOT rely on this card for travel) and it's normally annoying as hell but this time it reminded me to just cancel and use OpenOffice. I only edit one spreadsheet, and that only because Tableau won't read numbers files.
