  1. Still dahlia season! I can't remember what this one is called because I planted her like three years ago, maybe? I wouldn't think that Virginia would be warm enough for dahlias to be a perennial, but here we are hah.

  12. CW: speculation on human wishes to be "useful"

    @datarama

Interesting topic, thanks. Yeah, I too have the feeling it's "deeper than culture".

My intuition, and I could be wrong, is that the wish to make a difference in the world is intrinsic to humans. I feel like quite a lot of vandalism (when not done for reasons of politics or resentment) is actually this impulse combined with "having nothing better to do".

I'm not saying humans can't _ever_ enjoy feeling they can't have any effect on the world, because I think that can feel good as a temporary holiday, especially if you're over-functioning the rest of the time. Like if your only "time off" is when you physically can't do anything! But most people would find it highly unsatisfactory as a long-term state.

I think for most people it's also a preference for the results to be helpful to other humans (or other entities), and the big variable is the scope of which humans. Most people doing killing and hurting have it put together in their heads that they're helping _their_ lot.

I think there _can_ be people whose group is only themself. I'm not sure whether that's always from childhood abuse/neglect or whether some is genetic.

Of course there is also a lot of culture involved around this territory: things like _what_ is considered useful at different times and places, how children are raised in relation to their own autonomy, whether it's considered important for everyone to have a role where they _can_ contribute, etc.

  13. Watched the Stranger Things theater-play prequel in The Phoenix.

Amazing staging. The lights and projections and choreography and sets were dumbfounding. Whole stage of two dozen people rotating around and pacing about on the rotating stages near made me dizzy.

And that was the best thing about it. Yes.

Had the same mood as the show. Mostly that's music I guess.

I barely remember the Netflix show, only watched two seasons before losing interest. Guess this was all leading up to 11 being born.

Some of our party left early coz the story was so uninspiring but I barely noticed that, being entranced by the spectacle.

  14. CW: AI made maths proofs

They tell me that Open AI have solved four hundred previously open maths problems this week.

The news media, and even the mathematicians, seem quite credulous about it.

No way to know how many of those will really stand up in the end. Lots of proofs turn out not to be really proofs coz they have a mistake, and AI is quite good at discovering mistakes as well as now apparently discovering maths.

Some of them are counter-examples that prove the conjecture is false and those are gonna be good at last. Machines can check it.

Some have other types of mechanical machine-checkable proof, which is interesting in that we can all believe the checker-machine: coz it's deterministic and understandable.

We can't trust the machine that isn't deterministic or understandable as much though.

GPT says these things are true. Now maths people have to check, because OpenAI staff aren't expert mathematicians either, mostly.

Some of the 400 proofs will fall, I'm sure.

But if a machine can prove a thing to itself, but not explain it to any person, is it really doing maths? Even if it's correct more often than people are? Or is doing maths more about making meat understand a thing?

    🤔

I'm sure I can't tell if the proofs are true or not. No point me reading them. Mostly won't even understand the question. The boundary of my meager meat-mind's maths-understanding was around barely-degree level.

Can the academic discipline continue as one which is devoted mostly to trying to understand the output of a machine writing about maths, which is mostly right but nobody can really tell without an entire academic discipline trying to check.

In other words, mathematicians now also face a spam problem familiar to many github project leads.

  15. Concept: A deslop distro that packages all the forks of projects that got slopped *under the original name* without permission. The slop jockeys' reactions would be priceless.

  16. The desire to insert something you control into the dependency graphs of other human beings, at scale, is a fundamentally capitalist desire.

Understand that when you see people doing it and you're deciding who to trust.

  17. Ethically from a standpoint of betrayal of users, past contributors, and copyright holders, I see a FOSS project going slop as equivalent to a using a dubious CLA to relicense to something non-free and take the project commercial.

It should be equally damning and equally certain to produce a fork that renders irrelevant the ppl behaving badly.

  18. RE: neuromatch.social/@jonny/11743

This shouldn't be surprising to anyone who understands how the parlor tricks work, but it's hilarious that Facebook's bot that lets you trivially pwn its execution environment has all this stuff accessible for you to observe directly.

  19. Lazyweb, I'm looking for a utility to combine pages preared for print (in PDF) in a very particular way for printing double-sided.

16 source pages get mapped to one 2-sided output page as:

    Front:
    2 3
    6 7
    10 11
    14 15

    Back:
    4 1
    8 5
    12 9
    16 13

So that each page cuts into 4 horizontal strips which then fold in half to produce 4 consecutive pages.

ISTR there was a command line utility that could script this sort of thing, but I can't remember the name...
