Hello again, Portfolio Day! I'm an adorable sergal, and I do most anything: characters, concepts, texture work, level design, and more!
(tossing this into the void, but if you want to post or quote with your own portfolio, go ahead and I will boost!)

New area, new colours! Also, every good map should have a Secret High Spot where you can grab a cool weapon.

#doom3 #idtech4 #mapping #mapjam #mappingjam
@Adorable_Sergal has hosted an idtech4/doom3 mappingjam event over on itch.io... https://itch.io/jam/doom3-spookyjam-2023 .
As a longtime doom3 player, i sure would love it if d3 mapmaking would become even half as active as #quake2 ! -
Well, that wraps up another #SolarPunkSunday. TY to @MaQuest , @BrambleBearGrrrauwling , @Adorable_Sergal and @jblue for their posts with the hashtag, and a big thank you to everyone who posted such great content and discussions! Not sure what we'll post about next week, but we'll figure it out. Meanwhile, #StayCool!

So I finished Tegmark's "Our Mathematical Universe" which was definitely not as annoying as Loeb's book, but I think that's because I kinda expect mathematicians to be total fucking weirdos.
"Our Mathematical Universe" is one of those books that has a few chapters that don't age well. There's bits near the end when Tegmark waxes about how awesome the Singularity will be, and haha oof, that shit probably sounded way more cool and exciting a decade ago.
The rest of it is kinda take it or leave it, like this all feels like semantics and general labelling issues right? Like, what is a particle? What stuff is a particle made of? What if it's ✨ made of math? ✨ Sure, why not? It's about as good as any other guess we have.
The unfortunate thing (for me) is that I've been exposed to stuff like this all my life, this isn't really *new* information for me, I'm familiar with the Copenhagen interpretation of QM, I'm familiar with the different varieties and levels of parallel universes, etc. I want something more.
And that's very much a 'me' issue, because really the only place to go from here is to university to actually learn particle physics or whatever, and I ain't got time for that. Would that I could just learn everything, but I can't, I learned all the superficial stuff, so now documentaries bore me.
Do I recommend "Our Mathematical Universe"? Eh. I guess if you want a discussion into some of the peculiarities of QM and parallel universes, sure? But I'd also read a lot of other books and watch a lot of other documentaries just to round things out, there's a lot of voices in this space.
One thing that I feel "Our Mathematical Universe" covers well is the phenomenon of being "scooped" while doing research, like hey, it happens. You could get palpitations wondering if you're The Very First with an idea, then casually read a 50 year old paper and realize that no, you are not.

inventing a time machine to go back in time to ask myself when i added an authenticator app to my Discord account because for the life of me i cannot find where or when i did that and that seems like a bad thing, especially since it's asking me for 6 digit codes to even turn off authenticators

bleh, i should log into path of titans again
my raptor is going to wake up covered in dust and stumble out of the cave and see flying head spaceships or some shit

i feel like yinglets *would* be radiation-hardened, like they'd just be creatures that everyone would be intensely confused as to how they could survive, like there'd be some "forbidden valley" that has a uranium vein in it and yinglets would be like "oh the place with giant mutant clams? DELICIOUS"

Still no realtime lighting preview, sadly. I really wish DarkRadiant handled Q4 assets better than it currently does, which is to say not really well at all.
"Shader not found" everywhere!

I guess working in Netradiant Custom is viable, but you have to open a Quake 4 map that already has single player entities in it.
If you open it fresh, there is a bare definition file it must have internally that doesn't seem to load a full entity list, not even guns.
But if you open a map populated with the proper entities, NRC figures out that it needs those, loads them properly and allows you to drop in stuff like those weapons which previously were gone in the right-click menu list
There doesn't seem to be any way other than this to convince NRC to use proper defs
More puzzlingly, this is a per-session thing. If you start out with a blank slate with an incorrect entity catalogue loaded, if you open an existing map, it does not pull the new list. You have to set NRC to reload the last map on startup, close out and then restart NRC with the proper map.
