Cheeky #WhatImPlaying update for July 19th.
#AdvanceWars has taken up any and all of my #Gaming time this last two weeks. A deadly combination of absolutely loving the game and having a shiny new Retro handheld to play it on (RG477v).
I finished the game last night. I cheated on the final mission because honestly, that was just too much for my stressed out brain to compute.
Next week? I'm hoping to start up #Denshattack on my Steamdeck. If that doesn't click then maybe it's time I hit up a #Soulslike. I've only played like one of them this year, and that was DLC for LiesOfP.

I haven't had a blog since HowDoYouSpell.cool died but i can feel a post brewing about Nier Automata vs Lies of P with a brief detour through Tales of Berseria
Thematically, "The Murderous Robots are the Bad Guys(?)"
Mechanically, while Lies of P (and Bloodborne) offer a faster, more aggressive, more melee centric Soulslike experience, they still offer a block button and a stamina gauge and a more measured approach to combat. Every move is a commitment, every button is a risk. There are no mid battle cutscenes, no attack strings. But you can block and you get a limited amount of free healingCombat in Nier, so far while playing on Hard, operates on a different, singular rule:
Don't get hit.
Restoring health is expensive and even early bosses will one-shot you if you get hit by the wrong attack. You can shoot but you can't autolock (on Hard and above) but getting hit is a much bigger deal than it is on normal.Iunno, neither is bad, but they want different things. Im still playing and thinking through it, but i know which set of expectations is familiar to me

They know how to sell movement and first-person-combat, but I don't think #soulslike mechanics is a great sell nowadays where you have a lot of soulslike games around each month.

Question is, what?
I've never touched #DarkSoulsII and frankly I'm a little scared of the runbacks.
I have played some #LordsOfTheFallen but hated the split-realities mechanic.
I've got #Thymesia ready to go on my Steamdeck but originally bounced off it before.
I've been meaning to take another run through #Sekiro as well. Maybe it's time I hit that one up?
