You know what? I've only played one Soulslike in 2026 and I'm getting the urge to do just that.
Question is, what?
I've never touched #DarkSoulsII and frankly I'm a little scared of the runbacks.
I have played some #LordsOfTheFallen but hated the split-realities mechanic.
I've got #Thymesia ready to go on my Steamdeck but originally bounced off it before.
I've been meaning to take another run through #Sekiro as well. Maybe it's time I hit that one up?
What to do, what to do.
-
And that’s it. Lords of the Fallen is one of the strangest gaming experiences I’ve ever had. On the one hand, I found myself regularly frustrated by the technical issues and many design choices; on the other hand, the game was a lot of fun in the moments in between. I’m looking forward to the sequel. There’s a lot of potential.
-
Did I just die? Did I just come back to life? Did the boss just die? Did I unlock a new class? What’s going? 😄
-
After making my way through an area whose architecture in marble and red tones evoked Roman style, I opened the grand gates to the Empyrean and was greeted by a rainy scene in rich browns and golds. The game is beautiful and features (albeit only occasionally) stunning transitions from one area to the next.
-
One of the nicer aspects of Lords of the Fallen is its flexibility. I turned my bearded polearm butcher into a nimble sword-wielding priestess. Not only is there a respec option, but you can also go back to the character creator and redesign your character. I’m also into fashion souls now and I put on some cool-looking armour instead of the kind with the best stats. The best defence is still not getting hit and looking sharp.
-
Lords of the Fallen oscillates between fun and frustration. Design choices and bugs make the game hard to enjoy at times. Occasionally you can’t enter the boss arena in co-op mode. My partner died in the arena, but I can’t revive them and can’t even run back to the nearest checkpoint because the game doesn’t allow players to be that far apart. So that was the end of the co-op session, which left a sour taste.
-
In Lords of the Fallen, I started out as a stalwart knight, wielding a shield and a sword. Then I switched to dancing around my enemies with daggers. Now, I’m wearing heavy armor and thrashing everyone with polearms. And all with the same character. I really like the respec option in this game. I’d love to see it in every Soulslike.
-
I tried playing Lords of the Fallen in the style of Dark Souls, using a shield, but I found the system to be very inconsistent. Now, I’m playing it in the style of Bloodborne, without a shield. It works better for me. As far as I can tell, the game allows for a variety of playstyles. Respec costs 8,000 Vigor, which is reasonable by the middle of the game. However, it could have been cheaper to allow more experimentation.
-
Lords of the Fallen has some crazy modifiers that I haven’t seen in any other Soulslike games. For example, sometimes the attack button stops working, or the block button, or enemies lose their hitboxes and become invulnerable. It’s all great when you’re carrying thousands of Vigor (the in-game currency). You never know what the game will surprise you with next. 🤡
-
I’m not yet convinced by Lords of the Fallen. There are several design choices that I don’t like in a Soulslike, such as taking damage during certain animations. The game looks good but is a technical mess on the PlayStation. Stuttering, lagging, pop-ins, items and buttons not registering, to name a few issues. I played co-op with a random player for a few hours, and it was fun.

#Summary for February 2026 https://no-pe.netlify.app/2026-02-summary/
– #PredatorBadlands is pretty enjoyable;
– #DecayOfLogos is inspired by Dark Souls and now free;
– I also replayed the best #soulslike (joke) by #HelloGames – #TheLastCampfire;
– #LogitechG304 and #RazerOrochiV2 are both good mice with programmable buttons and on-board memory. -

CW: Lords of the Fallen (2014)
➤I fought some poison beast. Kind of tough because I still got poisoned even if I blocked.
➤I didn't know where to go for these other side quests so I decided to just continue on.
➤Yetka suggests I can avoid the next boss to show me something, but I have no idea what path around she was talking about.
➤This boss was a little tricky. He does a long combo which I could block, but wouldn't have the energy to counterattack after.
➤The guy who wanted the skulls is just gone. I didn't realize the sidequest was limited.
➤New area to seek out the last lord. There's these ghost enemies you can only hurt with magic. I'm crawling through this area because I have to wait for my MP bar to recharge several times over for each one.
➤I got a better rune for my axe, but I'd still like to find a better one. I've found multiple greataxes, poleswords, and broadswords at this point. -
CW: Lords of the Fallen (2014)
➤I fought the Champion and won on the first try. He's pretty quick, but it wasn't too bad of a fight.
➤It turns out this is where I was supposed to go. Nice.
➤Okay, Antanas wants me to fight a god. The plan is to seek out the remaining lords and beat them. My sage friend suspects something is up though...
➤Lots of sidequests I can do. If only there was a way to keep track of them.
➤Oh yeah, that monk wanted me to find the signs of Antanas and I've had that thing equipped in my armor to reveal them. I have not found any. Silly, I could just lead him directly there now that I have access.
➤I can shoot open those orange symbols.
➤Troll boss is rough. Huge reach and damage and getting in to attack is difficult. Running in burns all your stamina. The hitbox for the heel is janky and the targeting will just untarget randomly. Blocking the attacks is inconsistent.
➤I feel my damage is starting to fall off. I to find another axe or sword -
CW: Lords of the Fallen (2014)
➤In this hostile realm some screaming dude is asking for human skulls in exchange for a magic shield. I'm on board for this deal as long as he doesn't ask why I'm carrying these skulls around. Also, he wants more than I have so I need to find more.
➤I'm getting real annoyed at these fire archers. Funny how the damage is reduced if I'm shielding. How does a shield block fire that's on you?
➤I was going to backtrack for some of those portals, but I guess I'll head to the dungeon area again since I was right there.
➤Those buttons I kept finding? Your prayer can hold them down. I've been missing secrets this whole time.
➤Lots of bugs here. A closed door looked open because the model was offset. I also grabbed an item through a wall. I fell in a hole and died, but respawned in the same room.
➤Opening and checking all these jail cells is tedious. There's stuff most of the time.
➤Arena seems to be open, let's check it out... -
CW: Lords of the Fallen (2014)
➤I went through a portal and fought some enemies in the "lost my glasses" dimension. Making everything super blurry away from you is certainly a choice.
➤Through the graveyard and on to the next boss.
➤Every quarter of his health lost the boss will do an instakill attack. It's slow.
➤Maybe instead of a snarky loading screen tooltip telling me how to survive it you could make the stone fixtures you are supposed to stand in more obvious.
➤And while I'll complaining, the vine attack shouldn't damage you before the vine comes out of the ground. The ground just glows beneath you and you take damage, then the vine animation plays.
➤I wandered around some jail area, but everything was really beefy. It turned out that's not where to go next. The description of the quest sounded like I had to kill multiple bosses before talking to the sage guy. -
I can't get into *anything* at the moment. My PS5 and Series X have been sat dormant for months and my Steamdeck has turned into a #CloneHero machine.
I am spending a fair bit more time playing on the Anbernic though. I finished #SuperMarioLand2 the other day, and had a blast whilst doing so.
I'm wondering if maybe I should just accept that nothing is going to take right now and move my attention onto my big #LordOfTheRings re-read that I've got planned for next year?
That or....maybe it's time to finally jump back in with another #Soulslike. Looking at you #LordsOfTheFallen.

Speaking of #soulslike shooters, #RemnantFromTheAshes seems the most – sorry for the technical term – cool. It starts with a person with a sword talking about a dragon. But wait, is it post-apocalyptic Earth? Plant-based enemies? A bunker from the 60s that might have something to do with it… I actually almost finished it before, got annoyed by the last boss. I did finished #ChronosBeforeTheAshes, it has some interesting stuff of its own.
Ready to root out the problem now! (Sorry for the pun.)

January 26, 2024 - Day 391 - NewPlay Review
Total NewPlays: 427Game: Elderborn
Platform: Steam
Released: Jan 31, 2020

Elderborn is a first-person Soulslike slasher melee-combat game.
The game opens with a bombastic monologue from the lead character (at least you can choose their gender), who lays out a brief history of how you got to the point of entering the locked-down city of doom, but there was nothing unique about it that grabbed me. It was just... filler.
(Sidenote: If your game supports 3440x1440 ultrawide, you need a FOV slider. Playing a first-person game through a fisheye lens is not fun.)
The graphics and design feel average. It feels like they forgot the narrative part of a Soulslike that gives you a reason to press on.
Ultimately, the biggest problem with the game is that it's just boring. Run to room. Cut down undead. Run to next room that looks like previous room. Cut down undead. Rinse and repeat.
Elderborn is:
1: Nope

Trying out NIOH 2 again. I've come to the realization in retrospection, that while I'm really not used to using consumable items in souls-like games, the fact that this game gives you skill points that can be spent on self-refilling consumable attacks and buffs means I really should be using them. We'll see if my change in approach means I'll have better luck this attempt.

June 9, 2023 - Day 160 - NewPlay Bonus Review
Total NewPlays: 178Game: Remnant: From the Ashes
Platform: Steam
Release Date: Aug 20, 2019
Library Date: Jun 7, 2023
Unplayed: 2d (2d)
Playtime: 40mRemnant: From the Ashes is a third-person souls-like ARPG, & game #5 from the June Humble Choice bundle.
The game opens with an avatar designer; while not overly complex, it was enough to be able to create a female character & make her feel like "me".
You then find yourself in a boat for a cinematic intro, while a voiceover sets the scene; after a final shipwreck, you're washed up on a post-apocalyptic shore, with a palette of mostly dark muted colours, armed only with a sword.
So... souls-like.
There's an integrated training section of the game where you're introduced to the main bads, "the Root". Creepy AF spike-shooting black & red trees can spawn out of nowhere, or drop from platforms above you where they're ...rooted... in defiance of gravity, hanging there in exactly the way bricks don't.
Once you're rescued by the inhabitants of "Ward 13", you get a couple of guns (less souls-like), and start exploring this horrifying world in which you're part of the titular remnant of humanity.
The atmosphere is incredibly creepy, and I'll probably spend some more time killing evil trees.
