  1. It's thought that Amabie was an 'Amabiko' (アマビコ, 海彦, 尼彦, 天日子, 天彦, あま彦), a group of prophesying creatures that offered protection when their images were drawn and displayed.
There are 9 accounts of Amabiko sightings, all in Kyūshū (九州).

For some Amabie, with her power to repel disease, is considered more deity than yōkai.
In Western folktales creatures from the sea were often considered to have the gift of foresight.

  2. My first #Amabie article in 2020 focused on historical connections to the production of woodblock prints in #Edo #Japan, how the return of #Amabie during #covid19 gathered momentum from social media. I started working on it in May by first painting my ow interpretation of the #mermaid -like creature. My watercolour opens the article. 3. "Tamabie."– A recently discovered Unnamed Yokai discovered & authenticated [in 2020] by Hidetoshi Nagano, an official at Fukui Prefectural Archives who studies Amabie. – He reportedly appeared off shore of Bingo (East Hiroshima.) Feb of 1846 (only 2 months before the popular Amabie #アマビエ made their debut!) The "orbs" might related to be the tide jewels "Ebb & Flow" of ryugujo. given the name "tamabie" by yokai fans on twitter.
