My son and I caught the last day of the "Yōkai from Old Folk Tools" exhibition at the Japan Open-Air Folk House Museum in Kawasaki yesterday. The heat was punishing, but it was worth the effort.

Although tatarimokke are generally harmless (and more often than not treated with respect), depending on how the child died, the yōkai might well seek revenge or retribution🦉😨😱

Not all owls are what they seem.
There is a yōkai (妖怪) in Japan known as a 'tatarimokke' (祟り蛙 lit. 'cursed infant'). These 'owls' have been possessed by the spirit of a dead baby or young child, and will stay close to the family home.

Another possible origin of the Teru teru bōzu is the 'Hiyoribō' (日和坊), a yōkai that hails from Chiba prefecture.
Hiyoribō would bring sunny weather wherever he went and was most active in the summer months. During rain he disappeared, and thus people would pray for him to visit.

One of my favourite yōkai is a rather odd creature hailing from Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture.
Tankororin (タンコロリン) are persimmon, growing close to the trunk, that go unpicked for too long. They gradually become sentient, looking like a human head.

This tale of an unruly march of possessed items down Ichijō-dori gave birth to the idea of 'Hyakki Yagyō' (百鬼夜行 'Night Parade of One Hundred Demons'), a popular subject in art from Muromachi times.
As an idiom it is used to mean something akin to pandemonium.

The older items, fueled by anger and sorrow at their abandonment, became sentient (an obscure god called Henge Daimyōjin 変化大明神 is credited with their transformation).
For many nights they gathered in the neighbourhood of Ichijō-dori street, terrorizing the city folk.

The question of what happens to unwanted dolls is a very serious one in Japan.
Household items, should they reach the age of 100, may acquire a soul or spirit, and as they are human in shape, dolls are particularly susceptible to becoming 'tsukumogami' (付喪神).

Hasshaku-sama: The eight-foot lady youkai. Noted for her man hunger. She always gets her man. At least that was how the original story went. Later films and stories revealed she was not opposed to the diet of an occasional female.
