After gobbling up the chimaki, there's a certain way to fold up the leaves and twine (to make it easier for the host to clear away).

Nao-san shows how to 'throw away' last year's chimaki (茅巻き/ちまき).
Prior to the two parades each float accepts old chimaki. These will be purified and ritually burnt at Yasaka-jinja (八坂神社).

✨CHIMAKI CHARMS🙏
One of the most important tasks in July for many households and businesses in Kyōto is the refreshing of the 'chimaki' (茅巻き).
Sold exclusively during the Gion Matsuri, these broom-like charms hang by doorways to prevent misfortune entering the home or office. -
Chimaki (ちまき) is also the name of a sweet traditionally eaten on "Children's Day" (May 5th) for good health.
Steamed rice dumplings are tightly wrapped in a sheath of bamboo leaves, their finished shape much like the prongs of a chimaki amulet.

If you peek closely at each chimaki you will see a slip of paper with the words...
"Somin-shōrai shison nari"
蘇民将来子孫也Loosely translated the phrase means "I am a descendant of Somin Shōrai, so please protect me".
[this comes from the legend of Somin and the god Susanoo].

The decorations may be a little late going up, but that hasn't stopped us from tucking in to some of the seasonal delights on offer around 'Kodomo-no-hi'.
Irises, kashiwa mochi (柏餅), koinobori (鯉のぼり), and armor motifs all make an appearance in the tearoom right about now.
