Japan is marking Children's Day on Tuesday. About 1,000 carp-shaped streamers are on display near a Tokyo landmark to wish for the healthy growth of children.
Crowds flocked to Tokyo Skytree in Sumida Ward for the annual event. The colorful streamers fluttered in the wind at the foot of the 634-meter tower, setting up a perfect photo opportunity for families and tourists.

He looked out over the park and smiled as he watched the school #kids playing. It was one of the pleasures of being a retired god. Being human wasn’t so bad. The kids were milling around in the shade of the trees, enjoying their break from school.
“What are you thinking?” Nakona asked, following his gaze.
“I was wondering what it would have been like if we had ever been kids: playing in the shallows, catching crabs, teasing the girls.”
“You would have been like that one over there,” she said, pointing to a boy chasing the girls. He was using his hands like pincers, shouting, “Crabby, crab! Crabby, crab!” and laughing when the girls squealed.
As suddenly as the game had started, it stopped with the boy leaning against a tree, panting in the heat.
“Hey, Tamlo,” the retired crab god yelled to the juice vendor. “Give that boy a drink. I’ll pay.”
“No can do, sir. We'd be reported for showing undue interest in him.”
“Then, I’ll buy them all drinks, and you’d better give me a good bulk discount.”

This is one of a series, each unique, of my hand made cyanotypes on watercolour paper (14” x 11”) with an image of a cloud-filled sky overprinted with my linocut print of several kites, and wind-socks each collaged with beautiful Japanese washi papers.
The carp-shaped Koinobori wind socks (also known as satsuki-nobori) are flown in Japan to celebrate Tango no sekku, or Children’s Day each May 5.

Tango no Sekku is a traditional 🇯🇵 celebration held on May 5th, marking the change of seasons and celebrating the health and happiness of all children. Many festivals take place across Japan on this day.
In Kyoto, Saginomori Shrine celebrates this special occasion with a mikoshi procession (a parade of a portable Shinto shrine). The mikoshi is believed to house the spirit of the deity.
