  1. After 8 hours of work, my tomato beds are done - walkway trenches, raked, leveled, tomato seedlings transplanted, parsley, basil and marigold seedlings transplanted, straw applied, good soak applied.

I'm exhausted after all that, but my garden is well on the way to getting planted! Left are the bell peppers (and accompanying oregano), sweet potatoes, green beans, black beans, pumpkins, summer and winter squash. Those will come in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

  2. Apparently hardiness zone maps for Canada were updated last year for the 1st time in a decade by Natural Resources Canada. I checked our area and we went from a frosty #Zone5a to a tropical #Zone5b. Woo hoo! Gonna plant some bananas tomorrow.

Someone needs to tell #MotherNature about the update because we had record snowfall and cold weather this past winter...

  3. It is done. (intoned in a Matrix-Architect voice)

My backyard container herb/cucumber/tomato garden is fully planted. I just transplanted the basil, oregano, chives, parsley seedlings into the buckets. Only one more night of <50F and then we go straight into 80F/60F high/low weather.

  8. Anyone live in the Zone5 area (northern-central Midwest US) and grown sweet potatoes using the "black plastic method"? (create a ridge, cover it w/blk plastic, cut holes in top and plant slips through holes)

I ask because the seed company (Harris Seeds) says I should leave plastic in place till harvest.

Instructions say "central/southern locations should remove after a month"

W/Climate change, its getting warmer in Zone5! What do you think?

  9. Despite the lateness in getting started, the crazy cold, wet weather and my getting another 200 sq ft (~18 sq m) of space, things are sprouting and/or in progress!

Rows of carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes and amaranth have been planted.

This coming weekend/next week, the tomatoes and herb/flower seedlings will go in, assuming the weather outlook is < 50 F/10 C.

  14. The first sprouts of the season in my community garden (allotment) plot!

White and yellow onions from seed. A first attempt. They're poking their little sprouts up and out.

Next week, I'll be planting a row of parsnips between them. I'm experimenting with companion planting this year.

  19. Still with freezing overnight temps here in #NorthernIllinois, but the #perennials are doing well. Re-located and re-spaced the green onions (yes, perennial in my #Zone5b) today. Also found the second flower of the yard: a small bit of yellow on a Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea). The 2025-added Carex blanda sedges seem happy and are expanding. #NativePlants #gardening

  20. Joining in with the garlic harvesting crowd. Planted 18, got 16 back. Pretty happy with that for a second season try. Drying out a bit and then will clean up more. #gardening #GrowYourOwn #NorthernIllinois #Zone5b

  21. I sowed my green/wax beans on the 10th, and the black beans on the 11th. To my surprise, they're already up and growing!

So my amaranth will have black beans growing near them! Next week, I sow the squash seeds to finish the 3 Sisters and transplant the bell peppers; with that the garden will be set. Finally.

  22. Backyard/Garden update:

The tomatoes might make it! Finally showing some green, growth after a rocky 3 weeks of looking gray/green in the containers.

The peppers are hanging on, but I had to give them some yellow-fertilizer again; more yellow leaves. Considering some diluted weed tea as well, just to keep the nutrients coming.

Herb garden is rolling along. Cilantro and dill are very happy! The chives, not so much. No germination yet 😔

  23. Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum) in the foreground and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) in the back. #NativePlants #gardening #Zone5b

  24. Unlike last year, the ground is still frozen right now. No sign of the crocuses yet and only a few garlics. I'll go out and poke around this weekend, but a little longer rest for me it seems. #gardening #NorthernIllinois #Zone5b

  25. Working on closing up the vegetable portion of the #garden this weekend but will leave the peas up. Hopefully these tomatoes will keep ripening inside. #gardening #GrowYourOwn #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  26. I have trouble thinning in the spring and clearing in the fall. Even though nothing will come of it, the zucchini and yellow squashes still want to try. It's November. #gardening #ClimateChange #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  27. After our very warm February, I decided to go early (March 3) with some #peas, thinking I can still plant at the usual time if they don't come up. Many did germinate in March but they really only got going in April.

Experiment conclusion: "As soon as soil can be worked" is true but staying winter-lazy for a bit longer would have been fine. #gardening #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois #VegetableGardening

  28. Lots of perennials showing up with new growth now - coneflowers, bergamot, wild geraniums, goldenrod... and of course the stalwart hostas. #gardening #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  29. It's been an extremely warm winter in my neck of #Zone5b. The #crocuses and #tulips are about 2-3 weeks ahead of last year. The scarce snow from last night will be gone by tomorrow. #gardening

If you are in the US, please vote in the upcomings with #ClimateChange in mind.

  30. I just leave my green onions in over winter (under a leaf mulch). They survive and come back early spring. #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois #gardening

  31. Going back to the beginning, this is what 15 summers does. Besides the flora for pollinators and a room for our family, we've more than 20 kinds of birds who visit us. Caterpillars turned themselves into black swallowtail butterflies this year. Annual cicadas spend summers serenading us. Bats live in the maple tree. Grasshoppers love the shrubs. We sit eating strawberries off the plants with the sun on our faces. Best of all, our souls are happy. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling /fin

  32. One year a blustery March saw our 40-year-old fence fall to the ground. I can’t allow wood to be scrapped, so we built a “tree house” for the kids. They each picked a tree for it. One picked an Aspen, and the other picked a purple something or other that is actually a pretty bush. Maybe not this year since it’s been beaten to heck by hail at least a dozen times this year. Then the Japanese beetles moved in. I hate them. Most years, it’s gorgeous. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling 6/7

  33. It turns out trees grow more slowly than children, and we wanted to play outside. Husband and tools to the rescue. I gave him photos of English summer houses. On the last cut of the project, he came into the bathroom where I showering and calmly said, “I cut myself. Could you drive me to the ER?” He missed an artery by millimeters. Many stitches later, we had shade, and he learned never to use the radial arm saw without the guard in place. Ever.

  34. There was still far too much lawn, though, so when I was eight months pregnant with our second child, I decided we needed to rip out the random section of lawn off by itself and put in a border along the walkway. 🙄 The border has morphed into a strawberry bed (FYI: squirrels dislike tarragon so much they’ll leave strawberries alone), and that random bed was a raised veggie garden for a decade before the neighbor's tree grew up and shaded it. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling 4/7

  35. Then I read that Virginia Creeper berries could make a toddler sick. My husband was on travel, but that's never stopped me when an idea takes hold. Plus, I knew where we kept the Sawz-all. What I didn't know was that once I got the fence down, I'd find four windows into the neighbor's garage. Fortunately, my husband has more tools than Norm Abrams and thought building "shutters" and flower boxes would take care of things. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling 3/7

  36. So first things first. We needed a tree to shade the concrete patio eventually. We couldn't understand why the patio was literally as far away from the house as it could be and still be on our property. Turns out it was the pool deck for the in-ground swimming pool and spa circa 1977-1994. We found that out when we tried to plant the tree and kept hitting concrete and rebar. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling 2/7

  37. When we bought our home 15 summers ago, the backyard was basically lawn and Virginia Creeper. There wasn't bird song. Or pollinators. Just a lot of scorching Colorado (US) sun and Kentucky Bluegrass that wanted vast quantities of water in a state that historically doesn't have a lot of water. It wasn't a place where my melanin-challenged family could spend much time. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling 1/7

  38. It's gardening season in full swing here. Went and got all the plants we needed for hanging baskets and some we didn't need :)
Looks like it's going to be all gardening and no woodworking this weekend. But I am not complaining. I love helping LOML in garden chores.

  39. Hoping to get some advice from the #fruitgrowing people of Mastodon. In the Spring, I grafted a bunch of Apples and planted them in 5 gallon buckets. The plan was, once Fall hit, they would go dormant and I would move them to a nursery bed for winter before the ground froze.

These trees will not go dormant. They're still healthy and green looking like they were mid summer and the ground is about to freeze. Am I good to just transplant these while they're not dormant?
