  1. My wife has been harvesting this morning and will be preserving #Vegetables today. She makes her own pasta sauce from scratch so the tomatoes come in handy all winter.

  2. Our neighbour's Rose of Sharon is bursting out the colour this week. It's a great screening hedge on the property line, extending almost 40 feet on our east side. He and his wife only use their cottage on weekends so we agreed to keep it trimmed and fertilized because we get most of the benefit.

  3. We are still sorting out a disorganized garden in our new house which will take a few growing seasons to see what's still growing and what can be safely transplanted. A surprise this week - a large but sparse looking peony bush that is almost completely hidden under a mature Nootka Cypress tree. This bloom, over 5 inches across, was peaking out between the drooping evergreen branches. We'll move it somewhere more prominent in the fall.

  4. Last of the spring lettuce and radishes harvested from my little, fenced-in greens garden. Next up for this little area is a summer cover crop of buckwheat until August when I plant autumn spinach, lettuce and radishes.

  5. Come on, little tomatoes! Just a few more nights of lows in the 40s, you can do it!!

  6. After 8 hours of work, my tomato beds are done - walkway trenches, raked, leveled, tomato seedlings transplanted, parsley, basil and marigold seedlings transplanted, straw applied, good soak applied.

I'm exhausted after all that, but my garden is well on the way to getting planted! Left are the bell peppers (and accompanying oregano), sweet potatoes, green beans, black beans, pumpkins, summer and winter squash. Those will come in the next 2 to 3 weeks.

  7. Apparently hardiness zone maps for Canada were updated last year for the 1st time in a decade by Natural Resources Canada. I checked our area and we went from a frosty #Zone5a to a tropical #Zone5b. Woo hoo! Gonna plant some bananas tomorrow.

Someone needs to tell #MotherNature about the update because we had record snowfall and cold weather this past winter...

  8. It is done. (intoned in a Matrix-Architect voice)

My backyard container herb/cucumber/tomato garden is fully planted. I just transplanted the basil, oregano, chives, parsley seedlings into the buckets. Only one more night of <50F and then we go straight into 80F/60F high/low weather.

  9. Anyone live in the Zone5 area (northern-central Midwest US) and grown sweet potatoes using the "black plastic method"? (create a ridge, cover it w/blk plastic, cut holes in top and plant slips through holes)

I ask because the seed company (Harris Seeds) says I should leave plastic in place till harvest.

Instructions say "central/southern locations should remove after a month"

W/Climate change, its getting warmer in Zone5! What do you think?

  10. Despite the lateness in getting started, the crazy cold, wet weather and my getting another 200 sq ft (~18 sq m) of space, things are sprouting and/or in progress!

Rows of carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes and amaranth have been planted.

This coming weekend/next week, the tomatoes and herb/flower seedlings will go in, assuming the weather outlook is < 50 F/10 C.

  11. The first sprouts of the season in my community garden (allotment) plot!

White and yellow onions from seed. A first attempt. They're poking their little sprouts up and out.

Next week, I'll be planting a row of parsnips between them. I'm experimenting with companion planting this year.

  12. Still with freezing overnight temps here in #NorthernIllinois, but the #perennials are doing well. Re-located and re-spaced the green onions (yes, perennial in my #Zone5b) today. Also found the second flower of the yard: a small bit of yellow on a Golden Alexander (Zizia aurea). The 2025-added Carex blanda sedges seem happy and are expanding. #NativePlants #gardening

  13. Joining in with the garlic harvesting crowd. Planted 18, got 16 back. Pretty happy with that for a second season try. Drying out a bit and then will clean up more. #gardening #GrowYourOwn #NorthernIllinois #Zone5b

  14. I sowed my green/wax beans on the 10th, and the black beans on the 11th. To my surprise, they're already up and growing!

So my amaranth will have black beans growing near them! Next week, I sow the squash seeds to finish the 3 Sisters and transplant the bell peppers; with that the garden will be set. Finally.

  15. Backyard/Garden update:

The tomatoes might make it! Finally showing some green, growth after a rocky 3 weeks of looking gray/green in the containers.

The peppers are hanging on, but I had to give them some yellow-fertilizer again; more yellow leaves. Considering some diluted weed tea as well, just to keep the nutrients coming.

Herb garden is rolling along. Cilantro and dill are very happy! The chives, not so much. No germination yet 😔

  16. Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum) in the foreground and wild bergamot (Monarda fistulosa) in the back. #NativePlants #gardening #Zone5b

  17. Unlike last year, the ground is still frozen right now. No sign of the crocuses yet and only a few garlics. I'll go out and poke around this weekend, but a little longer rest for me it seems. #gardening #NorthernIllinois #Zone5b

  18. Working on closing up the vegetable portion of the #garden this weekend but will leave the peas up. Hopefully these tomatoes will keep ripening inside. #gardening #GrowYourOwn #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  19. I have trouble thinning in the spring and clearing in the fall. Even though nothing will come of it, the zucchini and yellow squashes still want to try. It's November. #gardening #ClimateChange #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  20. After our very warm February, I decided to go early (March 3) with some #peas, thinking I can still plant at the usual time if they don't come up. Many did germinate in March but they really only got going in April.

Experiment conclusion: "As soon as soil can be worked" is true but staying winter-lazy for a bit longer would have been fine. #gardening #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois #VegetableGardening

  21. Lots of perennials showing up with new growth now - coneflowers, bergamot, wild geraniums, goldenrod... and of course the stalwart hostas. #gardening #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois

  22. It's been an extremely warm winter in my neck of #Zone5b. The #crocuses and #tulips are about 2-3 weeks ahead of last year. The scarce snow from last night will be gone by tomorrow. #gardening

If you are in the US, please vote in the upcomings with #ClimateChange in mind.

  23. I just leave my green onions in over winter (under a leaf mulch). They survive and come back early spring. #Zone5b #NorthernIllinois #gardening

  24. Going back to the beginning, this is what 15 summers does. Besides the flora for pollinators and a room for our family, we've more than 20 kinds of birds who visit us. Caterpillars turned themselves into black swallowtail butterflies this year. Annual cicadas spend summers serenading us. Bats live in the maple tree. Grasshoppers love the shrubs. We sit eating strawberries off the plants with the sun on our faces. Best of all, our souls are happy. #Gardening #Zone5b #Denver #BloomScrolling /fin
