#Medieval European Vegetables
"Mixed vegetables
Most of the vegetables of the medieval European era are still popular today. For some this is a surprising fact as people tend to think that everyday life and diet in the 11th-15th century was vastly different to what we know. After all, we are talking about what was commonly grown betweeen 600 and 900 years ago!
Vegetable growing in medieval Europe included the following which are still popular today:
#BroadBean
#cabbage
#calabash
#horseradish
#leeks
#onions
#peas
#turnip
#squash
#spinachOf these the most common medieval vegetables were cabbage and leeks. Easy to grow, easy to cook they were used extensively to make the staple food of the medieval diet – #pottage. A tasty and nourishing hot dish, you can sit and imagine you are in 12th century England as you eat it!
A 12th century garden did also contain other vegetables which you might never have heard of because they have sadly been long forgotten.
Why would that be? Well, one of the reasons is the introduction into Europe of the humble potato in the 16th century. People loved it so much in Europe that they started to grow it in favour of other vegetables.
Here are two of what I call the ‘forgotten’ medieval veggies:
The ingredients used to make a medieval salad were somewhat different to what you would expect to use today. Tomatoes would not have been on the list – like the potato, the tomato was native to South America and brought back to Europe by Spanish explorers and traders in the 16th century. Here are some of the ingredients people used to make a salad:
- green leaves – spinach, #dandelion, #DockLeaves (the last two are regarded more as weeds today!)
- aromatic #herbs – mint, chives, parsley,
- petals of flowers – rose, violet, primrose, marigold
- fruit – #WildStrawberries, apples (chopped)Visit the salad recipes page here for more information and ideas. It would not be so surprising if this kind of colourful, aromatic dish came back into fashion one day! "

Even though you can sew peas directly into the ground I like to start them in pots, just as I do with just about everything. We get a lot of Spring rain and they are easier to protect from slugs and snails in little seed pots.
The other thing that likes to eat pea shoots around here are house sparrows! Just as you might get pea shoots as a garnish at a posh restaurant, sparrows love these tender greens, too. I cover them with a little tent of chicken wire when I first plant them out.

Peas! One of the earliest seeds I like to start in Spring. They are cold-tolerant and love a cooler climate, more than their cousins, the beans. Get them going too late in the season and they might just crash out early from the heat once it warms up.
Like all legumes, peas are nitrogen fixers - they draw nitrogen out of the nitrogen gas in the air and store it in their roots in little nodes. This enriches the soil and reduces the amount you need to 'feed' these plants.
Garden peas are great but I love sugar snaps because you can eat more of the plant (the pod as well as the peas) and they are tasty fresh right off the vine.

Some of my rare Magnolia Blossom sugar snap pea seeds. They're different than my other snap pea seeds. I got these from #SaltspringSeeds & they've been tested & do extremely well in PNW area. I only support local, small seed businesses & don't buy much seeds anymore. I trade seeds with others & use local free seed libraries more than buying.

Another day of rain showers. Managed to do a lot of weeding and pick some stuff from the garden.
Lots of beans hiding in there, plenty of peas and the three cucumber plants are producing enough cucumbers to eat every day.
Must remember not to put cucumbers next to beans. Too dense jungle makes harvesting difficult.
-
Got some time to look at the garden.
Sunflowers are now taller than me and starting to grow flower heads.
Everything is quite weedy as nobody had time to deal with it, between the excessive rain and the renovation and the everything else.
Loads of garlic will be ready soon and potatoes are indicating its time to build that potato digger.
Pumpkins are conquering large areas but still not flowering.
Peas are under pressure but producing well anyways.
Beans and cucumbers are having a party and we've had enough to eat and give some away.
Second batch of radishes, meh. They just don't love it there.
Still some beetroots in the soil, which are huge by now. A few are going to flower for next years seeds.

I've picked the first crop of #Asparagus #Peas to use in a #vegetarian stir fry later. I'll be interested to see if they really do taste like asparagus when cooked. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I haven't let them grow too big & they'll be stringy, there's only one way to find out.
-
Picked a pail of peas. 2 cups for stir fry, 3 cups shelled, and a full pail of pea shells were the results.

The Kentucky Blue pole beans are mostly up after 1 or 2 replanting, the melon bed and the pea bed are a bit flowery.

Peas got tied up.
This took forever because I was scanning the garden for enough small sticks to tie the string to and then poke into the ground.
These peas are doing well so far.
The beans mostly too, two of them died but those were the "meh" seedlings that I just planted because there was space.

Peas are in and I rigged some supports from the stick collection. These are all from various trees and shrubs I had to remove, except the long straight spruce top pieces which I found in the barn.
