Fun find in the field--I saw a flock of Pinyon Jays moving through a burned Joshua tree woodland. I watched one hammering a seed, so after it left I went to investigate and found these pieces of (toasted) Mojave yucca seeds.

The fire is 80,437 acres and 23% contained. In the evening there was increased activity which could happen again due to winds from monsoonal weather behavior. Fire is backing down Crescent peak away from the NV border.

California's biggest wildfire so far this year is in the Mojave. That's an area which used to only see fire very rarely; spacing between plants meant that you'd see lightning light one on fire, but it wouldn't spread.
Introduced gasses and mustard have changed that, as they now provide fuel between the larger plants, allowing fires to spread in places where they historically wouldn't. Add hot dry winds and you get #wildfires

The #YorkFire has apparently spread from the #MojaveNationalPreserve in #California to the #AviKwaAme National Monument in #Nevada and sits at 0% containment. These desert ecosystems are not fire-adapted and these continuing #wildfire events could have significant impacts on #Joshuatrees and Bendire's Thrashers.

The 70,000-acre #YorkFire wildfire that started in California’s Mojave National Preserve before sweeping across the border into Nevada remained 0% contained Sunday night as firefighters faced dangerous “fire whirls” — a product of intense heat and turbulent winds, officials said.
Firefighters struggled Sunday to slow the blaze, which was rampaging across a Mojave Desert landscape that is a vast, delicate and vital ecosystem rich in wildlife — tortoises, foxes, badgers, bobcats, bighorn sheep — and Joshua trees, and the animals and plants are vulnerable to wildfires.

California’s biggest wildfire of the year — burning through delicate #Joshua #Tree forests along the California-Nevada border — is an unusual desert blaze being fueled in part by the rapid growth of underbrush from this winter’s record rains.
The #YorkFire had scorched 77,000 acres as of Monday, with no containment. After first being observed Friday, the blaze has spread mainly across the #Mojave National Preserve in eastern San Bernardino County, but recently jumped into western Nevada. No evacuations have been issued as a result of the fire, which is burning in mostly remote areas.

It appears the wind-driven York Fire in the Mojave National Preserve is about 20 miles east of the site of the catastrophic 2020 Dome Fire.
Cause is undetermined.
The footprint has more than doubled in size since 7am; now estimated at 70,000 acres, over 25,000 acres more than the Dome Fire, which took 10 days to contain.
