Counting cones near Virginia City in August! Here, volunteers are surveying for ripe (green) pinyon pine cones. Mapping these cones helps track this vital Pinyon Jay food source- a key piece of the conservation puzzle. #PinyonJay #ConservationInAction #CommunityScience #GBBO

Pinyon Jay fledgling begging in the Sheep Range north of Las Vegas. Note the pale-yellow inner edge of bill (the gape), and the overall gray color. #PinyonJay #Nevada #birds

#PinyonJay colonies vary in structure and spacing. In a typical colony, there's only 1 nest per tree, with 30-50ish nests, overall. During the 2024-2025 Arizona surveys, fewer nests were clustered together but instead were scattered throughout the home range. #ArizonaPinyonJays #birds

After the snow and subsequent muddy roads, our #Nevada #PinyonJay surveyors journeyed south for their second tour to spend time in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge to explore the Sheep Range. They found themselves traveling through Joshua tree forest, transitioning to pinyon-juniper habitat.

We’re celebrating another successful #PinyonJay #monitoring season! In 2025, we hiked & surveyed northern #Arizona, across #Nevada, and throughout #NewMexico's national forests. Our surveyors recorded sightings and behavior, and in NV and AZ also surveyed colony sites and documented nests.

'Tis the season for #hiring! We have two #PinyonJay #job posts up and running - do you want to make a real difference in conservation? Love hiking and camping in beautiful and often rugged country? Excited to learn more about bird behavior and ecology? Check out our work in #AZ and #NV!

Diane Wong-Kone, of Lahontan Audubon Society, led a #Jaywalk earlier this week here in the #Reno area, but other Audubon Societies are also heavily involved. #PinyonJay #AudubonSociety

Local Audubon Societies have been crucial to the success of this Pinyon Jay #CommunityScience project, many of whom have developed their own #PinyonJay programs!
-
Partners are also critical in building this #PinyonJay #CommunityScience program. Thanks to the many awesome people and groups who are collecting location and behavior data for this program!

Because of Pinyon Jays’ large home ranges and colonial behavior, targeted methods of bird surveys are required to answer a lot of questions critical to their #conservation

As one example, #NevadaBirdCount data formed the basis of #PinyonJay modeled use of landscapes. Pinyon Jays are declining across their range, and are currently undergoing a status review under the #EndangeredSpecies Act.

Join GBBO in the beautiful Bodie Hills of the Eastern Sierra Nevada next week, June 13-16, for a bioblitz to learn about Pinyon Juniper ecosystems! These forests are the dominant forest type in the western United States, and home to many iconic and sensitive wildlife species. We have a full schedule for the weekend, winding down on Sunday. Come for 1 day or for the whole time!

Fun find in the field--I saw a flock of Pinyon Jays moving through a burned Joshua tree woodland. I watched one hammering a seed, so after it left I went to investigate and found these pieces of (toasted) Mojave yucca seeds.

Training for Pinyon Jay surveys in the Sheep Range! We had great looks at a flock of 60+ jays. Rugged terrain, pinyon-juniper/Joshua Tree transition zones, and surprise snow! The inaugural year of our state-wide Nevada Pinyon Jay monitoring project is off to a great start.

Alan de Queiroz recently wrote about his adventures with Pinyon Jays - including collecting data for Pinyon Jay Community Science Project!
Here's the link to Alan's article - and watch this space for more #PinyonJay information, including how to get involved where you are - even outside of Nevada!

The jays may offer the best hope for resilience for piñon-juniper forests. They’re “the only species that is capable of moving a woodland uphill if there’s been a fire,” Johnson says, “or replanting an area that’s been burned or decimated by insects or drought,” by ferrying seeds away from the degraded area.

She recently created a model based on previous fieldwork to predict #nesting #habitat across #NewMexico, and found jays tend to place their nests in larger trees in areas with dense canopy cover and low levels of recent disturbance. Her analysis found the highest quality habitat was “surprisingly scarce.”
