  1. Seeking wisdom from anyone familiar with bird banding and experience with reporting a bird band number… more specifically, I would like to know if it’s possible to report a partial number?

The backstory: I've been observing a family of Swainson’s hawks in our neighbourhood for the last 9 years. A new male replaced the patriarch in 2023. He is banded.

Despite my best photographing efforts, I have only confirmed the last 5 digits of the number, plus one other digit for sure (but unsure of its position). He will surely be leaving soon on his epic migration to Argentina.

I would love to know his story. Am I out of luck?

  6. Waterbird Colour Marking - seen a duck or a goose with a colour ring in Ireland and the UK? You can now look it up on this great website

  7. A young Painted Bunting was a nice surprise this weekend at Bluebonnet Swamp. Females and young birds aren’t as flashy as adult males, but their brilliant green plumage is beautiful!

All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the US Geological Survey.

  8. OK so the goose roundup was way too fun. We were able to get 41 in total. Roughly 50/50 split on already banded vs ones we banded. And two cute fluff balls, too. My @effinbirds shirt was quite popular. A+ experience. Would do again.

  9. Target netting in my yard, I captured a very skulky new yard bird...a Kentucky Warbler!

All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the US Geological Survey.

  10. Measuring the tarsus of an adult male Hooded Warbler on his way through #BatonRouge on spring migration. All banding is being conducted under state and federal permits.

  11. This past weekend, another great day bird banding in #BatonRouge with Louisiana Bird Observatory. Migrants are starting to trickle in.

All banding is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey’s Bird Banding Lab.

  12. Last week, I got to meet some baby kestrels! They were getting banded and weighed. I got to hold one (the biggest one, it was a true unit).

Something I didn't know about banding baby birds: you can't band them right after they hatch, not because their legs are too small, but because their legs are too big! They store fat in their legs, and their legs get skinnier as they grow.

  13. It won't make for any flashy headlines, but I love this kind of paper, summarizing historical nature observations from museum collections. Florence Henderson (no relation to Mrs. Brady, apparently) was a biology teacher in the Central Valley of California in the 1920s and 30s, and banded birds with her students.

One of many interesting things about her records: No starlings. They hadn't made it to the Central Valley yet.
