  1. @ai6yr Scientific article.
    Explainer for rapid growth of 2018 Camp Fire in northern California. No paywall.

    10km =~ 6.2 miles!!!!

    "Abstract Extreme fire spread during the 2018 Camp Fire in northern California was driven by organized long‐range spotting tightly coupled to plume dynamics. Doppler radar and satellite observations reveal distinct regions of ember lofting and downwind fallout within the convective column, forming direct pathways for firebrand transport several (up to 10) kilometers ahead of the main fire front. These firebrands ignited dense clusters of new fires that merged into rapidly advancing lobes, producing abrupt surges in fire growth that exceeded expectations based on surface wind and fuel conditions alone."

  4. In Lake County, the just-ignited #SkyFire up in Lake County is spreading rapidly in dense brush amid hot and dry conditions. It's not immediately threatening communities at the moment, but has substantial potential to "go big" under current and predicted conditions. #CAwx #CAfire

  17. There is now some MODIS/VIIRS heat detection data for the #MountainFire, Ventura County, CA. However, the fire is moving fast and the fire front has moved *much* further SW'ly than that satellite data.

    So right now there is no reason to post a MODIS/VIIRS map and doing so might mislead people as to the fire's location and danger people in that area might be in.

  18. Daniel Swain: "#BridgeFire has reached western portion of #Wrightwood. Radar imagery is unfortunately suggestive of a high-intensity fire as the fire moves into town (persistent high reflectivity). 20. Very serious wildfire situation unfolding in mountains of Southern California at this hour. Most emergent situation is in/near #Wrightwood, toward which #BridgeFire has made a massive run this PM and is now imminently threatening town. Leave now; evacs ordered! #CAfire #CAwx [1/4]

  21. Some good news about #ParkFire: w/much more favorable weather conditions this week, it appears that activity even on the stubborn NE flank has decreased greatly. While there are still hotspots, there's an increasing likelihood of minimal further growth.#CAwx #CAfire [1/3]

    Symbols you see when the map opens are heat detection by the MODIS and VIIRS satellites. This data is not real time and locations are only approximate. Sometimes this data can be 'false positive'. For more info, see 2 links upper left corner of the map.

    Never rely on any map or anything else you see online to ignore an order to evacuate. The fire officials have information that you do not.

  26. #BasinFire is expanding on 2 sides. This is in the Sierra National Forest east of Fresno, CA.

    I checked the NIFC server but there is no data for any infrared flight last night. Therefore at the time of my post the perimeter shown is from around mid-day yesterday.

    The #FlashFire and #BoltFire will likely merge.

    The #BasinFire is burning along the Kings River in Sierra National Forest. This fire was mapped at 2,636 acres as of 10:30pm yesterday.

  30. CW: Wildfire?

    Huh. Driving slow bc traffuck sb on I5 into Sacramento, looking west towards the Bay just south of the curve in the road after the airport, and saw this.

    Not the right placement for the fire near Tracy I dont think, so I think uh. New start? Doesn't look right for a building fire. Have seen at least three fire vehicles go howling up NB. #fire #wildfire #cawildfire #cafire @ai6yr (location when pic taken approx just after I5 & 99 join thru Sacramento.)

  31. The #LosPadres NF website crashed on me and isn't coming back up, so I had to go to their social media to confirm that Yes, they are planning 3 prescribed burns today near Wheeler Gorge, Figueroa Mountain, and Memorial Park

    Assuming they're actually successful at getting anything to burn, smoke will likely be visible from Ojai and surrounding #VenturaCounty regions.
