  1. Eastern California Road Trip

Lately, I've been getting interested in using a van as a base camp for wildlife photography. I've done some backpacking photography, and while it's a lot of fun, the limitations of dragging all of your gear with you requires some real compromises. Not to mention, some of my favorite places to do photography are very windy, which makes for some sleepless nights. I decided to rent a Sprinter van from Moterra Campervans, drive out to some of my favorite places, and try a couple of new places. […]

  3. Desert Owl

I didn't know there were Burrowing Owls in the Mojave. I was hiking through a yucca and cholla patch when a light-colored owl took flight ahead ahead of me. My best guess was a Barn Owl, but it was the middle of the morning. As soon as it alighted, I could tell from that sassy stance that I was dealing with a Burrowing Owl. They're much lighter-colored than the ones I'm used to on the coast. The owl briefly considered me before flying off. I was in a remote enough area that I may well have […]

  4. Mojave Scene

In the heart of the Mojave National Preserve, a Cactus Wren perches on a prickly pear cactus. This spot has been my white whale photographically. The butte in the background is in a lush valley filled with yucca, cholla, and prickpear cactus. Unfortunately I have not been able to convince a single bird to pop its head out for a photo in that spot. Here on the other side of the valley, the birds are more plentiful and confiding. While it isn't quite as lush, I was pleased to be able to line […]

  5. There's not been some real content here for a while, so I asked my everything map for just the January ones and picked this for a #throwbackThursday post. Seems I've generally been on the coast or Arizona for the first month.

Table Top may have been the most mundane of my Mojave National Preserve hikes, but also the most approachable of the off trail adventures there. Just a bit of across and a bit of up, a wander around the edge of the tall mesa for the view, then back the same way.

  6. I missed this. No update since Friday, but apparently they closed ALL roads into the Mojave National Preserve on Friday -- unclear what the status is this morning.
