  1. We’re definitely in the swing of summer street party season! We got the inaugural Live on Lydia St party. Last Shop On Earth’s alternative fashion market. Twas Now Brewery’s 3rd birthday tap takeover at TWB. And the 4th annual Betzner St Bash! Give yourselves a huge pat on the back for creating community and making space for neighbours to make a new friend or two☀️ What a day 😮‍💨 #kitchener #WatReg #WrPoli

  2. An adventurous minority are willing to bike and walk on dangerous roads. But if we’re serious about providing transportation choice, we need a safe, connected, accessible network of trails. youtube.com/shorts/x7dezOJocYU #Kitchener #WatReg #WRPoli

  3. Join me and the campaign team for our second community conversation! This time we’ll focus on parks, including the discrepancy between park availability and the amount of parkland fees collected for new development in each area of the city.

    Come drop in, enjoy some light refreshments, and meet a new neighbour or two. It’ll be fun! #kitchener #wrpoli #watreg

  4. RE: mastodon.sdf.org/@bobjonkman/1

    I'm sad we're losing Royce and Jen, two of my favourite people on council. Scott Piatkowski running is interesting.

  5. One month to the close of nominations for the municipal elections. I don't know what bothers me most:
    -Incumbents who have not yet declared if they're running or not;
    -All the ridings with no candidates;
    -All the ridings with only the incumbent;
    -Candidates who registered on 1 May whose websites still say "Coming Soon!";
    -Incumbents with no online presence;
    -Incumbents with websites not updated since 2022…

  6. Thanks to everyone who came out to our Community Conversation on housing last week. It was a great chance to have some more in-depth discussions and connect the dots between affordability, liveable neighbourhoods, and sustainable development.

  7. Do you forage in the city? Would you like to see more edible plants in parks, along city streets, and in public flowerbeds? #eatlocal #foraging #urbanharvest #kitchener #wrpoli m.youtube.com/shorts/qcFjI5NLp

  8. Lots of updates to #WaterlooRegion's municipal candidate info!

    poliblog.jonkman.ca/Poliblog-E

    It's just over two months into the campaign with less than two months to the close of candidate registrations (21 August). I'm a bit alarmed at how many positions still have no candidates, and the many incumbents who have not declared whether they're running, not running, or still thinking it over. It's a big disservice to others who might consider running if they knew the incumbent isn't.

  9. Join us for a casual drop-in discussion. Meet new neighbours and speak directly with me about the issues that are important to you!

    Time: 6-8pm, Wednesday July 15

    Location: 55 Duke Street West, Kitchener

    Focus topic: housing (but we can chat about other things too)

    RSVP at samnabi.ca 😁

  10. We deserve housing choice in every neighbourhood. People should be able to stay rooted in community at every stage of life. On Monday, June 29, Kitchener Council discusses our new official plan. I urge all councillors to accept the staff recommendation and permit up to 6 storeys in all neighbourhoods outside of CHLs. #Kitchener #WatReg #yimby #WRPoli

  11. 59 years of Kitchener-Waterloo Multicultural Festival! The weather held off last weekend and it was so wonderful to connect with neighbours and indulge in some terrific food. (I started with a delicious single-origin Colombian coffee from a family farm.)

    I want to give a big shout out to Community Healthcaring, Climate Save, CKMS Radio Waterloo, the Ontario Summer Games, and the Waterloo Region Suicide Prevention Council!

  12. Last week in the community:

    - Celebrating incredible community leaders at the Muslim Social Services Gala

    - Soaking in the sounds of Open Ears festival as percussion ensembles Taktus Duo and TorQ guided us on an hour-long meditative escape

    - We had perfect weather to cheer on drag performers, run into friends, and celebrate 30 years of tri-Pride

    - Getting a kick out of this little free toy library on Fairview Ave.

  13. Taking a step back to appreciate the big picture. As a member of the Kitchener 2051 community working group, I helped inform the city's upcoming Official Plan that will help us grow to 450,000 people in an inclusive and sustainable way. Every neighbourhood in Kitchener should have housing options for all stages of life, as well as services and jobs close by. Let's get it right and continue to protect our countryside. #Kitchener #WatReg #WRPoli

  14. A dreamy morning in Central Frederick for the community garage sale! It was a great opportunity to meet neighbours and give a new home to gently used items. I snagged myself a hammock :) I also had some great conversations about protections for tenants that are being squeezed by the housing market. And finished by dipping in to Crushed Almond for a coffee. Delicious 😋#Kitchener #WRPoli

  15. Last week in the community:

    - celebrating the premiere of Sara Geidlinger’s documentary about The Circle of Music, an intergenerational choir pairing high school students and seniors with dementia

    - learning how to unlearn at a Sanguen harm reduction workshop organized by King East Neighbourhood Association

    - listening in at a Civic Punks meetup, discussing big questions around governance and public services with insights from around the globe

  16. Hi FediPoliFolks! As there will be another municipal election in Ontario I've begun to gather candidate info for my local municipalities. Since I'm no longer on those commercial socialmedias, feel free to share in all the places where I'm not. And do let me know of corrections, omissions, or updates!

  17. "Numerous studies have shown that not taking appropriate action is more expensive than investing in housing when you consider the costs associated with increased health care, incarceration, emergency shelters as well as femicides and familicides." #Housing #WRpoli doreenn.substack.com/p/ogp-mpp

  18. I love Jane. I'm struggling to read for pleasure these days, but I did at least pick this up...

    I'd rather she was on council, but if it means we get cutting murder mysteries about council, I can live with that.

  19. @uxmark

    Héline Chow has a website!

    And there's lots of other updates: New Bluesky and Threads accounts for old candidates (not sure if they just got them, or if I only just found them); new candidates; and candidates newly registered with Elections Canada.

    No independents or small-party candidates, tho. I believe democracy is always better served if there is a wide spectrum to vote for, even if our electoral system squelches those choices.

  20. I'm keeping track of candidates in Waterloo Region and adding their contact and social media info as I find it. CBC is one of my sources.

    If someone needs a #PoliSci research project, see which parties have the best communications channels, and correlate that with their political leanings...

  21. @reece

    Every once in a while the politicians for #WaterlooRegion make the right decisions. But that's diminished by hedging their bets (f'rinstance: Approve the LRT, but then delay bringing it to Cambridge by years, soon to be a decade).

    And it's not helped by a right-wing shift in the election of muncipal politicians, who aren't going to make bold, progressive decisions in the first place.

  22. Thursday was the last day for registering as a candidate in Ontario provincial election, so the list of candidates is now complete. Waterloo Region got two more Ontario Party candidates, a Libertarian candidate in Waterloo, and an independent in Kitchener Centre.

    The list of candidates is still missing plenty of contact and social media info, so let me know if you have updates.

  23. @samnabi

    Thanx! I'll fix that ASAP.

    Rob Deutschmann was one of the first candidates with contact info, I expect that things changed quickly in the first days of the campaign.

    I'll also review contact data for other candidates, they may have updated too.

  25. I've started a list of Ontario provincial election candidates in Waterloo Region. This is likely to be updated frequently until nominations close at 2pm on 13 February 2025.

    Let me know if there's new info, errors, or other changes.

  26. Congratulations to new MPP Aislinn Clancy! That's quite the green riding you have there!

  27. $SPOUSE points out that by acknowledging the other fourteen candidates, people might wonder why their vote for them doesn't count, and might spur on calls for #ProportionalRepresentation.

    And that, in turn, would probably result in having some of those fourteen candidates and parties elected in the future. Which would upset the establishment. So the establishment chooses to deny them and all voters the right to an informed choice at the polls.

  28. Yes, it would take a long time to get all the questions and answers from eighteen candidates. Yes, it would be unwieldy to have all eighteen candidates on camera. Yes, it would be expensive to rent a venue to accommodate all eighteen candidates.

    But democracy has never been quick, easy, or cheap.

    #KitCen #KitCentre #Kitchener #WRpoli #ONpoli

  29. I'm annoyed, as always, that the debate host said "There are four candidates in the race..."

    There are *eighteen* candidates in the race! This is where democracy dies, when the media does not respect the electoral process and does not invite all candidates to an "All-Candidate Debate".
