  1. It wasn't mentioned in the report above, but tree cover in cities in the US tends to echo class/race division lines. The higher the income, the more tree cover.

They said that Austin had about 41% tree cover, but it was not evenly distributed. There is more on the west side of Austin.

  3. "East Portland neighborhoods with fewer trees are the focus of Portland's effort to plant and give away 10,000 trees each year to increase shade"

Giving away trees is good, but they need to be the right species for the right location and people need to be educated on how best to plant and maintain them. I hope Portland is doing that well.

  5. Thanks to everyone who came out to our Community Conversation on housing last week. It was a great chance to have some more in-depth discussions and connect the dots between affordability, liveable neighbourhoods, and sustainable development.

  9. The good ol' days when it was front page news that the city had created a City Forester position. And that it was going to allot resources to take care of the trees it planted, etc. etc.

  11. Balancing protection and risk: Understanding the dual impact of trees on low-rise buildings during extreme wind events

"This study investigates the dual role of trees in either mitigating or exacerbating wind-induced damage to low-rise buildings during extreme wind events. Trees can act as natural windbreaks that reduce wind loads, but they also pose significant risks when uprooted or broken."

    #UK - Garden For #Wildlife

"Gardening for wildlife is probably the easiest way to garden, and is possibly the best thing that you can do for animals. It’s also something that we can all do in our gardens, and if you have one, in our allotments too.

"There’s nothing that beats the sound of #BirdSong, the spectacle of #butterflies and #bees, and the thrill of meeting squirrels and hedgehogs. Between us, we have over a million acres of gardens; these are a rich mixture of #habitats that add up to the largest nature reserve in the country.

"If you can think of your garden as a sunny glade, set amongst the trees of an #UrbanForest, that’s filled with fruits and flowers; with a little encouragement, wildlife will come."

  19. Kelowna shade trees cut down to make way for bike lanes

The report never once asks if there's a way to have cycle lanes AND have mature trees. There is, if you want to close that block off to cars and thus not have to widen the road to get a cycle lane in there that preserves driver space.

The report's comments are turned off.

  23. Right species for the right place is always key. And planting not just for the size of the immature tree, but the size and girth of the mature one.

I feel like if there were more interdisciplinary work between plant physiologists who specialize in tree roots, horticulturalists/arborists, and those who design streets/sidewalks/sewers, we could come up with a gallery design for sidewalks that allowed room to account for mature root size. Knowing how & where to irrigate also matters. #UrbanForest

  25. Neighbors lament N.J. town's decision to cut down towering -- and ancient -- trees

There *are* solutions, but places dominated by pennywise and pound-foolish thinking tend not to want to invest in them.

The sidewalks need to be smooth for disabled folks & others. If all the homeowners there would be willing to cede some front lawn, the sidewalk could be widened & remade. Or they could ban cars and pedestrianize the street.

  27. Just saw an urban tree PhD project. None of the requirements includes experience with urban trees nor horticulture.

    *sad trombone*

This seems to be because they are trying to automate things and make it possible for people less skilled in horticulture to be the decisionmakers and do it all remotely.

  29. #BathME + #Online - #ClimateConversations: Protecting Bath's #UrbanForest From the Impacts of #EmeraldAshBorer

"Bath's stately ash trees are an important part of our urban forest, but they are under dire threat. The emerald ash borer, an exotic pest that rapidly kills native ash trees, has reached Bath after ravaging forests across the northeast. Members of the Bath Community Forestry Committee will explain the biology of emerald ash borer and how they lead to tree mortality, treatment options, and resources the city is employing to protect ash trees. Participants will also learn how the Maine Forest Service is combating the emerald ash borer with the help of predator insects.

Bath Climate Conversations is a continuing series focused on learning, discussing, and connecting around ways to sustain and support our vibrant town as climate change occurs. Hosted by Bath #ClimateAction Commission in partnership with #KennebecEstuaryLandTrust and the #PattenFreeLibrary and presented in person and/or on Zoom. Registration is required for Zoom only."

  31. While this style of horticulture may be thought of as classically USian, I've actually seen it in Europe as well.

It's something that needs to change not just for aesthetic reasons, but for water reasons, for urban heat island reasons, and for environmental reasons... #Horticulture #UrbanForest
