  1. CW: WriterMagic 10. what kind of character conflicts define your work?

On survey, I love a good "struggling to understand" each other. The clash, but also resolution, of different values, ways of looking at the world, wants and needs. I think I'm not really interested in stories that characterize one character as "right" and the other as "wrong" and the "defeat" of one or the other.

  2. #WriterMagic 15 what are your writing weaknesses?

I don't like any action scenes, be it hand-to-hand combat, a battle, or even a sex scene (no surprise, they got their own stunt coordinator in #filmmaking, called #IntimacyCoordinator). I have no idea to make this bustle interesting while also making it relevant to the plot.

Because of that, writing #ForYou was such an interesting challenge.

  7. #WriterMagic 6 What is your creative process like?

I usually think about a story until it becomes concrete in my head and I have a good idea about the plot, the theme, the main characters and the ending as a destination. Then, I usually just start writing chronologically with each chapter going through the same process as the story as a whole in terms of fleshing out the plot for each chapter in depth.

  8. #WriterMagic 13 What are your personal writing ambitions (becoming famous not included, more like self-growth ambition, things you want to get better at)

I'm not one of those, who are satisfied with primarily/only writing for themselves, though I envy them a little. I just need to get my stuff out. When I don't think, I can, I won't write a particular story. That doesn't mean that a huge amount of readers have to read it.

  9. #WriterMagic 10 what kind of character conflicts define your work?

I love internal conflicts! You don't get any more raw than this. And you can't run from them. There can also be interpersonal conflicts, but they are usually related to an internal conflict.
What can make interpersonal conflicts also interesting are society problems, usually systematic ones.

  10. #WriterMagic 7 How do you name your characters?

I try to avoid naming characters after people I know. Of course, the more people you know, this is getting a little complicated. I also try not to rename characters once their names have been written down. In the rare occasions, I did this ended up with one previous name being left in one chapter and people asking "Who is Max?" I usually just go with my gut when it comes to names. I can't explain, why Chase is a Chase.

  11. CW: WriterMagic 7: How do you name your characters? pt 2

I remember looking up Lucine's name in behind the name, looking up names that were related to the moon. Seemed only appropriate for a witch-themed book. Her surname is Seaver, which I love for its ominous vibes, adjacent to sever, weaver, meaning "sea journeyer", to counterpoint Ash's flame themed name. Lucine also gets shortened to "Luce", which evokes our good friend the morning star for all the right reasons.

Ash I think got named Ash basically instantaneously. Firey, destructive, burnt out, gender neutral (lmao). Everyone assumes her full name is Ashley but it's actually a short version of her surname Ashton, which she also goes by. Her actual first name is Diane, again to match with the witch theme, and also as a name that's not meant to suit her.

And of course because I'm trans af there's all sorts of fuckery/symbolism when each of them get called Ash/Ashton/Diane, Lucine/Luce/Seaver

  12. CW: WriterMagic 7: How do you name your characters?

I'm 95% sure neither Erika nor Sebastian were supposed to be called Erika or Sebastian in their original conception. For Erika I found my original short story about a murderous empath/spy named Elise, and I'm pretty sure Sebastian was supposed to be called Silas, but this one I have no real proof for. But I'm very pleased with their new names. Erika is much more evocative of the person behind her name, and maybe the name also gave her more of the "rough edges" evoked by the new consonants. Looking up the etymology, "one ruler, eternal" is very fitting, much more so than Elise's. Same for Sebastian's "revered, feared; the name of the orphan(?) children of Sebaste" vs Silas's "forest". Though I suppose the other etymologies aren't too bad, in retrospect.

Also there's a bit where they need fake names, so I couldn't pass up an opportunity to use their "original" names :P

  13. CW: WriterMagic: Favorite character dynamic

I love me a relationship that defies labeling -- more than friends, less than lovers, with a dash of antagonism.

Also, I definitely have, uh, a tendency to write around two particular characters. Some things change from story to story, other things don't. So that dynamic in all its particularities.

  14. @swanchime Thematically, I kind of have a thesis about "you don't need to perfectly understand someone to love/appreciate/connect with them", or even that that sort of deep inside-your-head empathy can be in its own way shallow or destructive. So choosing to not tell my story that way fits along that theme. But also I'll admit it's kind of a retrofitting to my stubbornness about writing in the (b) way (which I feel is most fashionable at the moment)

Also there's your answer to #WriterMagic 5 too!

  15. CW: #WriterMagic 1. What works of media are your greatest inspirations?

For some reason I'm really struggling with this. A lot of anime, but none of it really in specific? When I was younger I'd write shitty clones of whatever I was watching at the time (naruto, FMA, trinity blood), but these days I have no idea. #EmpathAndAugur is from a dream (and also SCP), #witchpunk was kind of a de-novo high concept thing, my short stories kind of the same. I don't understand my imagination lol.

  16. #writermagic 1. Greatest inspos

Retro final fantasy games (particularly 6, 9, and 10), yume nikki, witch's heart, 999, presentable liberty, dreaming mary, chrono trigger, siinamota

There's more specific ones, but I think we'd be here all day

I think things I tend to be drawn towards are ones with surreal environments, or involve time travel or themes of isolation. Though I wouldn't say my insps all fall into that category, nor do I necessarily think they're the best of the best, but they don't have to be :)

RPG Maker games and FF games have instilled a sense of "i want to make games" in me since i was really young
