I remember looking up Lucine's name in behind the name, looking up names that were related to the moon. Seemed only appropriate for a witch-themed book. Her surname is Seaver, which I love for its ominous vibes, adjacent to sever, weaver, meaning "sea journeyer", to counterpoint Ash's flame themed name. Lucine also gets shortened to "Luce", which evokes our good friend the morning star for all the right reasons.

Ash I think got named Ash basically instantaneously. Firey, destructive, burnt out, gender neutral (lmao). Everyone assumes her full name is Ashley but it's actually a short version of her surname Ashton, which she also goes by. Her actual first name is Diane, again to match with the witch theme, and also as a name that's not meant to suit her.

And of course because I'm trans af there's all sorts of fuckery/symbolism when each of them get called Ash/Ashton/Diane, Lucine/Luce/Seaver

I'm 95% sure neither Erika nor Sebastian were supposed to be called Erika or Sebastian in their original conception. For Erika I found my original short story about a murderous empath/spy named Elise, and I'm pretty sure Sebastian was supposed to be called Silas, but this one I have no real proof for. But I'm very pleased with their new names. Erika is much more evocative of the person behind her name, and maybe the name also gave her more of the "rough edges" evoked by the new consonants. Looking up the etymology, "one ruler, eternal" is very fitting, much more so than Elise's. Same for Sebastian's "revered, feared; the name of the orphan(?) children of Sebaste" vs Silas's "forest". Though I suppose the other etymologies aren't too bad, in retrospect.

Also there's a bit where they need fake names, so I couldn't pass up an opportunity to use their "original" names :P
