  1. So the new German ministry for research is called the Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie, und Raumfahrt, or BMFTR, and thinks of itself as the BMFuTuRe. #WIConf2025

I wonder if anyone involved has read Kim Stanley Robinson.

  2. Insightful closing panel at #WIConf2025 with Maria Exner (Publix), Kathy Meßmer‬ (@BNetzA) and Beatriz Saab (‬ISD) discussing perspectives from administration, activism and journalism about what we need for democratic resilience in a shrinking civic space. Evidence based research and journalism are important control mechanisms and it‘s crucial to keep an open dialogue between regulators, academia, civil society and marginalized communities. And all of those need resources.

  3. We must be getting to the end of the #WIConf2025, because the audience questions are getting _wild_:

“Could we treat affective polarisation like carbon pollution, and tax social media companies for the extent they contribute to it ?”

    I have … thoughts … on this. 🫤

  4. That last #WIConf2025 session also included my presentation of our continuing work at the @qutdmrc on the practice mapping approach, outlining steps towards making this diachronic and dynamic. Here are the slides:

  5. We’re already in the closing panel of the @Weizenbaum_Institut #WIConf2025 conference in Berlin, so here’s a last round of liveblogging from the conference.

  6. Returning from second visit as @Weizenbaum_Institut Fellow.

What a privilege to spend time with Jakob Ohme’s group and the inspiring and friendly WI community (including the Berlin ‘staffel run’) 🏃🏼‍♀️ 🇩🇪

Honoured to deliver the Weizenbaum conference #WIConf2025 keynote 🎙️

    #AI #democracy #photography

  7. Axel Bruns @snurb talks at #WIConf2025 about #SocialMedia Practice Mapping in #ClimateChange debates in Australia, from climate policy advocates to local fire departments.

  8. How or why does #political content spread on #TikTok? Is there a large supply by political actors, is there a high demand by users for political content or is that content preferred by the platform algorithms? Weizenbaum researcher Felix Gaisbauer takes the issue apart at #WIConf2025

  9. Nice session to start day two of the @Weizenbaum_Institut #WIConf2025 conference in Berlin – great to see more details on the large Danish YouTube data donation study, in particular. Liveblog here:

  10. Platforms need to be researched on the risks they pose to society, like our civic discourse or our mental health. But the relationships between researchers, platforms and regulators are complicated. @lkseiling presenting their work with @dscheykopp and @ulrikeklinger on the #DSA at #WIConf2025

  11. #WIConf2025 day 2: In his talk, sociologist Valentin Ihßen suggests to understand #data not as the opposite of #culture, but as deeply intertwined with it - and to explore the meaning-making practices surrounding data.

  12. We are very much looking forward to the closing address by Dr. Silke Launert, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space, on the second day of the #WIConf2025.

  13. Man, I could have gone to that conference instead of #WIConf2025 this week. I wonder what’s new in winding wire in Europe these days.

(Bet their presentations have good twists. Might have put a spring in my step. Twirling, twirling into the future. Etc.)

  14. Aaaand that’s the final #WIConf2025 session for today blogged. More tomorrow, including my own presentation !

  15. What does it look like to build a fact-checking community? It means offering people the space to engage in public discourse and reflect on their work. In our #WIConf2025 session on participation and co-production Caroline Lindekamp and Anna Süß talk about their experiences in the @correctiv.org Faktenforum.

  16. The landlord gains both ways; by the increase of the produce, and by the diminution of the labour which must be maintained out of it.

Chapter XI | Adam Smith Works
    adamsmithworks.org/documents/c

Freedom for Adam Smith is freedom of landlords. Today the platforms have taken their role.

No talk on that at #wiconf2025 ?

  17. There is little research on #microtargeting ads so far. Mona Krewel & Jeanelle Frontin researched their impact in U.S. presidential #elections with the Meta Ad Data Set. They show that surprisingly not gender, age or location are used for targeting, but a persons interests instead. #WIConf2025

  18. From connective faction (sic !) to search query choices, a very diverse but interesting session at the #WIConf2025 – liveblog here:

  19. Can digital technologies support emancipatory struggles for decolonial societal alternatives, when at the same time, ICT are integral to the crises they are trying to address? @Rainer_Rehak and Dorian Cavé discuss examples of community networks and commons-based peer production at the #WIConf2025 session on power imbalances and contestation.

  20. Online spaces seem to empower some people more than others - through communicative acts that create digital surrogate networks. @QrdKnpfr highlights this in his talk at #WIConf2025 with an example on how „critical race theory“ narratives get adapted by right-wing media sites, elite media sites and republican politicians.

about engagement of users on the topic of climate change

    👍

  22. An all male panel talking about #AI discrimination.

    Priceless. #wiconf2025

  23. Very interesting talk by @BenCrum from @vuamsterdam
    at @Weizenbaum_Institut panel on #Governance & #Regulation 👏

🇪🇺 'Politicising Digital Policy in the #EU '

His study found that press coverage on regulating #DSA & #DMA is rather issue-oriented rather than choice-oriented.

Also the focus on the European Commission depolicizes the coverage, Ben Crum argues.

Research on the watered down #AIAct will follow.

    #WIConf25 #wiconf2025

  24. In his contribution to #WIConf2025, legal scholar @Frederik_Borgesius (@Radboud_uni) analyzes insurance practices with a focus on #discrimination and #AI, asking: What is fair - and what do people consider fair?

  25. In this #WIConf2025 session on GenAI and Algorithmic Impact, Yasmin Kafai and @metaxa talk about computational empowerment and break down #AI #auditing into simple steps for end users. Contributions by @luismn.

  26. Some more liveblogging from the Weizenbaum Conference, with a nicely diverse set up papers… #WIConf2025
