#Whiterot are some #fungi of #Agaricomycetes that degrade cellulose, hemicellulose, and #lignin. Since lignin is often degraded first, the affected plant parts appear #whitish. I. Jofré-Fernández et al. (2023) found that white rot affects #reactive #oxygenspecies (#ROS), thus promoting #CO2 #efflux from #soils, which can be a climate-relevant factor.

@DavidPB I grew shallots last year that were completely destroyed by white rot. Next to them I have a row of perennial bunching onions (don’t know what type) that, touch wood, are completely fine. This year most of my garlic was ok but most rows had one single bulb covered in white rot. No pattern at all #WhiteRot

Elephant garlic is up! Some of them had lost their outer skin, but that was the only indication they were bothered by white rot. That’s my garlic season over. Forwards to next season! #garlic #harvest #allotment #WhiteRot

Round two of the garlic harvest. This is messidrome. Only one bulb had visible white rot, so I’m taking it as a win. That’s all my hard necks up now. Lots of soft necks to go. #garlic #WhiteRot #allotment #harvest

First garlic is up! Variety is Rose Wight and the crop has clearly been affected by white rot but only one bulb was unusable. I’m planning to plant the best garlic back out in a (possibly vain) attempt to select for white rot resistance. #allotment #garlic #WhiteRot #harvest
