A review of "Do You Know Your Place", a BBC2 teatime show from before the clocks changed.
Paul from The Traitors visits tourist attractions and slices of life, and they make a thin quiz around it.
Watch it for the tourist bits, and the slices of life; i think of it as "Holiday '71" with questions.

An "in brief" edition of the Week.
Counterpoint, Radio 4's music quiz, is at an inflection point: new producer, perhaps a new host soon, same format.
Gladiators had the inevitable Injury Series, and while it was good, it wasn't as great as i remember last year's.
And which team is best-placed to win University Challenge?

Reviewing "Handcuffed" with Jonathan Ross.
A fascinating show, showing how it's mostly superficial things that divide people, and how a little tolerance and patience can be helpful.
Told its story in a brilliant way, not fully chronological, but logical and enhancing the tale.

A few words on "The Summit", ITV's latest attempt to combine amateur mountaineering with social disagreements and a cheap Interceptor knock-off.
There's almost a morality lesson here, but nobody's going to have seen it, because the show was really not very good.

"The Floor" from ITV. Rob Brydon asks people to Name That Thing. The best at naming That Thing gets territory on a game floor.
There's plenty of tactics, and incentives to stay and play, and a lot of quiz to entertain everyone.
And there are tweaks and twists within the format they've not used this year, perhaps saving it for a second series when the audience is more ready for it.

A look at "Secret Genius" on Channel 4, the show that appeared to be about puzzles and the way the brain works, but was actually about how society consistently cannot cope with people who think in an unusual way.
Fediverse, you'll love it! And it's got Susie Dent! (And it's got Alan Carr, but he's kept on a reasonable leash.)

Just about to happen: me, talking about Weaver's Week on stream.
-
The Week at 25, marking a quarter-century of my little game show column.
In this edition, eleven of my favourite pieces, and how they contribte to the ongoing history of the genre.
-
A look back at The Traitors, which went out last month on BBC1.
How did the winning player(s) land their victory.
When one asks for "hard mode", does one intend garnet, topaz, or diamond?
What help did they get from the other side, and indeed from the other side?
Was there too much show to fit into the time available?
And can we come up with new twists and better tie-breaks?
-
It was the final of Only Connect this week, and the Week has a look back at the series.
Plus a look back at Brainbox Challenge, an unsuccessful one-series wonder from 2008 that BBC2 have been repeating.

"Millionaire Hot Seat" gets the Week's review. A functional show, familiar enough not to need much introduction. Sometimes a little bit rushed, and we never really get to root *for* a contestant.
Plus a tribute to UKGS's greatest writer, news from Quizzy Mondays, and where we'll be in august.
-
"Time Is Money" in this week's Week. The ITV quiz show asks players to stop their timers before the money runs out, best performer can try to keep what they've saved.
Sara Davies hosts with just enough chat, it's functional and fast without being flashy. Worth a look.
Plus! One-shot tennis, Chase round the world, and why my history teacher was right.

Christmas's game shows: the good, the bad, the indifferent.
The moments that made me go woo (hello, Fury)
And zzz (Christmas evening Weakest Link)
And had people on the train looking at me very strangely (That's Puzzling)
-
In a change to the Week I expected to write, it's a visit to Ivo Graham's House of Cats. A lot like Richard Osman's place, except the contestants are smaller and furrier and cuter.
Also a tribute to Biddy Baxter, one of the longest-serving and most influential television producers, because she had a vision and was given time and space and freedom to make it happen.
-
Jet Lag The Game gets a review in the Week.
Schengen Showdown saw two pairs (including the lovely Tom Scott) travel from here to there to everywhere.
Who will find the mimosa? Where is the Vatican City? What is a Djungleskog? Why is Deutsche Bahn so rubbish?
I enjoyed Jet Lag: there are a few iffy bits, but the show has heart and drive and is well worth a watch.

A trip back to 2022 and the Dutch series «De Alleskunner». It came to our shores as «99 to Beat», though our version concentrated more on the people than the tasks.
What tasks were played? What worked well, and what could we have seen more of?
Plus some spectacularly subtle jokes.

The Week nominates some "Listed game shows".
Which game shows are the most important, and should not be changed, and tell us something about how the genre evolved?
An idea pilfered from Edith Bowman and Robbie Collin when they sat in on Wittertainment a few years back.
http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Weaver%27s_Week_2025-07-20
Thanks to @chrisd for the lead.

Celebrity Puzzling on Channel 5.
A revival of the cleverclogs quick thinking show from a couple of years ago, now retooled as a celebrity programme.
It's an entertaining enough programme, nothing to set the world on fire, plenty to entertain if you're watching.
Plus! the Countdown final, and notes on Martin Österdahl leaving the Eurovisions.

It's not Sunday, but the Week is up already.
Concluding my look at 99 to Beat. What stories did they tell, why was the winner 29% lucky, and does the "winner's edit" exist?
Really enjoyed this show, there was something for everyone.
-
This week's Week is a look back at 99 to Beat, the show for the one who can do everything.
Knowing the results, I can ask difficult questions. Did the producers edit it to show the champion from early on? How much time was given to players as they left? And what about the people who were eliminated without speaking on telly, what do they say, eh?
This piece ran *much* longer than planned, so I'll finish it next week.
-
The Week looks at Silence is Golden: what happens if you hear a comedian, and bribe the audience not to laugh? Richard Bacon's idea is strange, and the experiment seems not to have made good telly.
Plus! One series wonders: they came, they made an impression, they never got recommissioned.
-
An awful lot of words have been spoken about the televote at this year's Eurovision Song Contest.
Being slightly contrarian, and somewhat optimistic, I choose to remember a lot of other things.
The performers! The drum break! The puffer jackets! The dance hit! The chandelier! The winner!!

Plus! Thoughts on the Mastermind final, and why this week's Genius Game is a very good introduction to the show.

Think I'm ready for Eurovision.
- 21 chai-and-lemon cookies baked and cooling
- 11 herb-and-mustard muffins baked and cooling
- One edition of the Week published, looking also at the University Challenge final, and this week's Genius Game.http://www.ukgameshows.com/ukgs/Weaver%27s_Week_2025-05-18
And plenty of time for a nap this afternoon.

This Week, I'm looking back at BBC2's Chess Masters.
Was this a chess show played by humans; or a human interest show using chess as a metaphor? Because the programme fell between stools and made depressingly little sense.
Plus! Some words about Genius Game, the ITV show you would enjoy.
Look, you're on Mastodon, and Genius Game is the most Mastodon show since Only Connect. And it's got David Tennant!

A look at the recent series of Gladiators, which is inching its way from "Very good" to "Excellent", but isn't quite there yet.
And a few words on Sally Lindsay's 70s Quiz Night, which is The Big Fat Quiz of the Year for people who don't like new comedians like Jimmy Carr.
-
A short set of radio reviews in today's Week.
Counterpoint, the properly tough Radio 4 quiz that's everything Popmaster aspires to be.
Sound Mate and Hot Takes, two comedy panel pilots from Radio Ulster. Something of merit in both, more in one than the other.
Plus the BAFTA nominations for game shows.

Always first to the new formats, this week I take another look at "Beat the Pack", a one-series daytime quiz first shown in 2013.
A quiz where the winning move can be not to play. And the one daytime show hosted by Jake Humphrey before he became Mister Sport.
Has "Beat the Pack" influenced the development of the quiz genre? Or was it a wrong turn with lessons we've learned?
And a few quick words on ITV's changed "Jeopardy!".
