Some of the oldest #UT99 screenshots that I could find on my drive. Must have been late 2000.
Apparently, some 40 FPS was good enough back then to have fun. So much so that I didn’t even bother to reduce texture detail or lower the insanely high resolution of 1024x768? “Nah, this is fine, let’s go.”

If you have ~4 hours to spare, here’s Elliot Cannon, the maker of maps like Deck16, talking UT99:

Only problem is, there are hardly any UT99 FFA servers left – let alone servers that use vanilla settings. No mods, standard maps (and not just Deck16), more than just Deathmatch, that’s what I’d like to see.

Since I’m playing #UT99 FFA again every now and then, I made a little CLI server “browser”, so I don’t have to launch the full game.
$ lsut 127.0.0.1:7778 185.242.112.2:6678
--[ Another UT Server (1/16): DM-Deck16][ ]--
: 3 cathy
--[ DECK16][ ALL WEAPONS [DE][by PlayUnreal.eu/discord] (2/12): DM-Deck16][ ]--
: 39 quacho
: 34 Stealthhttps://movq.de/git/lsut/file/README.html
(Actually just an excuse to write a tiny little bit of Rust again. Still a total noob at this, because I don’t use it nearly enough.)

This brought back so many memories. #Quake3 and #UT99 were a huge part of my life back then, genuinely good times.
Now #gameplay footage from #Quake4: The Awakening has surfaced on #YouTube, an expansion that was cancelled after only ten months of development. The footage shows early environments, experimental mechanics and content that was clearly never finished.
Mostly documentary value, but still a fascinating look at what could have been.
Apparently some elements like the Dead Zone #multiplayer mode actually made it into the 1.3 update back then.Bittersweet to watch.

Been playing UT FFA almost daily lately. 🤔
Works really well on Linux, assuming the server lets me join (some anticheat stuff requires Windows) and assuming I restart the game every now and then: There’s a memory leak somewhere and at some point it just crawls to a halt.
Deck16, of course. Probably the most-played map in history. 🤪 (It is great, though, isn’t it?)

Games like #UT99 are almost like a dance: Two players knowing the map intimately, jumping across platforms without even looking, planning three shots ahead, predicting each other’s moves. Crazy. 🤪

Trying to play some #UT99 FFA every now and then, but all the anti cheat stuff requires Windows. 🙄

Hello, yes, I’d like to alter reality, please.
No, I don’t remember anymore why I have the UT GOTY version and the normal one.
Yes, I skipped UT2k3. (And anything after UT2k4.)

Found these in the archive.
UT99, CTF-Face, October 2002. We were being silly, just spawning barrels and making a huge tower. 🥴
