Getting underway with the "move my #CGHMN server to real hardware" project. The poll I posted a few days ago said y'all wanted me to run OpenBSD 3.0, but I found that it didn't work well with my hardware so I settled for Linux. Although I'm doing something interesting: I'm running #LinuxFromScratch! Specifically LFS 3.3. After solving the performance problems I was having with the VIA C3 CPU, the bottleneck at this point seems to be the CF card I'm using for storage.

I'm considering moving my main #CGHMN server from a QEMU VM to some real vintage hardware. I'm considering two OS options:
* OpenBSD 3.0: current VM OS, has some novelty value, and I own a physical copy
* Slackware 8.1: more practical benefits, easier to find software and docs forWhat do you think, #RetroComputing Fedi? :thonk:

One of the network goals for #CGHMN has been better global availability. We put a server in the US, Europe and Australia. You connect to your closest node and benefit from less latency to local peers and less transit latency from a datacenter backbone versus your ISP's cheap as fuck peering
Except for some reason OVH *will not rent* servers out of their Sydney datacenter to Americans. Only Australians
Why the fuck they'd rather have servers sit powered off not making money is beyond me, but

I have it up on my #CGHMN site if anyone wants to play with it there:
http://www.n8fq.retro/java_metars
It's still getting its data from NCAR's server for now (updated half-hourly with a cronjob) but I'll eventually work on REing it and ingesting from a more permanent source.

My latest frivolous #RetroComputing project: a #Kiwix ZIM reader for vintage web browsers.

Streaming video - 1997 style!

A little explanation: I've been playing around with RealAudio/Video the last few days. Early this morning I got a server up and running, and this was a test to see how well the whole setup would perform with some high (by 90s standards)-bitrate live video. I tuned into @miru 's stream on a modern machine, ran VGA out to a scan converter, and ran that into an analog capture card connected to my WinXP laptop, where I ran RealVideo Encoder 1.0. Then streamed it out over #CGHMN.
It worked great!

My main project over the last day has been getting my retronet connected to #CGHMN. It's been a major learning experience; I've never really dealt with networking on this level before. I've learned more about routing and DNS in the last 24 hours than I have in a quarter century of homelabbing and webmastering.
-
Looks like at least the original versions of the protocol are unlikely to work on the modern net, since they require the player to accept an inbound connection from the server.
Might be something to play with on #CGHMN maybe? :thonk:

I need a proper name for my #isp2go project. Right now, isp2go is just an internal codename. Please drop your fancy name ideas in the comments - I’m happy about every suggestion. Later, I’ll run a poll with the most-favourited ones.
:blobfoxhappymlem: Boosts appreciated!
TL;DR: It’s a portable ISP in a 19" rack on wheels, e.g. for nerdy events. It still needs a real ISP for upstream, but it’s made for quick infrastructure setup and a bit of retroness (having your own DSL network is kinda cool, right?).
It includes a DSLAM (DSL broadband with your favourite modem), a PBX for local analog and VoIP telephony, a 48-port 10G switch, and a server. The server handles the firewall (PPPoE server, #cghmn VPN, routing stuff), hosting some on-site HTTP services like a customer dashboard (as you probably know from your own real ISP), and more.
A 56k dial-up service is also planned! (ISDN too, if I can get the provider side compact enough.)

More than a few folks have asked me where the Discord for the #CGHMN retro network is (particularly since we've been tinkering with the network behind the scenes a lot. Oops)
Same place it's always been: On my masto profile!
