How big is the instance you're on, in terms of number of users?

#Threads #UserCount falls to new lows, highlighting retention challenges
"Threads’ #DailyActiveUser count is down 82% from launch as of July 31, according to Sensor Tower, with just eight million users accessing the app each day.
[...]
Threads’ user count peaked at roughly 49 million on July 7, the day after launch, and fell steadily to just over 11 million by July 29, said David Carr from Similarweb."Still more than #Mastodon 😉

Anyone know what's going on with @mastodonusercount ? There must have been a change in the reporting mechanism, right?
I was wondering why it had gone into the thousands recently. Maybe that was an error?

« Vérification de la réalité... La mise à l'échelle est difficile.
Cette semaine encore, Mastodon a ajouté plus de 200 000 utilisateurs et compte désormais plus de 11,5 millions de comptes sur des milliers d'instances. Nous continuons à rouler à plus de 1000 nouveaux comptes par heure.»

Reality check... Scaling is hard.
Just this week Mastodon added over 200,000 users, and now has over 11.5 million accounts on thousands of instances. We continue to roll along at more than 1000 new accounts per hour. The new hot topic "distributed Twitter alternative" has about 50,000 users on its one and only instance. Not saying they can't achieve scale, but they are not even close yet.

There's scepticism about #Mastondon's global #usercount hitting 10m.
I think it's not an over-estimate, but it's just the total N of accounts across all active instances, not active users.
I've been scraping the active user count. I get figures between about 1.4m-1.2m, on the basis of what I think is a good strategy to list all active instances (I must blog that).
Tonight I used the same codebase to count total users and I arrived at the figure of 11,070,379 across almost 16k instances.

The drop in Monthly Active Users seems to have levelled off around 1.5 Million. It was 1.7 a couple weeks ago but has bounced around 1.5 the last many days.

@mastodonusercount is there anything like this but for posts. I'd love to see how many posts are made and how many active posters there are.

Unless a) my maths is way off or b) something abnormal happens I am thinking the Mastodon count will pass 9 million user accounts before New Year. It was only a few weeks ago it went past 8 million.

@mastodonusercount How do you count the user accounts? Is the code for it open source somewhere?

Regardless of the UI (I could not see it because of my zoom level), the mastodon v2 api only reports the active monthly users.
Most instances still serve the v1 api that shows the total user counteg:

@VictorVenema You are right. The growth of the Fediverse does not outweigh the number of users becoming inactive/dormant. Thus, the number of active users is stagnant and even decreases:
Change of "active 6 months" in the last year:
#Fediverse: 1.36Mio -> 1.21Mio
#Mastodon: 1.25Mio -> 1.09Mio
#diaspora: 87250 -> 69018
#Pixelfed: 9647 -> 12563In other words, the #Fediverse needs to substantially grow faster in order to also grow in terms of actually active users.
