Had an interesting "onboarding interview" for a #translation project today. Not sure yet if we're a good fit, but the discussion crystallized my thoughts on a little functional disconnect in what many companies do to evaluate language service providers.
The subject of "test translations" has been argued over for all of the 20+ years I have been involved in commercial translation work, and I have no intention to add to that debate today. However....
Project managers, "vendor managers", etc. if you are trying to evaluate someone's suitability to work with your company on some project, perhaps instead of simply sending out some text in whatever format as a test translation, you should structure the test in a way that actually reflects your processes.
For example, if your company uses #Trados Studio and you expect prospective team members to translate packages from that tool, then for God's sake, don't just send out the text for the "test" as a PDF, DOCX or whatever. Send a damned package. And if you don't get an SDLRPX back for the SDLPPX you sent, well, you know that there may be other issues ahead. And doing things this way can also save you time and allow you to apply some automated QA as well.
Ditto for any other tool, be it #Phrase, #Wordfast, #memoQ or whatever floats your boat. Do the "test" as a small assignment on your server, send out a package for your favored tool, etc. Too many times I have seen friends and corporate clients get burned by vetting processes that are really not fit for purpose. Don't join that club.

Oh, FYI y'all, I was chatting with Stanislav Okhvat (of #TransTools) earlier today, and it seems he's got a tool for use in MS Word that will allow multiple searches using (a) just ordinary text search & replace, (b) Word wildcards and (c) honest-to-God .NET regex like I use to build most of my work libraries. And it looks like these can be managed easy for use by those who aren't particularly technogeeky.I just got a license for testing, and if I like what I see (as I usually do with his work), I'll include it in my workshops next month. I have several client scenarios where the editors are totally CAT-phobic and want to work only in MS Word, and this looks like a great tool to help them clean up some of the formatting trashed by MT or careless human translators.
And in case anyone is wondering, the results can be brought back into the translation management system in #memoQ or #Trados Studio using that monolingual review that Susan Starling and I dreamed up over a decade ago....

The last of my three public talks on the #memoQ #Regex Assistant will be next Thursday, February 2nd, at 12pm Central European Time.
This series has focused on how ordinary, intelligent #translators and reviewers can use the power of #RegularExpressions to solve problems in #translation and #localization without getting bogged down in ugly, non-intuitive syntax.
Attendees are given a useful library of expressions to aid their work, which are organized with understandable names, labels and descriptions - all you need to find and apply them. Most of these expressions should be usable in other tools like #Trados Studio or #Xbench.
