#TootCat Mission Control -- we are, uh, working on the "503" SSL error thingy, and will advise. :tootcat:

Based the information in this post, at least 2 user requests, and the known unpopularity of any tool which scrapes fedi timelines to make posts more publicly searchable without consent, I have fediblocked zeitgeist.blue from #TootCat. :tootcat:
(All TC admin decisions are subject to revision if there seems to be a consensus towards that among TC users, either at the time or later; feel free to weigh in with your position, either for or against. ^.^)

I almost forgot -- today is #TootCat's 9th birthday! 🎈 🎂 🍕 :tootcat: 🎉

:tootcat: To answer a question from a report this morning: we instaban any accounts that are just straight-up commercial advertising. I even added this as a "server rule" last month or so, but they don't seem to have noticed.
To be clear: self-promotion is fine, selling stuff via fedi is fine, and even officially representing an organization or company, under its name rather than the name of the human running the account, is fine -- as long as the account's purpose is positive engagement and not just ad copypasta.
There's a lot of theoretical grey area between those two, but fortunately not a lot of actual examples -- adbots almost always do certain things and are very easy to spot.

Okay, yes, we're back again. :tootcat:
I'm making some progress learning my way around the system @meatballhat engineered up for us to ensure that we can deal with future mass exodi from other social media sites, but I'm still getting to the "how to access other boxes besides the maintenance portal" part of the quest. 🔎 💻
The immediate problem has been cleared up, however, and we'll continue to look at what needs to be done to prevent this from happening every couple of days...

Got some new gamering emojis, engineered up by the indefatigable @rnd -- share and enjoy!*

Friends, I feel like maybe #TootCat :tootcat: should (nay, is meowally compelled to) toss a chunk into this:
.meow — Next Round gTLD Application
It sounds excellent. Any reason not to? (...aside from them using #Kickstarter... though at the moment, I can't even remember why Kickstarter has a red flag in my brain.)
(h/t to @FrozenTrout for drawing this to my attention, and to @Harena for drawing to my attention the fact that @FrozenTrout had drawn it to my attention ^.^)

This 1972 SF novel is set in a future in which #TootCat users are among the few survivors of a global calamity created by the "Demons" -- descendants of today's Republicans.
(I first read this as a tiny sometime in the mid-70s, borrowed from the Durham County Library downtown (when it was in this building iirc), only acquiring a copy for myself relatively recently -- which is to say sometime after 1985 or so. [straightface])
Anyway, I'm reading it to @Harena as a bedtime story.

The new UK law discussed here (via) -- which apparently imposes ridiculous ID requirements even on non-UK web sites (how are they even going to enforce that?) -- looks to me like bullshit, and #TootCat will therefore make no efforts to comply with it or any similar law passed in any other jurisdiction (including the US). :tootcat:

I finally had to just upgrade the server that runs MeW (the :tootcat: wiki), among (too) many other things, because it's been getting too hopelessly slow and I'm still not ready to migrate stuff.
It wasn't a big upgrade, but hopefully it will be enough for now.

#TootCat update: You may have noticed that since about 19:48 yesterday evening it became impossible to post and there were no incoming posts.
This was as a result of our latest Posting Quality Initiative (PQI), the brainchild of our CEO F. Laynem Alloff IV. This initiative included an exhaustive study and analysis of usership experience and interaction with the web modality which found that when people are allowed to post, the average quality of the site deteriorates. The "posting" and "receiving posts" features were therefore disabled, to further enhance your TootCat experience.
We hope you have enjoyed this brief glimpse of the technological innovation and service for which TootCat is justly famous, and are looking forward to future PQI updates!
[absolutely straight smiley face]

:tootcat: Technical Alert: The most recent upgrade* here on #TootCat seems to have introduced a bug where some users cannot edit profiles or boost/fave posts. We're hot on the trail 🔥 🔎 (or at least reasonably warm on the trail :lattentacle: 🔎 ; wouldn't want to melt anything).
Please feel free to let me know if you also have or have not experienced this bug, or if the symptoms don't match my description.
* we're running Glitch Edition, but I don't know if the problem was introduced there or in the upstream Mastodon code.
[added] Although that bug is not affecting me (or apparently any of the admin team either), there is also an issue with searching for fedi URLs in order to bring them up within the local instance. These two bugs may or may not be related and may or may not have been introduced in the same time, but they both seem to have appeared since that update 1-2 days ago.

Reminds me of my friend Chris's cat Toby, who was wise and clever and I'm sure he ran the world from his little shelf by the airing cupboard.
Toby had a wonderful retirement, with lots of friends and snuggles and toys.

been meaning to do this for a while, finally got around to it now. may not be the best way to go about it but meh, i'm using it and now i'm sharing it! :blobcat:
only tested here, a glitch-soc instance, and quickly on a standard mastodon instance, apologies!
(if you want to try it on whatever instance, edit or add the instance's url to the userstyle in Stylus etc, there is a decent chance it may work!)
now with optional heart instead, if one's heart desires:
delete or comment the first bit, uncomment the second! :blobcatheart:available on userstyles.world, if you use Stylus!

[UPDATE: question has been answered! Thanks to Nivex, in replies. :tootcat:)
I don't suppose there's anyone out there who understands #IPv6 addresses better than I do and can suggest the proper syntax for blocking all the addresses in this range -- mainly everything beginning with "
2405:201:5c01:6nnn", though I don't know if that would cast too wide of a net... -
I guess this is as ready for prime-time as it's ever going to be: my position on Meta Threads :tootcat: #TootCat

P.S. apparently the upgrade changed something so now when I type
@newsI only get eponymous accounts on other instances... >.<
