The Tell-Tale Heart Day (1)
I love Poe in general, and actually, The Cask of Amontillado is my favorite story, but this one is my fave to read aloud and teach.
I always start by showing THIS CLIP from The Simpsons without any context for the kids, just to see their reactions. Then we read the story and talk about the narrator. I go back and show that clip again for the kids who didn’t get it; as we read now, they do. We’re going to do a Because, But, So activity. We’ll start with the sentence stem: The narrator cannot be fully trusted. I’m going to have students write each sentence on a separate index card. They’ll leave their Because sentence on their desk and gallery walk to find a good match for their but and so sentences.
Then we always watch The Tell-Tale Clock. That should fill out the hour. Tomorrow we’ll talk about mood. Monday, they have an escape room based on the story that is always fun. I bought it here on TPT and can’t recommend it enough. I make necklaces from Mardi Gras beads and eyeballs I buy at Dollar Tree that I gray out as a prize for the winning teams. Last year I also bought the eyeball rings and gave those to all the kids.
