Jinshi sat looking at the paperwork in front of him.

Grain to replace a border garrison stores damaged by water: Denied. The commander could pay for that and be more careful with the stores in the future.
Timber for one of Sun Prince’s palaces: Jinshi started to approve it, then noticed who the forwarding clerk was.
“Got him for fraud,” he said to himself.
“Have this man seized,” he ordered a guard.
- A request for medical supplies from Dr. You. The usual items: cloth for bandages; common herbs; alcohol; realgar…
He stopped, his pen poised to sign. “Realgar, a poison,” he thought.
“Hmm, compiled by Maomao,” he muttered.
His eyes misted with affection. Then an image of the self-inflicted scars on her arm arose.
“I’m sure it’s for a good use, but just in case,” he said, and struck out the arsenic poison before approving the requisition.

A 20 year friendship between Frederick Douglass & German born feminist, freethinker, + abolitionist Ottilie Assing was to end in tragedy. After learning that Douglass had married Helen Pitts, Assing killed herself by swallowing cyanide in a public park in Paris. As per her will all her letters with Douglass were burned. She bequeathed him ongoing income from a trust fund + his choice of books from her library.

Frederick Douglass & Helen Pitts married 2 years after the death of his 1st wife Anna. He was 66 + she, 46. They married amid a storm of controversy. Both families objected to the marriage. Douglass’ children felt his marriage was a repudiation of their African American mother. Pitts' family, alrhough friends to Douglass + abolitionists, stopped speaking to her. The couple remained married for 11 years, until his death in 1895.
