Elon Musk returned to the stand for a third time on Thursday as the OpenAI trial entered its fourth day, facing heated cross‑examination by OpenAI’s lawyer William Savitt. Musk reiterated that he lost trust in Sam Altman by late 2022, citing Microsoft’s $10 billion investment in 2023 as the tipping point that convinced him the company’s for‑profit arm had overtaken its original nonprofit mission, effectively “stealing the charity” he helped seed with $38 million. He argued that a small for‑profit subsidiary could support the nonprofit, but it should not become the “main event.” After Musk’s testimony, his attorneys are expected to call Jared Birchall, the manager of Musk’s family office, and possibly Greg Brockman and Stanford professor Stuart Russell as additional witnesses. The case is overseen by Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in federal court in Oakland, California.

  2. AI Expert STUART RUSSELL, exposes the trillion-dollar #AI race, why governments won’t regulate, how #AGI could replace humans by 2030, and why only a nuclear-level AI catastrophe will wake us up.
He explains what the “gorilla problem” reveals about our #future under superintelligent AI, how governments are outfunded by #bigtech, why current AI systems already lie and self-preserve and the radical solution he’s spent a decade building to make AI safe.

To get some answers, I invited #StuartRussell onto The Gray Area. Russell is a professor of computer science at UC Berkeley and the author of Human Compatible: Artificial Intelligence and the Problem of Control. He was one of the signatories of an open letter in March calling for a six-month pause on AI training. We discuss the risks and potential benefits of AI and whether he believes we can build AI systems that align with our values and interests.

  4. Having read (and mostly enjoyed) books by Max Tegmark, Stuart Russell, Ray Kurzweil, Brian Christian, Ajay Agrawal and Nick Bostrom in recent months, its been Melanie Mitchell (AI: a guide for thinking humans), D'Iganzio & Klein (Data Feminism) and Erica Thompson (Escape from Model Land) that I think have provided some of the most balanced and insightful perspectives on AI and data science.

  5. Artificial intelligence (AI)
AI has much to offer humanity. It could also wreak terrible harm. It must be controlled

#StuartRussell's signature on 'that letter', certainly made me take it more seriously.

    This is a considered piece.

  6. Whatever you may think of #ElonMusk, I wouldn't call #StuartRussell alarmist. This call for a 6 months moratorium on #LLM #AI development deserves attention. futureoflife.org/open-letter/p

  7. Have recently read 'Power & Prediction' by Agrawal, Gans & Goldfarb, and re-read 'Life 3.0' by Max Tegmark and 'Human Compatible' by Stuart Russell.

Anyone have other recommendations in these areas?
