I wish there was an alternative to YouTube. I've successfully stayed off it for about a month now, I think, but if I want to share music there doesn't seem to be any alternative.
Stan Ridgway is an American treasure. You might have heard his song "Mexican Radio" when he was the lead singer of Wall of Voodoo. I'm pretty sure his solo albums haven't gotten anywhere near as much attention, but they're really outstanding. A lot of his work is more like story songs rather than just songs. Here's "Harry Truman" from Stan's "Partyball" album.
And what he says about John Wayne is really true!

Just Stan, some jungle foliage, and the tailor's dummy playing the object of the song.
Moody blue-and-green lighting add to the spookiness of the ballad.

#WallOfVoodoo cultivated an air of mystery - their album covers, their very name! - and the subject matter of their songs, #StanRidgway's arch vocals, the music itself were always a little offbeat and angular in a way that made it easy for them to ride the #NewWave to us, via #EnnioMorricone #SpaghettiWestern.
This album was their commercial peak. I was going to feature a track you're less likely to have heard, but in the end had to go with "Mexican Radio." How could I resist the couplet “I wish I was in Tijuana/Eating barbecued iguana”?
Another favorite of mine is their oddly compelling cover of "Ring of Fire" from their debut eponymous ep. You may have also heard frontman and artistic lead Ridgway on "Don't Box Me In" from #StewartCopeland's soundtrack for the film adaptation of #SEHinton's Rumblefish, and he continues to release solo music via #bandcamp.

You might as well call this album Stan Ridgway tells 9 stories.
Camouflage is the #NewWave Hurricane.

Listening to my #Vinyl #Collection - Album 193
#StanRidgway – Mosquitos (1989)
I'm a huge wall of voodoo fan, and by extension a fan of Stan Ridgway.
This album is slower than I'd like. I miss the frantic energy - I miss the punk influences.
It's not bad, it's simply less than I'd hoped.
