A new wave of spam attacks has hit Mastodon. Previously, unwanted messages could be dealt with using content filters, but now the situation is much more complicated: spam posts now contain only images without text, making them difficult to filter. If an effective solution is not found, we risk soon being overwhelmed by a flood of spam in the fediverse.

This latest wave of spam here on Mastodon is seriously getting to be very frustrating to say the least.

I woke up and took a look at Mastodon about 45 minutes ago and I had to start my day by reporting 19 spam posts.

It's the same spam that's been going around for a week or so now that mass mentions people.

This latest wave of spam here on Mastodon has been pretty bad over the last 2 - 3 days.

I think I've personally reported close to 50 accounts so far and I'm still getting them as we speak.

There seems to be a spam attack on the Fediverse at the moment.

If you get spammed, report it by clicking ⋯ on the spam post and "Report..." so that your admin can take action.

⚠️ If you are an admin of a public server, you might want to switch on moderation for sign-ups right now. The spammers are apparently on servers where the admins have unmoderated sign-ups.

Muting posts containing these two domains seems to get rid of all the spam that has been plaguing me for the past few days. Just putting it out there in case it helps anyone in a similar situation.

I have applied a web filter called Caterpillar because there was too much spam coming into my server in the fediverse, making it difficult to operate normally.

Since then, my server has not been under spam attack. :)

In one of the conversations about the great spam attack that happened this weekend, someone mentioned that some sort of rate limiting for new users might help mitigate this sort of thing in future.

I think that's not a bad idea, hey? A brand new user shouldn't be able to post more than, say, 60 times per hour (perhaps exclude Boosts from that, because Boosting is so quick and easy). And that limit gets removed once they've made their 100th legitimate post.

Obviously, some Fediverse server software might implement this while others may not, so it's important that it's implemented at the API level for incoming posts. If the user's home server doesn't enforce the rate limiting, but your server does, then your server shouldn't accept more than 60 incoming requests from that user per hour.

What do you think, @Gargron? Obviously make the limit configurable, but 60 (excluding Boosts) is probably a sensible default, no? 🤔

Based on some dodgy regex queries and the limited reach of my instance, it looks like the number of spam affected servers is trending down but the number of spam posts is still actually trending up.

@admin Hmm, interesting. He joined on January 21st with a reason: ”I want to join the greate community and to chat with other members and to contribute to the community” and I suspended him February 6th because of spam. So he could have not caused further spam from my server because I do not have open registration. But I may be a target because of this.

One component to the #spamattack seems to get people to #blockwholeservers instead of individual accounts on a specific server instance.

Keep that in mind as some large instances have been getting spammed.

So is it really true that the only way for a mod to suspend or limit a domain from the report-view is to copy paste the domain into a different page, the one for federation?

Sheesh.

No whole-instance-action buttons at all on the report screen eh?

Maybe I should learn Ruby.

Got a strange email request from a cousin asking if I could do her a favor. I said yes. "She" replied about having me purchase some Apple gift cards...sounded fishy, so I called her. We don't speak often, but we had a great conversation. She'd been hacked. She's using aol email. Hopefully, we got her fixed up. #spamattack

Looks like mastodon.social is getting hit with another wave of spam bots. Best thing to do is report them and myself and @cliffwade will block them ASAP. @Gargron and crew usually get to them quick so just sit tight and keep reporting them.

I don't think defederating Mastodon Social is a solution to the problem at hand right now. This is all a learning experience. Mute the server until they resolve it. I am quite sure things will move in that direction.
